Evan Hansen writes letters to himself as a strategy given to him by his therapist. The letter ends up in the pocket of a kid from school that Evan doesn’t know very well. The kid ends up committing suicide that night with Evan’s letter in this pocket. This gives off the elusion that him and Evan were best friends, or possibly more. The movie tells the story of teen mental health, love, and coming of age.
The quality of the movie was very well done. This movie started as a book that become and musical that was made into a movie.
I enjoy musicals but this movie was not my favorite. I enjoyed the book, which I read after my younger sibling suggested it to me. They aren’t a very avid reader, so when they told me how much they loved a book, I was eager to read it. The movie was a decent adaption but missed a few elements (as movies usually do).
Writing letters to yourself is a helpful outlet. To incorporate this movie into a teen program, librarians could have teen write a letter or draw a picture to help them overcome their fears. Imagining the future you want helps you achieve the hard tasks that stand in the way. Letters and pictures do not need to be share, but emotions and reflections on the program can be considered and shared.
