Cell phones have been found to be among the biggest distractions from learning time. Even when we attempt to keep our phones away, we are distracted by alerts or knowing that the phone is there. The University of Chicago Press notes a study in which, “Results from two experiments indicate that even when people are successful at maintaining sustained attention—as when avoiding the temptation to check their phones—the mere presence of these devices reduces available cognitive capacity.” Teaching and learning are the primary reasons we have school each day. The purpose of this Kindergarten through 12th-grade policy is to minimize the distraction of cell phones during the school day so the focus can be on teaching and learning for all South Kingstown School District (SKSD) staff and students.
Improved Academic Performance
Improved Student Behavior
Improved Classroom Engagment
As a student enters school, they place their phone in their assigned Yondr pouch.
The pouch is closed and secured. Each student keeps their pouch throughout the day.
When leaving school, the student taps their pouch to an unlocking base to release their phone.
What if I want to reach my child during the school day?
We want our students to be engaged in their learning. If you need to contact your child during the school day, contact the main office at your child’s school
What if there is a school emergency?
In case of a school emergency, we direct our students to safety first, following our school emergency preparedness protocol.
Will my student’s phone be safe?
Students are in possession of their phone - in their Yondr pouch - for the entire school day.
What if the Yondr pouch gets damaged or a student is caught on their phone?
The Yondr pouch is the property of South Kingstown School District. If a student loses or damages their pouch, the same procedures already in place for vandalism, property misuse, or damage will be followed.
