Mantra is a Sanskrit word consisting of two syllables: man, denoting the mind, and tra, indicating deliverance. In its strictest sense, a mantra is pure sound that delivers the mind from material illusion. That idea that our speech is intimately connected with our thought process, and even deeper psychological makeup, is reflected in popular beliefs in the ‘power of the spoken word’. Going even deeper, the idea that sound is fundamentally related with the creation of the material universe is also found in the Bible (John 1:1): “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
