A Sense of History

Coming soon:

A visit at the Natural History Museum, London.
June 25th, 2009

I was fascinated by an empty pedestal. The statue of Richard Owen was on top of it and on a prominent display. This is the man who coined the word "Dinosaurs" and had the museum built to put the displays in. In the beginning, he sponsored Charles Darwin, but fell out with him over the evolution of species. This year is the 150 anniversary of the "Evolution of Species" and fossil and DNA evidence has been backing Darwin, and the Church of England now  accepts evolution as science. However in order to put Darwin into a more prominent position, they had to move Richard Owen somewhere else (round the corner from Ida the fossil) and the empty pedestal suddenly looks very symbolic about the transience of posthumous fame.
