The PAKT programme works with the whole family under a family youth work model. Family Youth Work opportunities, seek to involve the family as a whole, in a developmental programme that offers a series of activities and learning opportunities for both parent and child, with the core themes of any Family Youth Work programme being concerned with

  • Facilitating the participation of family members, in all aspects of the project, thereby facilitating the personal development of both parents and children
  • Enabling family members to explore different religious and social cultures within both their community and Ireland as a whole, thereby exploring the implications of the terms equity, diversity and interdependence to their lives
  • Commitment to exploring issues of concern within the group, as part of exploring issues within the community thereby, testing values and beliefs.

PAKT has been operating in Cobh since February 1999 and celebrated its 10 year anniversary last December. It combines 3 strands:

  • Children’s activities – This is the largest section of the programme and involves after-school activities for 6 – 12 year olds. This involves a variety of developmental and fun activities based on the needs and interests of the children involved.
  • Family events – monthly events which are designed for the whole family to participate in together.
  • Parents activities – occasional training, support or social events for PAKT parents. Recent events include an internet safety awareness training and a pampering event for Mother's Day. A Parents Committee has recently been formed to provide input to the planning of these 3 strands
Currently there are three sessions per week of children's activities; Monday (3pm-4.30pm), Thursday (3pm-4.30pm) and (5pm-6.30pm).
