The Academic Strategic Space, Scheduling, and Enrollment Team (ASSSET) provides leadership and oversight of academic space, scheduling, and enrollment, three areas critical to student success at San José State University. Launched in August 2023, this collaborative draws on the insights of experienced department schedulers, chairs, associate deans, and leaders across Academic Affairs as well as Student Affairs, FD&O, and IT. ASSSET team members meet monthly to train in new applications, review data, and generate recommendations that enable the University to make decisions based on emerging enrollment trends, build course schedules that meet student needs and interests, and, as a result, assign space most effectively.

AASCU's Student-Centered Course Scheduling (SCCS)
AASCU's Student-Centered Course Scheduling (SCCS)
AASCU is helping colleges and universities redesign course scheduling systems to accelerate student progress and completion, and share proven strategies with the field. This work is made possible through funding from Ascendium Education Group and Lumina Foundation, with additional support from the Gates Foundation. ASSSET is serving as the SCCS Project Team.
Project Period: AYs 2025-26 to 2027-28 | Kick-Off: November 2025
ASSSET previewed and provided important feedback in the design and testing of the new optimizer process as we refine our student-centered scheduling strategies to assign University Lecture Rooms to classes starting with the class schedule production for Fall 2025. This new process uses weighted criteria to prioritize room assignments replacing the manual deallocation of ULRs to colleges and departments.

ASSSET was a critical stakeholder group in helping implement the Ad Astra Course Planning Tool and the Academic Planning Tools suite, which will help SJSU stakeholders to make data-driven decisions regarding the course schedule and classroom utilization to provide our students with access to the necessary courses to improve retention rates, graduation rates, and student success.
