OneSearch is the SJSU Martin Luther King, Jr. Library online catalog which allows students, faculty, and members of the community to search thousands of materials available at the library and across all CSU libraries; including books, journals, media, and more. This resource guide provides you with tips to help you facilitate the best practices when using the OneSearch catalog, including a collection of step-by-step guides and video tutorials.

If you are a SJSU student or SJPL patron, sign in to your OneSearch account. While you are not required to have an account to access the OneSearch catalog, signing in to your OneSearch account will grant you access to many useful features, such as viewing the full search results, renewing checked-out materials, requesting materials from other CSU libraries, and many more. To sign-in, follow these simple steps or watch our instructional video on the left.
To get started, visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library home page at library.sjsu.edu and clicking the "Advanced Search" link under the OneSearch search bar. Or, by visiting the OneSearch page directly here.
Locate and click on the "Sign In" link on the top right corner of the OneSearch page. A pop-up will appear. If you are an SJSU student or employee, click on the "SJSU student and employee login" link. If you are an SJPL patron, click on the "SJPL patron and guest login". You will be redirected to the login page.
SJSU students will be asked to log-in using their 9-digit Tower ID number and MySJSU password. Enter your ID number and password then click "Sign in".
SJPL patrons must have a full-access SJPL Library card to have access to a OneSearch account. To request an account, SJPL patrons with a full-access SJPL Library card must fill out and submit the online request form here. Once you have submitted the request form, you will receive an email with a user ID and password granting you access to OneSearch. Enter your new user ID and password into the login pop-up and click "Login".
You are now logged in to your OneSearch account. You now have full-access to OneSearch catalog features. You can also view your account details on the top-right corner of the page, where you can view an overview of your requests, loans, and fees.

When you first begin your search for items and materials, beginning with a basic search will give you some insight on what materials are available on the OneSearch catalog. To learn about beginning a basic search, follow these simple steps below or watch our instructional video on the left.

Enter a word or phrase into the search bar, such as the title, subject, author, or related keyword phrase.
Use AND, OR, NOT with your search phrase to narrow your search results. Use "AND" between keywords to search items that include all terms. Use "OR" between keywords to find items that include at least one of the searched terms. Use "NOT" between two keywords to narrow your results and exclude items that include certain words. For example, the search phrase "Los Angeles NOT Angeles" will find items that include the phrase "Los Angeles" but not "Angeles".
Once you have entered a phrase into the search bar, click on the search icon. You will be redirected to the search results page.
You have now completed a basic search. Your search results page will contain items related to the search phrase you have entered into the search bar.
Click on an item on the search results page to observe the item or material, an item page will pop-up providing the item or material details.

Completing an advanced search will allow you to further narrow down your results to include items and materials that best fit your informational needs. Completing an advanced search may narrow your search results from thousands of items, to a few items. You can choose to first perform a basic search by entering a search phrase into the OneSearch search bar and clicking on the search icon, or you can begin by clicking on the "Advanced Search" link, The "Advanced Search" link is found under the OneSearch search bar on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library home page and is also found directly next to the OneSearch bar on the OneSearch page. You can also access the "Advanced Search" page here.
The Advanced Search page will allow you to search using a variety of fields. Enter your initial search phrase on the top search bar. Enter any additional AND/OR/NOT search phrase into the additional fields. To add an additional AND/OR/NOT search phrase, click on "ADD A NEW LINE".
To search materials by type, click on the "Material Type" drop-down menu and select the desired material type.
To search materials by date, click on the "Publication Date" drop-down menu and select desired material publication date time frame. You can also click on "specific date" to narrow results down by a specific time frame.
You can choose to search for materials in different collections. Select between San Jose State Collections, California State University Collections (CSU+), and Articles+.
Once you have entered all desired search fields, click the "Search" button. You will be redirected to the search results page.
You have now completed an advanced search. Your search results will contain items and materials related to the combination of the search fields you entered.

One of the great aspects of using the OneSearch catalog is the ability to further refine your search results. Using the "Refine by" fields allow you to further narrow your results even further, making searching for the correct items and materials a breeze. You can choose to refine by availability, resource type, publication date, author, subject, location, and more. To learn how to refine your search results, follow these simple steps or watch our instructional video on the left.
To begin, you must first perform a basic or advanced search. For more information on completing a basic or advanced search, view tips 2 and 3.
Once you have completed a basic or advanced search, you will be redirected to the search results page. Once there, you will find the "Refine by" sidebar on the left side of the search results page. There, you will find a number of fields to help narrow down your results. These categories include availability, resource type, publication date, author, subject, location, library, LC classification, language, and database. Click on the fields within each category to further refine your results. Here are a few useful fields:
Under "Availability", click on the material availability that you are seeking to find. These fields may include "Full-Text online from SJSU", "Open Access", and "Peer-reviewed Journals", among others.
Under "Resource Type" click on the material resource type you are searching for. These fields may include "Articles", "Audio", or "Books", among others.
Under "Subject" click on the subject of the material or item you are searching for. These fields may include broad topics related to the initial search.
Under "Publication Date", enter the publication year range and click "Refine".
Hover over a field and click on the "Exclude This" button on the right to exclude the field from your search results.
As you click on the "Refine by" fields, the search results page will refresh and include items that fit within the search fields selected. Once you have clicked all desired fields, you have completed the process of refining your search results.

Peer-reviewed journals are articles written by professionals in a specified field which are then reviewed by fellow professionals within the same field before the article is published*. In college-level coursework, professors require students to use peer-reviewed journals when completing papers, projects, and other assignments. The OneSearch catalog allows you to further refine your search results to only include peer-reviewed journals. To learn more about how OneSearch sorts peer-reviewed journals, follow these simple steps below or watch our instructional video on the left.
Make sure you are logged in to your OneSearch account, many Peer-reviewed Journal items are not available without a OneSearch account. For help signing in, follow the steps in tip 1.
To begin, you must first perform a basic or advanced search. For more information on completing a basic or advanced search, view tips 2 and 3.
Once you have completed a basic or advanced search, you will be redirected to the search results page. Once there, you will find the "Refine by" sidebar on the left side of the search results page. Click on the field "Peer-reviewed Journals" underneath the "Availability" section as seen on the image to the left. Your search results page will refresh and will now only include peer-reviewed articles.
To ensure the item is peer-reviewed, locate the "Peer-Reviewed" label under each item. This label will confirm the item or material is peer-reviewed.

You can use your OneSearch account to save records and searches for future use. This is a great way to save items you have found during your search as a reference for future projects and assignments. To learn how to save records and searches, follow these simple steps below or watch our instructional video on the left.

To begin, you must first perform a basic or advanced search. For more information on completing a basic or advanced search, view tips 2 and 3.
To save a search, locate and click on the "Save query" button directly below the search bar. For a visual presentation, check out our video tutorial on the left of this tip. Once clicked, the "Save query" will be highlighted. This will indicate that the search is saved.
To save an item or record, hover over the item you have found on the search results page. Locate and click on the pin icon, this is the "add this item" icon. To remove the item from your saved list, simply click on the icon again. For a visual presentation, check out our video tutorial on the left of this tip.
To view your saved items and searches, click on your account drop-down menu on the top-left corner and click on "Saved Items". You will be redirected to the "My Favorites" page.
You have now successfully saved your items and searches for future use. You can access these items and searches on the "My Favorites" page. Contact us for further assistance in saving items and searches or troubleshooting issues.
The OneSearch catalog contains thousands of items that are available for view online. These items will be labeled as either "Full text available" or "Online access". To learn how to find and access these items, follow these simple steps below or watch our instructional video on the left.

Click on the "Full text online from SJSU" field under "Availability" on the "Refine by" sidebar. This will refresh your search results page and will now only include items that are full-text available.
Once you have found the item you are looking for, click on the underlined label titled "Full text available" or "Online access"; the item page will pop-up. You will find a series of databases that holds that item to view online. Click on one of the options available and you will be redirected to the item's online location.
You have now successfully located and accessed a "full text available" item.

The OneSearch catalog allows you to save an item from your search results by sending them to your email address. This is a great way to easily locate and items from your search results page. To learn how to send items from your search results page to an email address, follow these simple steps below or watch our instructional video on the left.
To begin, you must first perform a basic or advanced search. For more information on completing a basic or advanced search, view tips 2 and 3.
Once you have performed a basic or advanced search, you will be redirected to the search results page. Select an item on your search results page that you are choosing to send to your email address.
Once you have chosen an item to email, locate and click on the "E-mail" icon. For a visual presentation, refer to our instructional video to the left of this tip. The email subpage will pop-up.
Enter the email address you wish to send the item to and click "SEND". The item will be sent to the email address entered.
You have now successfully emailed an item from your search results page. For further assistance emailing items, contact us.
The OneSearch catalog allows you to create a citation for each of the items available in the catalog. You can use these citations to add to your reference page. To learn how to create a citation using the OneSearch catalog, follow these simple steps below or watch our instructional video on the left.
To begin, you must first perform a basic or advanced search. For more information on completing a basic or advanced search, view tips 2 and 3.
Once you have performed a basic or advanced search, you will be redirected to the search results page. Select an item on your search results page that you are choosing to create a citation.
Once you have chosen an item to create a citation, locate and click on the "Citation" icon. For a visual presentation, refer to our instructional video on the left of this tip. The citation subpage will pop-up.
You can select the citation style needed on the left of the citation subpage. The current* default citation style is APA (7th edition), but you can change this to styles such as Chicago (17th edition), or MLA (8th edition), among others.
You can copy the citation by clicking on the green "COPY THE CITATION TO CLIPBOARD" link. Once clicked, the link will say "Citation was copied".
You have now successfully created a citation for an item on your search results page. For further assistance in creating a citation, contact us.

You can use the OneSearch catalog to search and locate items from other CSU libraries. Some items may not be available at SJSU but might be available at another CSU library, SJSU students and faculty can request these items and pick them up at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. To get started, visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library home page at library.sjsu.edu and clicking the "Advanced Search" link under the OneSearch search bar. Or, by visiting the OneSearch page directly here.
On the OneSearch catalog page, click on the collections drop-down menu on the search bar. The default collection will be "San Jose State Collections". To access the CSU+ collection, click on "California State University Collections (CSU+)" from the drop=down menu.
Perform a basic or a basic or advanced search. For more information on completing a basic or advanced search, refer to tips 2 and 3. The search results page will include items available both at SJSU and at other CSU campuses.
To request an item not available at SJSU for pick up, click on the item page. Once there, locate and click on the "CSU+ Resource Sharing Request" link. The request form will pop-up.
The request form will ask for a volume number, if known, enter the volume number of the item you are looking for. Then hit "REQUEST".
You have successfully located a CSU+ item and submitted a request for pick up. You will receive an email from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library when your item is ready for pick up.
