My courses emphasize the practice and the relevance to the real world.
I find that sharing my experience in the financial market and analyzing student-level data can effectively enhance students' motivation to learn.
Career
I received my PhD in International Business from National Taiwan University in 2009.
From 2005 to 2006, I was a Market Economist for analyzing interest rates and exchange rates in Jihsun International Financial Holding.
During the periods 2010-2011 and 2012-2016, I was the Division Chief, University Planning and Development Division, Research and Development Office (R&D Office), CYCU.
From 2016 to 2017, I was the Vice Dean, R&D Office, CYCU.
Due to work experience, my research interests are in the areas of higher education and financial markets.
Highlights
In many Asian countries, colleges use entrance exams to screen student quality, and students only can apply to one when colleges have exams on the same date.
Avery, Roth, and Lee (2014) study the college admissions reform in South Korea, and find that colleges with high prestige tend to conflict with the best one on the entrance exam dates before the policy reform.
In Chen and Kao (2014), we explore a general concept in college admissions in which students’ choice set is limited by colleges’ strategic action, called the conflicting strategy, such as early decision programs in the US or simultaneous entrance exams in Asia, in order to prevent multiple applications.
We recently finished two studies (empirical testing in Chen and Kao, 2023; experimental testing in Chen, Chen, and Kao, 2018) to justify the model prediction. We conclude that colleges’ prestige and students’ uncertainty about admissions outcomes are two important factors.
