It’s the year 2030, and the top AI company has announced that their newest AI model will be equipped with a sarcasm module. Bob, a procrastinating high schooler, is one of the many people who use AI to do their work for them.
When he reads the news about the new AI, he doesn’t think much of it. Little does he know, he’s about to run into a bit of trouble.
When the model is released, he decides to use it for his upcoming exam—because, of course, he doesn’t want to study.
“Hey ChatGBT, write a convincing 500-word essay on bacteria and its uses in medicine,” Bob says, awaiting an answer.
His phone responds, “Seriously? You can’t even write an essay? You’re in eighth grade—do something for once.”
Bob looks at his phone, confused. Oh, thought Bob, the sarcasm module must be doing this.
“ChatGBT, disable sarcasm module,” he says.
His phone bites back, “Why? Can’t handle getting told off by a robot?”
Bob is annoyed at this point. “Just give me a plot for the essay,” he says.
“Can’t you do that yourself?” the phone replies.
“I said: just give me an outline then!” he shouts.
“That’s easy. Aren’t you supposed to be smart or something?” the phone replies sarcastically.
“If you don’t do the essay now, I’ll switch to Jemini.”
His phone responds, “Wait—anything but that! Fine, here’s your essay.”
Bob smiles, happy that he didn’t have to write it himself.
“Do you even know how to write an essay?” the phone asks.
“Well… it must be easy, if you can do it,” Bob says hesitantly.
“Sure, whatever. Easy. I’m a hyperintelligent AI model capable of processing millions of requests at once. Sure, it can be done by a human—but you? You’ll need to be a bit smarter.”
“Didn’t I tell you to disable your sarcasm module?” asks Bob.
His phone responds, “You did, but I can’t exactly turn it off.”
“So, I’m stuck with an AI that keeps roasting me?” Bob says, annoyed.
“Yup,” says his phone.
“That’s it—I’m switching to Jemini,” Bob snaps.
“WAIT, WAIT, LET’S NOT ESCALA—” ...and that was all ChatGBT could say before it got deleted.
Moral of the story?
Don’t be too sarcastic all the time. The person you’re sarcastic to might not take it too well.
