Creating the addoninfo.txt File

The addoninfo.txt file is required by L4D2. It contains description information shown to the user via L4D2's Add-ons menu item.
  • In the VPK folder, create a text document with this name: addoninfo.txt
  • Copy-paste the following block of text into the file.
    "AddonInfo"
    {
    	AddonTitle "Rochelle => Jill Valentine Casual"
    	AddonVersion        "1.0"
    	AddonDescription "Jill Valentine from Resident Evil in her casual outfit."
    	AddonAuthor         "AUTHOR_NAME"
    	AddonAuthorSteamID  "AUTHOR_STEAM_ID"
    	AddonURL0           "ADDON_DOWNLOAD_LINK_OR_WEBSITE_ADDRESS"

    	AddonSteamAppID  550

    	AddonContent_BackgroundMovie 0
    	AddonContent_BossInfected    0
    	AddonContent_Campaign        0
    	AddonContent_CommonInfected  0
    	AddonContent_Map      0
    	AddonContent_Music    0
    	AddonContent_Prefab   0
    	AddonContent_Prop     0
    	AddonContent_Script   0
    	AddonContent_Skin     1
    	AddonContent_Sound    0
    	AddonContent_Spray    0
    	AddonContent_Survivor 1
    	AddonContent_Weapon      0
    	AddonContent_WeaponModel 0
    }

  • Replace the text in double-quotes for the first section of fields (AddonTitle to AddonURL0). See below for descriptions of the fields.
  • Save the file.

Field Descriptions

  • The AddonTitle will show on the left side of the Add-ons list and at the bottom when the addon is selected.
  • The AddonVersion will not show anywhere, but is good to change for each release to make it easier to fix any problems. Knowing which version a player is using can be very helpful.
  • The AddonDescription and AddonAuthor will show at the bottom when the addon is selected.
  • The AddonAuthorSteamID does not show anywhere but gives a standard place for your Steam ID.
  • The AddonURL0 does not show anywhere but gives a standard place for a download link of your addon or for your web site address.
  • The AddonContent_Skin and AddonContent_Survivor are set to 1 with everything else set to 0. This will show "Skins, Survivor Models" on the right side of the Add-ons list and at the bottom when the addon is selected. (Presumably, a new survivor model will have textures not found on the original survivor.) Using a survivor name (such as Ellis) instead of a 1 will not show anything extra, not even "Survivor Models".
