Welcome to the 2019 Five College Libraries All Staff Gathering! This is an opportunity for staff across our libraries to socialize, share new information, understand our challenges, and celebrate our collective accomplishments.
The theme of this year’s gathering, Constant Evolution, is intended to broaden the presentations and discussions beyond the high profile projects (which are also welcome topics) and dig deep into the day-to-day operations of libraries. We hope presenters will feel emboldened to share with their colleagues the challenges and successes of managing students, trying out a new approach to teaching, reconfiguring a workflow, adapting to a recent retirement, and everything in between and beyond.

Thea Atwood, Data Services Librarian, UMass; Michelle Paquette, Metadata & Technical Services Archivist, Smith College
Two new, first-time parents discuss how their work-life balance evolved with a baby. Michelle and Thea discuss preparations for leave, balancing the desire to stay on top of fast-changing priorities like FOLIO, keeping on top of professional development, cognitive load, areas where we continue to struggle, and how to navigate dropping the ball, when necessary.
Emma Beck, Access Services Associate; Kim Ammons, Access Services Evening Associate, Mount Holyoke College
We will begin by giving an overview of our research on social media primarily in academic libraries. From there, we intend to look at Mount Holyoke social media through three pillars: how we manage our accounts, how we engage with our students, and how we have improved the accessibility of all of our social media sites.
Sika Berger, User Experience Librarian, Smith College; Kelly Dagan, Research, Instruction, & User Experience Librarian, Amherst College
Have you always wanted to know how students use Discover for books, archival collections and other locally held materials? As part of a collaborative usability testing project, members of the 2018 Five College User Experience committee watched users’ search screens while listening to the students talk about their successes and frustrations. Find out if any themes stretched across the five campuses, and learn about some problems the FCUX and Discovery committees are focused on as we prepare for FOLIO.
Jason Fuller, Five College Library Repository Collection Manager
Brief discussion of Five College Library Repository Collection (FCLRC) and how it supports scholarship on the Five College campuses. Looking at the terminology for Five College Library Repository Collection to better understand what the collection is and how it is used on a regular basis.
Sharon Domier, East Asian Language Librarian, Amherst College, Smith College, UMass Amherst
In 1996 I joined the Five Colleges on a DOE Title VI grant and was told to divide my time at each library according to the 11ths formula. In the years since my time allotments and duties have shifted but not really changed as I continue to figure out how best to serve the faculty, staff, and students that need my expertise.
Carol Will, Coordinator, Learning Commons, UMass
Recently I attended an ACRL Preconference in Cleveland on Systems Leadership with the purpose of understanding how our positions in organizations can impact how we see the work of others in conjunction with our own. Barry Oshry, an expert in organizational systems, has held numerous interactive and experiential workshops that illustrate how people in Top, Middle, and Bottom positions within their organizations can be siloed causing misunderstandings and resentment amongst the organization. Having an opened awareness of our relationships within our organizations can allow for a better understanding of ourselves and others as well as decrease frustration and insecurity on the job while leading to a new sense of empowerment.
Lucinda Williams, Acquisitions Supervisor, Smith College
