Our annual outdoor performance festival, SKAMpede, is a unique event in Canada, presenting 10-minute performances for an audience that travels along regional urban trails. 2026 marks the eighteenth edition of the family-friendly festival and will feature 40+ artists from a variety of performance disciplines.
Each year, we program ten companies as trail shows, evenly distributed on our Selkirk and Central tours. Tours start at a Launch Point, where groups of 15 audience members assemble before they depart and walk, ride, or roll from one show to the next, seeing five shows in a row. In recent years, performances have included opera, comedy, spoken word, performance art, drama, and puppetry. Shows take place in various settings, both urban and natural. Picture rows of trees, large swaths of grass, rocky beaches, concrete gardens, bridges, and natural rock formations all brought to life with innovative new performances! Our festival Hub features additional shows, concessions, raffle draws, live music, installations, and roving entertainment.
SKAMpede is our largest project each year. It is our most visible and highest-attended program. It allows us to create dialogue and partnership with like-minded arts practitioners (professional & non-professional), community groups and local experts while presenting high-quality, provocative theatre and performances that inspire and challenge audiences and artists alike.
We run full-day summer drama camps for students ages 5-15 throughout the summer. We often see students register for multiple weeks of camp to experience creating with new ensembles of peers. Most of our students who register in our fall and spring after-school classes met Theatre SKAM through our summer camp program. The camps focus on creative play and exploration and bring together children from various backgrounds for a fun-filled week of activities. Campers create a play from scratch each week, writing the story and building the costumes, props, and set pieces before finally performing their show for their parents at the end of the week.
Each year, we hire a mix of experienced teaching artists who are professional theatre practitioners and emerging teaching artists who are just starting out. It provides a tremendous opportunity for the camp counsellors to learn from each other while providing fun and creative camps for the children.
Productions of Rebel Rhythm and A Waste of Stage Time in May, plus two monthly events: Eco Hour and The Strange Hour: A Brunch Variety Show.
