Zonta Scholarship Winners 2009-2010

Hilo, Hawaii—Zonta Club of Hilo awarded three scholarship winners for the 2009-2010 academic year to three well deserving women in the Hilo community.

 

The $500 Nursing Scholarship winner is Cindy Ann Kalani, a 2nd semester nursing student at Hawaii Community College. One of her HawCC instructors praised her as an exemplary student who is an outstanding scholar who exemplifies leadership and fellowship skills. She was accepted into HawCC’s Nursing Program which only accepts 20 students each year. Her long-term goal is to obtain a Master’s degree in Nursing so she may become a Nurse Practitioner in the community to work with the underserved population on the Big Island. 

 

The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business winner of the $1,000 scholarship is Shirley Bellinger. She is employed at Hospice of Hilo. She has been working and attending school while supporting her family. She will be a full-time student at UHH and continue working full-time. Her goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant.

 

Our Young Women in Public Affairs winner of the $500 scholarship is Christine Economy, a recent graduate of Waiakea High School. Christine was also her class valedictorian.  She will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in Wharton. Christine credits her school for providing leadership opportunities and has been active both in student government and performed many community volunteering. Christine is impressed by what women can achieve these days and hope that one day she can also be recognized and become a leader.
