Welcome to our group's "home-made" website. We are a parent led support group based in York in the UK.
Our group is for families who are enlivened by those with a little extra (21st chromosome). Our overall aim is to create and develop the conditions which will enable our children with Down Syndrome to attain their full potential. For a full list of our aims please see here

Background
Our group started to get going formally following meetings of our 3-21 Saturday Club which we started as a trial in April 2012. Now firmly established, this club is a Saturday morning gathering for all members of the family what ever their age.  So far most of the families attending the group have younger children, but everyone is very welcome.  It's a very informal gathering with at bit of singing and signing, refreshments, kids play things and other families to chat to.  Please get in touch if you would like to know more.

Like to join?
We have an email contacts list through which we send out information about "What's on" and our monthly newsletters. Please get in touch if you want to be added.

Our members' web pages provide more information about the group. They are available to any local family who is enlivened by a member with a little extra (21st chromosome) and would like to join. To get access to the website you need to get in touch with us and also register for a Google account. Once you have an account sign in at the bottom of the page by clicking on the purple "sign in".
(For the purposes of definition we refer to the York area as within 25 miles of City of York Local Authority boundary, however if you fall outside that and want to join us don't worry - just get in touch!)

Some Specific Objectives
Over the next year or two we hope to:
  • Work with local NHS services to provide better support for new and expectant parents
  • Run training courses for parents and the professionals who support our families
  • Work with NHS providers and specialists in Down Syndrome to develop more regular and structured speech and language therapy for our children
  • Develop the activities that take place at our monthly Saturday club
  • Enable parents to attend specialist training at national venues, and share their knowledge with other local parents
  • Develop a local support network and specialist training for the teaching staff who work in mainstream schools providing support to our children
  • Develop a specialist resources library to share amongst families who need them
  • Provide regular events and activities for families to network, socialise and share experience
  • Develop our members Newsletter from email attachment into a direct email format
  • Thank our supporters by:
    • developing an email newsletter to keep them informed about our activities
