Hands Not for Hitting!

Breaking the cycle of violence has to start early.  For more than a decade, the Zonta Club of Hilo has taken the message "Hands Are Not For Hitting" to East Hawaii preschoolers. Zontians go into preschool classrooms and read the book of the same name, talk to the children about what other wonderful things hands can do, and then make hand print banners for each class.

In 2009, we began purchasing the books and giving them to each child—the child's first book in many cases, and for some, the first in the home.

2011
- In October we visited Parents And Children Together Hawaiian Beaches Head Start. We met the children and parents and promoted peaceful ways of problem solving by reading to the classrooms, “Hands Are Not For Hitting". The children were thrilled to receive a copy of the book to take home. The children also participated in a "Hands On" activity where their hands were painted and printed on fabric to be made into quilts. The club wrote what each child said their hands were for.

We also visited the Head Start program of Pueuo in Hilo with the same activity and message. This year Zonta was able to provide books for 93 children in 5 classrooms.
