Camp 2014 and 2015

Middle School Camp 2014

Summer camp applications will be available March 2, 2015!

Summer camps are tailored to achieve three major goals:

  1. Build community among young women through computing
  2. Increase young women’s interest in computing
  3. Gain knowledge and exposure to introductory programming
  4. Drastically increase students’ confidence in C-STEM disciplines

Each goal is achieved through specific sets of activities implemented in the summer camp. Participants are exposed to computational thinking through a variety of interactive software tools. These tools, along with team building, career exploration, and leadership activities, show students that computer science can be a fun, creative, engaging, and rewarding field!

About our camps

YWiC summer camps provide a fresh and fun way to bring Computer Science (CS) to young women through informal education opportunities. YWiC brings performance and outcome potential in computing through the instruction of software platforms and hopefully build on the interest and fascination for technology that we all share! This fantastic program grew through the passion and commitment of undergraduate near-peers who serve as the mentors and connectors to CS. The expansion of YWiC into a multidimensional outreach program has directly impacted over 10,500 students across the state!

Our FREE YWiC summer, day camps will be hosted in June and held in Las Cruces on the New Mexico State University campus. We welcome applicants from out-of-town, but we do not provide housing or accommodations. Camps will run from 9:00am-2:00pm, with lunch provided. For the summer of 2015, middle and high school participants could be exposed to the following platforms:

LilyPad Arduino                                            Python
LEGO Mindstorm NXT Robotics                 Javascript
HTML                                                            SNAP!
Google Drive                                     Linux w Bash Commands
Careers in Computing                                  CS Unplugged
