THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 20th 2018

CUTLERS HALL AND SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL

The present Cutlers Hall was built in 1888 and is a Grade 11 listed building. It is the headquarters of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire and considered to be one of the finest Livery Halls in the country. It houses a collection of over 900 pieces of silver which includes a Sheffield marked piece for every year since the establishment of the Sheffield Assay Office in 1773. There is a selection of Hallamshire knives which go back to Elizabethan times and a large pocket knife with 75 blades! We will have coffee and biscuits when we arrive and then a tour lasting 11/2hours.

After lunch in one of the many eateries near by we will gather at the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul which is directly opposite the Cutlers Hall. The cathedral is the oldest building in Sheffield in the ancient heart of this great city. It has an unusual shape. The original parish church had an east-west axis but in 1914,when it became a Cathedral, it was decided to construct a new church incorporating the old but with a north-south axis. The steel nativity sculpture is very fitting for this city. We will have an hour’s tour, time for a cup of tea at their excellent café and leave at 4.00pm and the approximate time of arrival in York will be 5.30pm.

Pick up from The Pavilion Hotel 8.30am Memorial Gardens 8.45am Middlethorpe Grove 9.00am

The cost including coach, tour fees and gratuities is £19.50pp

                           BALTIC CAPITALS 1stJUNE - 10thJUNE 2019 10 Days.

We are delighted to announce our next U3A tour to the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The capitals of Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn are all highly individual with a wealth of historical buildings, linked by their communist past.

Saturday June 1st2019: We travel from York to Stansted by coach to catch a late afternoon Ryanair flight to Vilniustransferring to the three star Hotel Rudninkai for three nights, chosen for its closeness to the old centre and excellent web reviews.

Sunday June 2nd2019: After an introductory tour of the city, the afternoon is free with an optional tour to the medieval capital of Trakai and its famous 14thcentury castle set in the centre of a lake. In the evening we have a welcome dinner.

Monday 3rdJune: This day is free but I hope to arrange an optional trip to some local handicraft workshops. The KGB Museum would be interesting to do on your own or perhaps the funicular up Castle Hill for spectacular views.

Tuesday 4th June: We travel by coach to Riga through Lithuanian and Latvian countryside with a guide. We stop at the Hill of Crosses, an atmospheric place of pilgrimage, and Rundale Palace, a sumptuous display of aristocratic excess designed by the same architect as the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. We arrive in Riga to check in at the Hotel Hanza for three nights, another three star hotel chosen for its location and reviews.

Wednesday 5thJune: We meet for a guided tour of the “Paris of the North,” with the afternoon free to wander. Riga is known for its wooden houses, art nouveau buildings and medieval old town and has plenty of museums and churches to visit as well as the Latvian Ethnographic Museum.

Thursday 6thJune: A free day though I am arranging an optional boat tour of the canals and Daugava River for us all for an overview of the city from a different angle. Cameras ready!

Friday 7thJune: We travel by coach to Tallinn with a guide aboard. We make a stop at the interesting Ligatne Bunker, nine metres below ground, intended as a retreat for the Russian communist elite in the event of a nuclear attack. After a tour, we will be treated to a typical “worker lunch.” We also visit the Baltic coastal resort of Parnu before arriving in Tallinn and checking into the three star St. Barbara Hotel, close to the cobbled and walled old town, for three nights.

Saturday 8thJune: A guided city tour in the morning with the afternoon free and dinner at the hotel in the evening.

Sunday 9thJune: A free day for you to explore the many art museums or the Estonian Open Air Museum. I hope to arrange an optional tour of a Dominican monastery which has operated only by candle light since its medieval beginnings. That evening we have our farewell dinner in a local restaurant.

Monday 10thJune: We transfer to Tallinn airport for the flight back to Stansted arriving back in York early evening.
