SLU's University Core includes nineteen distinct requirements, each of which builds student achievement of our nine foundational Core Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). Each Core component area contributes to student achievement of our SLOs at either the introductory, developmental, or achievement level. You can learn more about our University Core learning outcomes and see a curricular map here.
Core assessment is undertaken by the University Undergraduate Core Committee (UUCC) in partnership with SLU's Office of University Assessment. Our first assessment project took place in the Fall 2021 - Spring 2022 academic year, when we conducted a targeted assessment of two First-Year Core courses - Ignite Seminar and Cura Personalis I: Self in Community - offered to a small group of 250 Core Pilot students in advance of our full Core launch year of 2022-23. You can find an early overview of our Core Assessment plan here.
Our first full round of assessment took place over the 22-23 academic year, when we assessed student achievement of SLO 1 (see below). Our second round, in 23-24, focused on SLOs 4 and 6. And in the current 24-25 academic year, we are assessing SLOs 2 and 9. You can see the full University Core Assessment plan here.

In AY 2023-24, this same subcommittee reviewed and interpreted the results of this assessment cycle, and offered concrete recommendations for improving future student achievement of this outcome. In 2024-25, the UUCC will work with our campus partners to act on these recommendations.
