Disordered Eating Habits Amongst College Students

Transitioning into college is considered a high-risk time period for developing eating disorders, especially among young women (Muhlheim & Goldman, 2021). Unfortunately, due to stigma and lack of research on eating disorders amongst males, male college students are also at a high risk of developing eating disorders but are less likely to seek help (Striegel-Moore, 2009). The risk has amplified in pandemic settings. The National Eating Disorders Association reports a 10% increase in calls to its helpline in the past year. Many students experienced stress with the unprecedented shift to online classes that followed the lockdown during the pandemic. Now with the sudden emergence of in-person classes, students find they are balancing prioritizing their well-being with their academics (Jacobsen, 2021). This study aims to determine the prevalence of eating disorders during pandemic-induced factors among students at Saint Louis University.

Methodology: An anonymous survey was distributed via email link to undergraduate students attending Saint Louis University, Doisy College of Health Sciences. The study findings provide the foundation for the development of necessary programs for students both male and female attending Saint Louis University.
