Awareness & Advocacy

Besides direct service, Legislative Awareness & Advocacy is a means for Zontians to improve the status of women and women's human rights. The LAA committee seeks to influence—at the club, district and international levels—the laws and attitudes that affect women's lives.

Zonta Club of Hilo's LAA committee has set these goals & objectives:
• Identify local activities that implement LAA mission; partner with other community organizations where appropriate.
• Initiate local activities that fit LAA mission and engage others to participate.
• Identify community resources for women’s advocacy; inform & educate community of the availability.
• Keep abreast of ZI recommendations for advocacy and report to membership.
• Promote advocacy through service projects in coordination with Service Committee.
• Educate people about legal, political, economic, education, health and professional issues, which affect the lives of women and girls in our community.  Cooperate and coordinate with other organizations in such education.

2011-2012

For its first year as a standing committee, Zonta Hilo's LAA group kept a busy schedule.  It took over one of the club's signature projects:
Hands Are Not for Hitting!, taking the book and the message to an expanded list of preschools, carrying the message of non-violence. Each child was given a book, and left his or her handprint on our quilts with a message of better uses for hands.
Domestic Violence Prevention, participating in ralllies, vigils and sign-waving to reinforce the message.
Legislative Watch, keeping tabs on bills that impact women in the Hawaii State Legislature. Testifying where appropriate.
Denim Day, wearing denim and partnering with the prosecutor's office to highlight sexual violence pervention and spread the message that dress should not be a factor in sexual assault trials.
