(Fall 2021)
Hello! You've been directed to this page because there are a lot of questions which can easily be answered on this "Frequently Asked Questions" page. So here are the answers to these burning questions (so that you don't have to wait for your Science teacher to get a chance to respond) .
Just like you're readjusting to being inperson, and continuing to use Canvas, and online resources, so are your teachers. We do our best, just as we know you are doing your best.
Sincerely,
The Bret Harte Science Department
Read through the questions on this page.
Re-read it each time you have a question for your teacher because the answer may already be here (reduces wait time and is more efficient)
Refresh this page EACH time you use it and
Bookmark this page to make it easier to access when you have other questions.
Email your teacher if the question cannot be found on this page.
This holds true for questions put as comments in Canvas and also for questions you might email to your teachers.
If 50 students each take 5 minutes to look for their answers here before asking, 48 will find their answers. The two students with questions not answered here, will email get their answers a lot sooner!
Numbered frequently asked questions and answers
I know that there are many questions about our online learning, we answered some of them below, but there are many more. We will clarify more as time goes on, but until then, pages 3 through 6, and pages 11 through 13 in the 2020-2021 Covid-19 Instructional Guide, (click here for link) are useful for addressing some of the questions
1. My student is ill / needs to quarntine / is not at school for the day ... how does my student find out about make-up work?
We hope your student is feeling better soon! If you haven't already, contact the school attendance office to inform them of your student's absence and the reason. The state outlines what counts an excused absence.
When your student is absent, there will be minimal information along with the supporting links to make up the assigned work for the day(s) that were missed. This summary of the day's work will be found within Canvas, however there is no streaming of the classroom lessons by teachers nor students.
Idea: Teacher office hours are a good time to check in with follow up questions about the missed assignments.
Canvas will have information on the assignment and will include links and/or resources for information that isn't already in your Unit Workbook. Teachers might not be able to post it until dinner time on the day that the class occurred though.
Assignment due dates found on the Canvas assignments will indicate the due date for students that were in class. If at home, do your best to turn it in with the due date / communicate with the teacher when additional time is needed (obviously, there will be flexibility with the due dates for students that are quarantined/ill. Assignments will show up on the Canvas calendar on the date it is due, this can be confusing for many. We strongly suggest using the modules list for seeing which assignments you'll be working on for those days.
2. Where can I learn how to log into Canvas? Where are instructions to download Canvas apps? What about the Blended Learning Apps? How can I help my students be prepared for distance learning?
San Jose Unified's webpage Trainings for Families (click here) has access to these and more! Please note: the page continues to be updated with additional videos and information resources, as they become available. Some of our time during our class time includes showing students how to access and submit assignments.
3. How do I know if something is an optional assignment?
Assume that everything is required to help you work towards mastery of the content; if your student is absent, the modules list will be a great place for your student to start looking for information. Your teacher will explicitly tell you when there are choices for how to do an assignment, as well as if there are optional assignments available.
4. How and where do I turn in my work?
All work is being turned in through Canvas! (That's the plan at any rate, however since we are just starting with learning platform, as well as our Science Textbook's platform - there will be a period of adjustment. Make sure you keep any paper and electronic copies of your work so that you may refer back to them. This also helps if there is a glitch in the process of submitting your work). If you're having internet issues, or are ill, your parent will need to notify the Attendance Office. You will also need to check with your teacher and in Canvas to see what you can make up.

6. Will there always be a file to upload to turn in? or What am I supposed to turn in?
Assignments will be completed in a variety of ways. Examples of online assignments that teachers will have their students "turn in":
question(s) to answer during the WebEx meeting in the Chat, through Polls, or other methods,
hand written/ typed responses to the assigned questions to turn in through Canvas, as a Google Doc,
participating in the Canvas Discussion and/or commenting on responses,
a posted Google Form to complete,
a video to watch (link will be provided through Canvas) - some will pause and have you answer questions mid-way, others will have you take notes and answer questions at the end,
a specific file that you create and turn in through Canvas.
There are other types of assignments as well, students picked up two of the four textbooks for Science during their materials pick up day (book 1 and book 2) which covers content for the first semester. They will need to be kept in a safe, accessible place. Where did you put your Science workbooks? Click here to complete the Google form (that way your teacher might be able to help you find it, incase you forget where it got placed; you must be logged into your student OneLogIn account to complete the form). Second semester workbooks for Science will be distributed later.
7. How can I keep track of my student's attendance and work? Will Canvas let me see if they're completing assignments?
Based on what we've been told, attendance will be recorded by teachers in Portal, grades will be recorded in Canvas, both have parent access. We've found that having students show you their Canvas pages for each class is the most effective way to see if they're completing assignments. Some teachers use the modules list with requirements - if your teachers are doing this, each completed task will have a little check mark on the right side of the modules list. Red circles indicate incomplete/unattempted items.
We are certain there will be more questions & answers to add to this growing list, as time goes on about assignments and ideas. So check back & the answer may appear here! Thank you!
