Although pressure injuries are a preventable condition, they pose critical health issues and are one of the biggest challenges a healthcare organization faces daily. Apart from the high cost of treatment, pressure injuries significantly impact not only the patient’s lives but the providers’ ability to render appropriate care to their patients. I will be doing research about the pressure injuries developed by critical-care patients in the 5600 Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU) at Barnes Jewish Hospital. I will study how pressure injuries are developed, stages of pressure injuries, and the effect of pressure injuries on patients and clinicians. I will quantitively analyze the data regarding the incidence rate of pressure injuries. I will evaluate past and current interventions to reduce pressure injuries. By investigating how pressure injuries develop and complicate, we can determine strategies to prevent the progression of pressure injuries.
