Spirit of the Titanic - a community book

posted Feb 9, 2012, 4:45 AM by James Bilson
The YMCA and the STEP group have taken on the community book project which, in this, the 100year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, is a book about precisely that. The 'spirit' is the narrator of the story, a 15 year old boy who was the first person to be killed on Titanic - 2 years before it was launched. Samuel Scott was killed in the construction of Titanic in a Belfast shipyard. His spirit remains with Titanic as she sets sail on her maiden voyage and the story unfolds. On Monday 6th February, the books author, Nicola Pierce was in Cobh to give a talk on the book and told stories that she had uncovered during her research. She gave a captivating talk that both amazed us and affected us emotionally. The human stories and the effects on the families of those killed are sometimes forgotten in the overall 'Titanic' sinking story and she brought them back to the fore for all of those present.
