Teaser:
Tsuki comes home to Mushroom Village to find his house robbed of every bit of furniture. At your leisure guide Tsuki to refurnish his home and catch up with friends. Mushroom Village runs at slow speed so this is a perfect game to unwind to.
Game Summary:
Tsuki's Odyssey is a passive adventure game where you can spend your days however you wish. Tsuki can fish for money, harvest crops, shop for homegoods, and decorate his home and garden. Stores rotate merchandise and locations keep a night and day schedule. Characters move locations and Tsuki interacts with his belongings without prompting from the player. You are also unable to stop him from doing as he pleases, even if he decides that it is time to sleep.
Critical Evaluation:
I enjoyed this game, however, it was too slow for me. After two days, I still only had seven locations to rotate through. There is a train station that is closed for business, but after researching, I found that the train station does not open up later in the game, but the developers are working on it. As I earned carrots, I spent them at two stores, but they only displayed a few items at a time. I would prefer a traditional store format with all inventory available at all times. The snark from cutesy characters is a fun feature. Unlike a questing game, characters give different responses, but if you push them too many times, they will tell you to move along.
Figure I Figure II Figure III Own Work: Snap shots of gameplay.
Creative Use for a Library Program
Library Garden/Seed Distribution: The currency of mushroom village is carrots. Tsuki harvests carrots every day to spend on furniture and home repairs. If your library has a community garden plant carrots with your teen group. If there is no space for a garden at the library hand out seed packets and instructions. Labeling the seed packets with the logo from Tsuki's Odyssey would tie in nicely.
Potential Challenge Issues and Defense Preparation:
Tsuki's Odyssey does not have a history of being challenged. As a free, mobile game it would not be a library material, more of a reader's advisory item. Keep in mind that although the game appears cute and without controversy, it is rated T for teen due to character development later in the game.
Reason for Inclusion:
Cozy gaming is a genre of gaming that has risen in popularity along with cozy crafting hobbies. The antithesis of fighting, racing, or leveled games, cozy games encourage casual play for stress relief. I have been interested in trying this style of gaming, and while it takes a moment to not have a clear goal list, I did adjust.
