Introduction to Counselling Skills - Shipley

Module One
Hours: 20 hours of attendance + directed study

Intended Audience:   This course is designed for people with no prior experience or training, who want to enhance their communication skills and/or may be thinking of counsellor training in the future.

Course Delivery:  The course will involve active learning with a lot of group work and pair work.  You will learn and practice counselling skills and will develop a basic understanding of theoretical concepts. Class sizes will normally be 10 – 12 people to ensure effective learning and tuition. 

Assessment: There is no formal assessment for this module but students are asked to keep a journal of learning.  All attendees completing the module will receive a certificate of attendance and transcript to show hours of study and topics covered. Regular attendance is required.

Progression:  On completion of this module you can proceed to Module 2 (10 weeks) where counselling skills are developed further and students are prepared for Level 3 Certificate training.

NB It is now a requirement for progression that students take on voluntary work where they are using counselling skills unless they are in professional or support work using counselling skills on a regular basis.

By the end of the module you will have had the opportunity to:

o Reach a basic understanding of what counselling involves and how it is different from other helping/supporting activities
o Develop initial counselling skills to help others or use in your current work as a supporting or helping professional
o Improve your communication and develop confidence in this form of helping
o Decide whether you want to train any further in this field
o Start to gain the hours needed to progress onto a Level 3 Certificate programme

Indicative Content: basic counselling skills, starting and ending sessions, empathy and sympathy, feedback skills, responding to individual needs, personal development, reflection and self-awareness work, basic ethics
