National 5 Laboratory Science – Building Practical Skills and Career Pathways
National 5 Laboratory Science equips learners with essential practical and analytical skills by combining Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in laboratory-based investigations. Pupils learn to design experiments, collect and analyse data, evaluate findings, and apply scientific knowledge to real-life contexts.
This course develops problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork, and reporting skills, all of which are highly valued in education, further training, and the workplace.
Potential careers include:
Healthcare and life sciences: nursing, medicine, biomedical science, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science, physiotherapy.
Scientific research and laboratory roles: biochemistry, microbiology, forensic science, food science, environmental science, analytical chemistry.
Engineering and technology: laboratory technician, process engineering, materials science, renewable energy technology.
Industrial and commercial sectors: pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food and drink manufacturing, quality control, environmental monitoring.
Education and science communication: teaching, STEM outreach, lab management, technical writing.
National 5 Laboratory Science prepares learners for further study at Higher and Advanced Higher levels in laboratory-based and applied sciences, offering a direct pathway into a wide range of STEM careers.
Laboratory Science: Careers Using Laboratory Science (National 5)
This unit introduces learners to the wide range of industries and services that use scientific and laboratory skills. Students investigate different industries and job‑roles, identify the skills, qualifications and experience needed for a laboratory science job of personal interest, and prepare for further education or employment by producing a CV and reviewing their own employability skills.
Laboratory Science: Working in a Laboratory (National 5)
In this unit learners gain experience of basic laboratory procedures: measuring and weighing quantities, handling chemicals, preparing solutions, and using instruments to measure, record and calculate results. They also follow safety and security procedures and carry out risk assessments in a laboratory environment.
Laboratory Science: Practical Skills (National 5)
This unit develops commonly‑used laboratory skills: working safely with potentially hazardous materials (including microorganisms and radioactivity), using scientific instrumentation, and performing techniques such as titration, chromatography and distillation.
Laboratory Science: Practical Investigation (National 5)
In this unit learners plan, carry out and evaluate a practical investigation. They devise a method to test a scientific aim or hypothesis, carry out the experiment safely and competently, analyse the results and produce a report with evaluation.
