Internal vs External Referrals and How SSM Health Can Keep Care Within the Network via Epic

SSM Health utilizes the Epic electronic health record system. The electronic health record allows for health care providers to have all information necessary to give the best patient care and patient experience. SSM Health has seen an increase in referrals going outside of the SSM network. This project allows for a deep dive into the Epic platform to determine the cause of many external referrals. The Epic platform is a complex system that constantly goes through new implementations, edits, and builds. From research it has been determined that once a patient chooses a healthcare provider, they tend to stay within that network. Being able to refer patients to other providers in the SSM Health network allows for all health information to stay in one place and patients are able to build a positive relationship with providers.
