A group of S2 girls have come up with extraordinary ideas for our school to reduce waste as part of the Industrial Cadet and Young Stem Leader awards.
S2 pupils Caitlin Branan, lilly May Mcdonald, Gaia Saminatha and, Ella Jane Sinclair all gained their bronze Industrial Cadet award this year alongside a Young Stem Leader award. They undertook a project in which they were asked to look at a zero-waste world. The girls researched companies that used a circular economy model and created a survey to find out about pupils and teachers views on recycling/zero waste.
They found that the school could be doing a lot more to reduce their waste. The girls then came up with several ideas to implement into the school that would greatly reduce the waste. An example of an idea the girls came up with was creating recycling bins within the social areas. With the plastic bottles that could be recycled the girls thought they could make bird feeders.
The girls wrote a report detailing all these initiatives and created models of their ideas. They then presented their findings to a panellist and where awarded their award.
