This project examines specifically Catholics who identify as LGB+ and have made a deliberate choice to remain within the Catholic Church. The research covers the current Catholic doctrine promoting celibacy and chastity for LGB+ Catholics, the place of scripture in LGB+ theology and moral discernment, and surveys a variety of responses to the doctrine. Although most scholars categorize LGB+ responses by what their action is, such as being in religious life or choosing to marry outside of the Church but practice Catholicism, I propose that a spectrum from active conformity to active dissent can better examine how LGB+ individuals undergo moral discernment surrounding this tension. While examining LGB+ Catholic responses, a spectrum from conformity to dissent better categorizes individuals based on the theology they engage with and the relationship of their response to Catholic doctrine. This includes LGB+ Catholics who choose to remain celibate, those in vowed religious life including the priesthood, those who identify as ex-gay or push for conversion therapy, those who dissent personally, those who dissent publicly and advocate, and those who include organizations in their dissent. Each group interacts with Catholic theology in different ways, and when discerning a personal choice, most individuals established sound theology rooted in the Catholic faith. Ultimately, those who dissent from the Church do so with sound reasoning and discernment, which is a popular response in addition to those who choose celibacy on a personal level through passive dissent.

Dr. Dumler-Winckler served as the advisor to the thesis and provided insightful feedback, guidance, and support throughout the process. She helped to guide the outline and suggest ways of categorizing my argument and thoughts that was innovative and original. Her contributions were essential to the success and organization of the project.
