I am an associate professor of philosophy at Oregon Tech in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department.
At Oregon Tech, I have developed and now teach classes in logic, medical ethics, environmental ethics, business and professional ethics, the ethics of emerging technologies, and philosophy of science. I also co-designed and now co-coordinate the Arts, Literature & Philosophy minor--a great complement to any major at Oregon Tech.
My primary areas of research are environmental ethics and philosophy of science. My current work in applied ethics explores problems at the leading edge of scientific discovery and practice. Here, I examine the ethics of cognitive enhancement and de-extinction, as well as ethical implications of genetic engineering for conservation biology. My current research in the philosophy of science focuses on the relations between scientific models and explanations and how highly idealized models can produce understanding.
When I am not working on philosophy, I enjoy hiking, camping, foraging for mushrooms, cooking, farmer's markets, and swimming.
