Class Overview
What is Parallel Computing?
A process where large compute problems are broken down into smaller parts solved simultaneously by multiple processors
Why It Matters ?
because hardware limits have stopped single-core processors from getting faster, multi-core chips are now everywhere, and massive datasets require simultaneous processing.
Interesting Things You Can Do using PC:
Implement GenAI/ Machine Learning projects with TPUs/GPUs
Workstation/ Gaming PCs with commercial GPUs
Supercomputers to study climate change, nuclear decay, advances in AI
Future avenues like quantum computing, 3nm chips etc
Assignment 2 : Activities
Instructions : Please use good quality white sheets to write activites. We need them for documentation. Use a stickfile to store all your sheets with shared frontsheet :
Activity 1:
Draw a detailed computer system organization showing various components like ALU, CU, RAM along with their interactions. Make the architecture as deep as possible.
Activity 2:
Build a custom PC online(not real one) for 3 categories : Heavy computing applications (GenAI tasks, gaming), Video editing and workstation PC , and Casual home PC).
Mention these things for each category PC that you build.
The platform used for building it
The component stats(specs) ex : CPU used, RAM, Power suppy, Case used etc
The budget
The possible issues with the build
You can make use of custom PC building tools on sites like https://www.pcstudio.in/, https://vishalperipherals.com/, https://bitkart.com/
Activity 3:
Study Your Own CPU :
Use tools like CPU-z to obtain these things about your computer / Laptop.
CPU model
Architecture (Code Name)
Number of Physical cores
Number of logical processors (Threads)
Base clock
Boost clock (Core speed)
Cache hierarchy (L1 Data, L1 Instruction, L2,L3)
Virtualization support (Instructions : look for VT-x for Intel or AMD-V for AMD)
TDP (Power required)
RAM type/speed
Integrated GPU specs like name, size, speed, TDP
Dedicated GPU specs (if present) name, size, speed, TDP
Extract and run CPU-z : https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
