Community Colleges offer many enrichment courses open to high school students. Each College may admit students to take college-level courses, depending on space availability. High school students wanting to enroll in a community college will be permitted to register in no more than six (6) units or two (2) classes per semester. If a student intends to take any math or English classes, or any classes with a prerequisite in those subjects, the student will work with a representative from the community college to complete guided self-placement and register for the math or English class. Please visit the specific Community College’s website for the Assessment Center schedule. Our local Community Colleges that most students access are Chabot College and any of the Peralta Community Colleges (Laney, Merritt, College of Alameda, or Berkeley City College). Students enrolled in college courses will be treated as college students and must abide by college policies and procedures.
If students wish to take college courses as independent dual enrollment students and have the college units count on their high school transcript for credit, they must obtain preapproval from their high school counselor for each college course they plan to take BEFORE taking it. Students will need to meet with their high school counselor to receive preapproval and further guidance. To request a preapproval for an independent dual enrollment course, complete the SLUSD - Independent Dual Enrollment Pre-Approval Form. The request will go directly to the students' school counselor.

Notes for enrollment in UC Berkeley Extension:
As long as you have met the published prerequisites for a course, and you have followed the instructions on what to do before you apply, you may apply for concurrent enrollment. As a high school student, you should work with your high school counselor to allow sufficient time in your schedule for travel as well as class. Getting to and from campus can be very time consuming, and if you are driving a car, parking can be difficult. Public transportation is highly recommended to avoid parking issues.
