Here in Great Mills High School, we provide theater classes, and Lighthouse Productions, as well as ITS (International Thespian Society). Theater has created a safe space for students to gain their confidence and connect with lots of different people. You are able to enhance your skills in teamwork and social abilities. It gives the students a purpose to work hard through entertainment. It is a part of history that has grown over time.
A student participating in ITS and Clue, Caitlin Coon, has given advice on not wanting to be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone, because you never know what would happen if you never tried. Another student participating in ITS and theater class, Lily Lathem, said the benefits of theater was her public speaking and thinking outside of the box. This other student participates in theater, Emma Carney, was first interested in theater because of her love for singing and acting.
Many students answered the survey and when asked about what were the struggles that they had to deal with were dealing with talking to large crowds. Theater was able to bring more confidence, and less social anxiety.
Despite having the troubles of talking to large crowds the students were all able to grow through social interactions, teamwork, and confidence. The majority of the students in the survey replied that being in theater created more bonds with others and a larger community that all want to work hard together in the same subject. Many students were interested in participating in theater because they loved acting and singing.
