WHO ARE WE?

The Chinese Association of Vaughan was formed in 1986 to address the needs of the Chinese community in Vaughan. The goals of the Association was to promote, support and protect the social and cultural interests of our local Chinese community, to bridge the government and the Chinese community as well as to promote harmony between the Chinese community and other local communities.

To accommodate the requests of residents, the Association was later expanded to include all of York region. The newly renamed York Central Chinese Canadian Association was registered with the Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Affairs in 1987 as a non-profit organization.

Since the beginning of the ‘80s, with the Chinese residents moved to the York Region, the membership also increased steadily. The Association holds regular weekly programs, youth leadership programs, informative seminars as well as fund raising activities for other non-profit organizations. The weekly programs include: Tai Chi class, Cantonese opera singing class, line-dance and ballroom dance classes, badminton and youth basketball practices.
The Association has taken an active role in the public arena, in nourishing the younger generation to co-operate and take responsibilities. At this date the Association has grown to be a representative of the Chinese residents and a force in the community.

In the new Millennium, in addition to continue serving the community, the Association  will participate more actively in the development of youth programs and the training of youth leaders.

The year 2000 was a year of actions, the Association has taken a gigantic leap in promoting the Chinese culture. In April, the Association, in conjunction with two other organizations, co-organized a very successful “1st Chinese Literary and Arts Contest for the Youth” (第一屆中華青少年學藝比賽)
. The Contest has drawn over 1,300 applications in six categories. The overwhelming response assured the importance of Chinese heritage in our community.

In November, the Association organized a fund raising event to support non-charitable organizations in the mainstream society. Over $12,000.00 was raised through the “Dance Fever Night” for Yee Hong Wellness Foundation. This would never be achieved without your active participation and generous donation.

The “Summer Youth Leadership” program, in its fourth year, was another favorable project.
It is most satisfying to see the youths, make good use of the summer month, grew in confidence and improved in communication skills. Needless to say, the regular evening programs, other than being learning sessions, serve as the berth of friendship.

Congratulations to Peggy Lau and Kevin Li, recipients of the Year 2000 Gold Award and Youth Scholarship Award. Both have made exceptional contribution in the development of the Association.
