Introduction

When we read the Bible we must read it from the mindset of the writer and not from our own way of thinking. The author's of the Bible lived in a culture that is very different from our own and they perceived the world from a different perspective. If we truly want to grasp what the authors were trying to say, then we must remove our westernized thinking caps and replace them with the thinking cap of one from the Ancient Near East.

The Hebrew phrase Yahweh Elohim can be translated two ways, Yahweh the God (or more literally “mighty one”) or Yahweh of the gods (or more literally “mighty ones”). Both Jewish and Christian Bible will translate this as LORD God, which in reality completely ignores the grammar and vocabulary of this phrase. This study will examine this phrase in very close detail revealing the Ancient perspective of who Yahweh is and what his relationship with the Elohim is.
