Beginning Band Supplies and Instruments

Black, 1 inch, 3-Ring Binder

All Music students will need a 1' Binder to keep their music and book in for class. This is a requirement for all Junior High Music Students

Beginning Band Book

The Smithville Junior High Band uses the Time for Band Book as our begining band text book. You can purchase one by contacting the book provider below via email or phone.

The books are offered for all instruments, let them know which instrument your student is playing so they can send the correct book.

Percussion Mallets and Sticks

Congradulations on earning a spot in percussion!

Percussionists learn a lot of different instruments and will need a couple of different sets of sticks in order to play them. We require that Beginning 6th grade students must have at least:

1 Set of Snare Sticks
1 Set of Yarn Mallets
A stick bag to keep sticks in

Bundles of bags and sticks are at the bottom of the page

As the students begin to learn more instruments we may request that a student purchase a set of timpani mallets, but that would not be until 7th or 8th grade.

Quick Find

Snare Sticks

While snare sticks can be cheap and easy to find, not all snare sticks are great for beginners. When a student is first learning how to use a drum stick things like weight, balance, bead diameter all make a big difference. These are the sticks we would like our students to have when first learning how to play.

Vic Firth - SD 1 Generals

These are the most recommended Beginner drum stick and work the best for all around playing.

Pro Mark Concert SD1

Very similar to the Vic Firth and an acceptable stick to purchase if the Vic Firth sticks are unavailable.

Mallets

There is enormous variety in the types of mallets you can purchase. We would like all beginning students to have one set of yarn mallets. Having the Vic Firth is preferable however, we are less picky about what yarn mallets they are using in their first year.

Vic Firth M3

These are the recommended sticks, however a set of standard sticks may be substituted if these are unavailable or out of budget.

Standard Yarn Mallets

These are standarnd medium-soft yarn mallets that are budget friendly and can be orderd quickly if your student breaks their current sticks. (it happens sometimes) Either pair is accetable for 6th grade beginning band.

Stick Bags

Stick management and storage is a big deal, and a little tricky. Percussionsists will be given a cubby or locker to use while in band and the best way to keep their sticks from being taken out of that space or to be taken home easily is with a stick bag. Every Beginner must have a stick bag to keep their sticks safe and organized. There is no prefrence on what stick bag is purchased, just as long as it can hold all the sticks needed for the student.
