Galaxy: The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor is a story about the perfect teen, Taylor Barzelay. He is the star of the high school basketball team. He has too many friends to count. And a loving family at home.... but in reality, Taylor is actually an alien princess posing as a human to escape the war on her home planet. Just because life on the outside seems perfect, doesn't mean it always is. (Goodreads, 2022)
When your physical appearance doesn't match who you are on the inside, it can make life hard to life. People see Taylor as a popular high school athlete. He has many friends and a family that loves him, but inside he is a girl. Meeting the right person helps taylor realize that she should be herself. This a very brave thing to do. This journey of bravery is why I loved Galaxy: The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor. It is raw and and brave yet is funny and full of love. It shows that being brave enough to show who you are isn't always easy, but it's worth it.

What would you look like as an alien? This is a simple prompt, but after teens are doing drawing their alien counterparts, they should be given an opportunity to explain why they choose certain physical features. Teens may choose to look a certain way as to best express themselves in ways they cannot now. This is a great art project as well as a time to teens to let their imagination soar as well as be accepted no matter how they look.

Aliens, fashion, basketball, love, and David Bowie references, this graphic novel really does have it all! The illustrations are beautiful and the lessons learned with following along with main character Taylor are going to stick with you for a long time. This book is beautifully written and illustrated and hopefully will one day be the origin story for a great DC superhero. You won't be disappointed when reading Galaxy: The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor. (Book breakdown - galaxy: The prettiest star rises up all the way, 2022)
Potential Challenge Issues and Defense Preparation
This book has themes such as transgender identity and acceptance. This is something that should be included within libraries but could also come with controversy depending on how accepting the community is. This should not cause fear but just to stay informed on what lessons are included in the book and how they are needed for teens.
Teens are going through a time where they are trying to figure out who they are. This book helps not only represent that with words, but with pictures. This story shows the main character be brave enough to come forth and show who she truly is. This can be a difficult thing for teens. It can be easy for everyone to see your life as perfect when they are on the outside looking in, but life is hard when you are pretending to be someone you aren't and this book helps teens who are going through that.
