Who are We
A group of college students who see the benefits of equal division of domestic labor.
Our Goal
To help others understand the significance and benefits of creating harmony in the household by equally dividing the chores and turning the domestic labor into a spiritual and connecting experience to strengthen bonds within the household .
Why We Created Ma'at
Chores and domestic labor have had negative connotations throughout history. These cleaning tasks have always been seen as a servant’s job that no respectable person would want to do. Even through the 1900s domestic labor stayed a chore that only women would do as the housekeeper of the household. However, Ma’at, named for the Egyptian goddess of Harmony, aims to change the stereotypes surrounding domestic labor and turn them into a positive way to connect with others in the house and take control of your environment. With tools to help others learn how to communicate about house chores and divide the everyday labor within a household, they can strengthen their relationships and connections with each other leading to a stronger, happier, and healthier household. Berkeley University conducted a study that examined the unequal chores within heterosexual marriages and the impacts of this inequality. In an article they published about these disparities within the household they found that when the woman is burdened with more chores they “tend to feel more personal strain and are less satisfied with their marriage than those whose admin is more equal”(citation). Through our social media outreach, community events, and podcast, Ma’at aims to reframe domestic labor as being a spiritual and connecting experience that brings the members of the household closer together to create a house of harmony.
