The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag follow main character Morgan. Morgan is a fifteen year old who lives on a small fishing island. Her mom recently divorced and she lives with her younger brother. Morgan slipped and fell during a large storm and woke up okay, with a memory of being saved by a beautiful girl. Morgan is shocked when this girl from her nightmare drowning accident shows up in real life, and know all about her. The two girls become friends while Morgan keeps a secret of wanting to be more than friends.

This graphic novel is all about how keeping secrets and hiding who you truly are is not a happy life to live. Morgan is living life just to eventually leave the small fishing town where she lives. She hides who she is to her family, to her friends, and even to herself. When Keltie comes along, this causes Morgan to reevaluate her life and the secrets she has been keeping. The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag is a love story, a coming of age story, and self acceptance story all with beautiful illustrations. The lessons taught in this book are for teens, adults, and people of all ages.
A simple and yet effective activity that a library could do along side this graphic novel is create seashell jewelry that teens can give to those they love in life. To really tie the graphic novel into the activity, they can whisper secrets into the seashells and then when they give the jewelry to the person they love, it shows they trust them enough to keep their secrets.

This book does have LGBTQ representation, including same sex kissing that is illustrated. This could potentially upset some parents and other community members. Being aware of potential problems can help libraries be prepared with how they will handle situation if they arise. Staying calm, knowing the library policy, and directing those who are upset to fill out a from to challenge a book.

This is a very popular book among teens. It is famous on TikTok. It has also received many awards and honors. This is the type of graphic novel that ticks all the boxes, merit and popularity. Programs are these types of books show that librarians are in tune with what teens want.
