Mr. Toni Grade 7/8

Class Overview
Grade 7 Math

In math this year, our focus is on increasing students’ comfort with rational numbers (fractions, and decimals) and integers. As always, students will be developing the processes of communicating, connecting with, using estimation and technology in, problem solving and reasoning with, and visualizing mathematics.

The following are the units students will be working on this year:

Number Sense: Divisibility rules, fraction and integer operations, decimals, percentages

Patterns and Relations: Solving equations, oral and written patterns

Shape and Space: Circles, area, graphing using Cartesian coordinates, transformations

Probability: Central tendency and range, circle graphs, sample spaces, probabilities as fractions

Grade 7 Science

In science this year, students will be working in three units: the Earth’s Crust, Particle Theory, and Ecosystems. They will continue to perform experiments and investigations as part of their hands-on learning experience. As always, there will be a focus on developing inquiry skills and the scientific method of investigation, as well as safety and lab skills. They will also participate in a science fair, which will be included as part of their mark.

Grade Eight Math

In math this year, our focus is on increasing students’ comfort with rational numbers (fractions, and decimals) and integers. As always, students will be developing the processes of communicating, connecting with, using estimation and technology in, problem solving and reasoning with, and visualizing mathematics. The following are the units students will be working on this year:

Number Sense: Squares and square roots, percentages, ratio and rate, integers and fraction operations

Patterns and Relations: Solving equations, graphing

Shape and Space: Pythagorean Theorem, surface area, nets of 3D objects, tessellations

Probability: Data presentation, probability used in games

Grade Eight Science

In science this year, students will be completing four units: Fluids, Water Systems, and Cells and Systems. They will continue to perform experiments and investigations as part of their hands-on learning experience. As always, there will be a focus on developing inquiry skills and the scientific method of investigation, as well as safety and lab skills. They will also participate in a science fair, which will be included as part of their mark.

Religion

In religion this year our focus is twofold. We will be looking at what type of person Christ called us to be by looking at the parables and analogies he presented to us. We will then focus on the history of the Church, with an emphasis on what issues the Church and the faithful worked through, and how it helped shape the Church as we know it today. The curriculum is based off of the Sadlier “We Believe” program.

About me

I grew up in Winnipeg, attending Van Walleghem School in Linden Woods, and then graduated from St. Paul's High School. I love reading about just about anything, but I found my passions travelling and hiking in different parts of the world. I worked in Thailand teaching for a year before returning to Winnipeg, and have been teaching at St. John Brebeuf ever since. I enjoy sharing my passions with youth, and always look forward to seeing them mature as they move through junior high and prepare for high school.
