"An area of positive change brought about through the influence of Covid on our teaching practices has been the growth in online and digital learning and the increase in the sharing of ideas and resources between colleagues. In many cases, teachers had encountered valuable resources which were not being utilised by others in their department or Kura.
Through departmental meetings, in person and online, there has been a marked expansion in the sharing of these resources and “treasures.” Often these materials or websites are available for free, although there are sometimes extra levels of information or worksheets available for the payment of a fee.
Included below are a few of the excellent sites we have used at Rosmini in the teaching of Mathematics. While mainly focused on the secondary curriculum there are areas that are applicable to the senior primary school classes and intermediate and they are well worth the time spent exploring them.
A particularly useful resource, due to its New Zealand authorship, are the videos and materials produced by Nicola Petty (aka Dr Nic). Mostly secondary but there are a few with an interest for primary teachers.
Dr Nicola Petty is an expert in teaching and learning statistics and operations research. She spent the past 25 years developing online and physical learning resources for primary, secondary and university students. Nicola is a qualified high school mathematics teacher with additional experience teaching innovative primary school mathematics lessons. She has 20 years of experience teaching statistics and operations research in innovative ways at the University of Canterbury.
During 2021, and early 2022, through research, investigation, observations and discussions a group of Rosmini teachers were able to experiment with various modifications to our classroom management strategies to attempt to improve the student’s behaviour and this then extended into measuring any positive improvement in their grades.
The pertinent outcomes from the professional learning groups inquiry were then shared with the rest of the staff through a presentation. Although the oral address was not recorded, the initial thoughts which stimulated the groups reflections are attached below."
