MATHEMATICS 2050 LINEAR ALGEBRA I

Office Hours: Thursday 11:00-12:00, Friday 10:00-12:00, or by appointment.

Text: Elementary Linear Algebra with Applications,

by H. Anton and C. Rorres, 9^th Edition.

We will cover sections 1.1-7, 2.1-3, 3.1-5, 4.1-3, 10.1-3,

and, if time allows, parts of chapter 5.

Calculators: Calculators can be used for tests and assignments. HOWEVER, the only calculators allowed for labs, tests, and the final examination are the

CASIO fx 250, CASIO fx 260 or CASIO fx 280.

Evaluation: There will be two in-class tests, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday,

February 16 and Friday, March 19, and a 3-hour comprehensive final examination.

Grading scheme:

Tests 20% each

Assignments/Quizzes 10%

Final Examination 50%

If your final exam mark is higher than a score on a test,

the test score will be replaced with the final exam score.

Note: If you miss a test, then the mark for that test will be transferred to the final examination. Make-up tests will not be given.

• Vectors in 2-space and 3-space (7 lectures)
• Euclidean vector spaces and linear transformations (5 lectures)
• Subspaces and linear independence (4 lectures, if time allows)
• Complex numbers (2 lectures)
