New Divers & New Club Members

By Dick Carmody

Brian and George came up with the idea of letting people at the YMCA Aquatic Center experience a ‘discover scuba’ type of event (blow bubbles).

Brian thinks that this will get new divers.  George thinks this will get new club members.

The idea is to set up a display at the Y (see picture) with a poster, dive gear display, and brochures.

They could then sign up at the front desk with a $20 deposit for the session.

We met with Bob Romero who runs the Aquatic center and they agreed that we could use the pool for one hour after they had closed on at 5:30 Sunday, February 26.  They would pay for the life guards.  And they would add the club and instructors to their liability insurance.

So the plan now is to see how many sign up.  I believe that the maximum should be 6; Two for each instructor (Brian DM, Max OWSI, and me MSDT).  We have limited it to age of 21+ and have asked each to give shirt and shoe size for BC and fins.

George and I presented at the YDC meeting and several said that they might have equipment we could borrow.

So now the display has been up for two days (as of February 14.)  It really looks good and we need to compliment Brian and George.

(Yakima Dive Club, Sara, Ron & Chris, presented at medical/doctors school in Terrace Heights)

Hi everyone, here is a photo of the YDC display at PNWU of Medical Sciences on Friday, August 12th.

The response was phenomenal! There were so many interested students and faculty and interaction was very excited and positive. The most common comments were "I didn't know there was a dive club in Yakima" and "Where do you dive?"

Thanks, Sara

Sara says, ‘they had a terrific time, and to invite the people to club meetings, because think at least some will be looking for further information on meetings, certification and dive trips.' ***

 YDC’s ‘Adopt A Highway’ CleanUp

Part I - September 14

We had a great turn out for our road cleanup on September 14th.  The 12 total workers were Chad, Ciro, Bev, Steve, Christie, Max, Sarah, Curt, Sally, George and Kimberly.  Worked from 9 to 12 and filled every bag that DOT gave us. About 100. Unfortunately we did not finish the stretch of highway, so it was decided that we needed to go out and do a second cleanup before winter hits on Saturday the 28th, meeting at Shari's parking lot again at 9 o’clock.

YDC’s Adopt A Highway CleanUp Part II-R

The club’s second cleanup date to complete what was not done on the first date was set for Saturday the 28th of September.

Within the 14 days from our first cleanup date, our weather changed from 70 degree and sunny days to 45, cloudy and drizzle.  The forecast for Saturday was rain.  So, we moved our cleanup to the next day, Sunday which was suppose to be partly cloudy and dry?

Yes, you know what happened.  Saturday was a dry morning and Sunday morning we had clouds and cold NE wind with drizzle.

Kudos to the nine club members,  George, Kimberly, Chad, Jenifer, Dennis, Paul, Shirley, Dick and Kenn who braved the weather, labored from 9 am to 1 pm and filled another 100+ liter bags.  (That is over 200 bags for the two cleanup times by the club).

Thank You George and Kimberly for all your time to prepare ….. setting out/putting away the highway signs to warn drivers, pick-up-grabber sticks, orange vest and hard hats.  (Also the great chocolate chip cookies). *****

View our short multimedia on our Facebook page.  Be sure to activate sound.  https://www.facebook.com/Yakima-Dive-Club-265551843557827/

The Yakima Dive Club's Hood Canal Dive Adventures at The Yellow House was a fun weekend for the dozen mates.  We pre celebrated 'International Talk Like A Pirate Day' with appropriate attire and decorations.

Three GPO's and one red ocotos in 'Pirate's Cove' was a bonus to see besides all the other marine life forms.

Great food and social time by all.

Multimedia presentation will be shown at the October club meeting and more photos in the October newsletters.

Here is the link to the 'Go Fund Me for Randy & Danette:

Go Fund Me Page - Click Here

One of our good friends, Randy Tadlock, has suffered a

serious injury.  While hunting, his gun discharged and entered his calf,

severing an artery, and exited through his foot.

He was taken to Yakima Virginia Mason then on to Harborview Medical

Center.  He has been in the Intensive Care Unit and today had surgery to

remove his leg at the knee due to the seriousness of his injury.

In discussions with Danette they have been giving all of their thoughts

to Randy's survival, amputation, and his getting through this extremely

life-threatening initial phase of his injury.

Their plan is to be home by next Wednesday, January 9th, the  but they

suggest no guests for a few weeks as he recovers.

With both of them out of work for, I would guess an extended period of

time, I know they will need, and greatly appreciate any help they could

get.

Any dontation in this Go-Fund-Me account would be appreciated.

However, if you don't feel comfortable donating here there are

other options to help them.

HAPO Credit Union is setting up a donation account for Randy and

Danette as that's where they bank.  Danette and

the bank Manager are in the process of setting that up.  That may take a

few days but donations can be made as follows.

1.  Any HAPO Credit Union can take donations for Randy and Danette.  You

can either walk into a local credit union or mail a check.  Put on the check

or tell the teller at the Credit Union that it's for

     The Tadlock Charity donation account.

     HAPO CREDIT UNION

     903 Seattle Slew Run

     Yakima, WA 98908

     Attn: Bank Mgr. Rayna

Danette is exhausted, as you can imagine.  She's extremely grateful that

we would even consider helping them out.  She, in fact hadn't even given

thought to the needs of the future as they have been so engrossed in the

immediate needs and Randy's survival..

For those that don't know Randy and Danette, they

are two of the kindest and most caring people you will ever meet.  They

have been members of the Yakima Dive Club for a long time and many of us

have become close friends with them outside the club.  They are truly

wonderful people.  (from Kathy S.)

This meal will include turkey with mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberries and pumpkin pie for dessert.

from JoAnne...

I thought it was only appropriate to post something about an amazing man and one of our greatest fellow divers. Dan White will be missed!

Daniel Ivan White passed away early this morning after a hard-fought battle with cancer. His wife of 47 years, Shirlie, and his children, Wendi and Brandon, were with him. He had just turned 70 years old. He touched many lives on his journey through this life.As a husband, a father, a grandfather, a teacher, a scuba instructor, a charter bus driver, a friend, a mentor, he was known for his wit, his humor and his smile. He loved the outdoors, the ocean and being on a boat, and his dog(s). He believed that his legacy was his children: Wendi and Nick and their son (due in January), Brandon and Sarah and their children, Hudson and Piper. He was very proud of them and what they have done with their lives. He will be greatly missed by those who loved and knew him. A memorial service is planned for next spring.

From Ron Montgomery at Bonaire , March 2016

Today I went snorkeling again with Sara and the other scuba divers (I snorkeled, everyone else scuba dived).

When we came back to the dock I took the next step and, using Sara's diver gear, took my first ever scuba dive. A short dive of 18 minutes at a depth of 34 feet. The first 2 feet was the hardest...panic was setting in, but I managed to calm myself down. Snorkeling was great, but I could see so much more and up close!

Many thanks to Dick Carmody, Jim, Albert, Diane for helping me through the dive, along with the others on the dock, Leslie, Sara, Paula, Katie. And congratulations to Jacquie, who took her first dive alongside me.

2015-17 Hunting Season Development

It's time to begin developing the 2015-2017 hunting seasons.  This year we will be taking a slightly different approach to what we did for the last three year package.  Once again the process will have three phases: 1) Issue Scoping; 2) Refining Alternatives; and 3) Recommendations, with public input taken during each phase.

The first opportunity for you to participate in the process is during the "Issue Scoping" phase.  This year we will be using a web form to collect and track all suggestions that you would like to have considered during the development of the three-year package.  The public comment period will be from Wednesday, June 18th through Friday, July 18th.

To participate, please go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/hunting/regulations/seasonsetting/

Thank you for taking the time to help shape the upcoming hunting seasons.

I submitted pictures for a photo contest some years ago to this Chocolate candy company who made chocolates in the shape of seahorses and shells, etc.  Just got this e-mail from them asking for submission of pictures to this project seahorse site.  Maybe you can put it in the newsletter or the club's site, so anyone can participate.    Sally

From: iSeahorse Administrator <iseahorse@projectseahorse.org>

Date: July 2, 2014 4:26:24 PM PDT

Subject: Guylian Seahorse Photo Submission

Dear Sally,

I am contacting you on behalf of Project Seahorse, a marine conservation organization based at the University of British Columbia and Zoological Society of London.

A few years ago you submitted some beautiful seahorse photos to Guylian’s “Seahorses of the World” photo competition. Guylian is one of our major sponsors and the competition is an important event that supports our seahorse conservation work

In 2013, Project Seahorse launched an exciting new ‘citizen science’ initiative called iSeahorse. The purpose of iSeahorse is to use photos and data gathered by divers around the world to help us, and other scientists, assess and protect global seahorse populations.

We are collecting these materials through our iSeahorse website (www.iseahorse.org) and free iPhone app (search ‘iSeahorse Explore’ in the App Store). Anyone can post their seahorse sightings to iSeahorse, and it will make a huge difference to the long-term conservation of these amazing animals.

We would like to invite you become a contributor to iSeahorse. It’s fast and easy. Just visit www.iseahorse.org or download the app, register for an account, and upload your seahorse photos, including those you entered in the Guylian Seahorses of the World photo competition.

You’ll be able to view your sightings, along with those of hundreds of other citizen scientists, on iSeahorse’s interactive map. You can also comment on sightings and help with species identifications on a special ID forum. And you’ll be eligible for our monthly prize for the most unique or beautiful sighting.

If you have any questions about iSeahorse or Project Seahorse, or need assistance adding your observation to the website, please do not hesitate to contact me at iseahorse@projectseahorse.org. I’ll be happy to help!

Was At Edmonds

Andrea, Gary and Dick braved the drifting snow to go diving at Edmonds! While the air had warmed up to a balmy 34, the water was absolutely bath like at 45 degrees. Lots of Ling Cod and eggs and several Cabezons that came out after us. A few star fish that showed the effects of the wasting disease.

After 50 minutes, we got out and it took Dick several minutes to get his fingers to work and operate the releases on his BC. — at Brackett's Landing Park.
