LAKE SHORE MARKETPLACE

  • Address: 1458 Lake Shore Road
  • City: Gilford NH
  • Opening date: 1991

This shopping center used to be called the Rich’s Plaza when Rich’s department store was the anchor store. The store opened in 1991 and was was back then one of the most recent new concept stores by Rich’s. When Rich's closed in the mid 90's, Walmart opened one of its first stores of northern New Hampshire. Tjmaxx used to have a store at the plaza. At one point it moved to the new Shaw’s plaza nearby and was quickly replaced by HomeGoods, another Tjx chain.

The small Walmart store only had 69,700 sq.ft. of space, way below the size of current Walmart stores and Supercenters. Eventually, Hannaford proposed to relocate to the newly built Lowe’s-anchored Winnipesaukee Crossing across the street. CVS moved out to a free-standing building.

In 2011, Hannaford vacated the plaza as planned. There were rumors that Walmart would expand using space currently occupied by smaller stores or that were vacant.

In January 2012, the shopping center began to talk about a proposed Walmart expansion from 69,474-square-feet to 131,474-square-feet by incorporating the 62,000-square-feet that housed Fashion Bug, Bootleggers and Olympia Sports. The former Hannaford would be divided in three spaces for future tenants. The store indeed expanded to become a Supercenter. Meanwhile Petco opened in part of the former Hannaford.
