What is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that provides valuable information for the provider. Information is gathered and interpreted by the provider then the provider and patient develop a treatment plan that addresses the underlying causes of psychiatric disease states. This may mean gastrointestinal issues or other underlying causes that are known to contribute to and/or cause mental health symptoms are addressed. Functional medicine requires a detailed understanding of each patient’s genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors. The provider may prescribe medications but there is a strong focus on adjuncts such as adding supplemental co-factors, optimizing nutrition and making lifestyle changes as indicated by data collected. The information guides the personalized treatment plan that leads to improved patient outcomes.
