NEW DEVELOPMENT:

Harry Dean's #1 defender, friend, and ally and co-author of Harry's anecdotal memoir (Paul Trejo), recently posted the following statement on the Education Forum website (after 7 long years of debate):

"Nevertheless, Harry Dean's honest account to me has cleared up the record.  Harry Dean today admits honestly that he was never an official FBI informant. That should be enough for anybody. "

However, unfortunately, there is no public statement to that effect by Harry Dean.  The actual record of what Harry has stated over the past 50 years is as follows:

1. In 1961, in his letter to JFK, Harry stated about the FBI-Chicago.. "...they ask me to stay in [the FPCC] and pass on all information. I did so gladly, recently they stated I have done a great one-man undercover job against the Fair Play Communists."

2.  In his November 1963 letter to J. Edgar Hoover, Harry described himself as "an undercover agent"

3.  In his December 1964 letter to the Director of the Joe Pyne Program, Harry described how the FBI "ask if I would pass info to them..." and  "FBI said best one man undercover informante (sic) job seen…"

4.  In Harry's 11/21/75 affidavit, he wrote about himself that:

"I was recruited by U.S. National Security Intelligence by their uniquely convincing tactics that assure patriotic service from the right person, in the right place, at the right time."

In his 1990 self-published memoir (Crosstrails) Harry wrote:

"I was recruited by U.S. Intelligence by their uniquely convincing tactics.... { to avoid being indicted as an unregistered agent of a foriegn (sic) government}."

 5. In July 2005, in reply to questions posed to Harry by John Simkin on Education Forum website, Harry stated that he was "advising the Bureau as requestedregarding various individuals and groups (my emphasis on "as requested").  Harry also commented that:  "In the time frame of being appointed acting secretary of FPCC {Chicago} I was given the task of entering Cuba to gather information for U.S. Intelligence."

6.  AND in August 2005, Harry made this even more explicit when he declared:

"Re: FBI they always denie [sic] associations with spys/informants for their protection and in my case because in 1965 I blabbed on TV, Radio and newspapers re; spying for the FBI in order to cut loose from that fearful existance of near five year involvement with them and the Cuba waste of life. My main task then was to openly expose the people that I knew, who hastened the death of President Kennedy."

7.  In January 2006, Harry replied to an inquiry by stating:

"Later, when I joined more openly with anti-Castro, anti-Communist persons and groups did I become anti-Kennedy, even while doing assignments for the Feds..."  [my underlining for emphasis]

8.  In August 2012 Paul Trejo wrote in Education Forum: (I underline some key portions of Paul's message)

"Harry became a spy for the FBI at this point, and he used his undercover role to obtain the release of some US citizens from Cuban prisons (although Harry was unable to save them all). Harry Dean provided useful information to the FBI in those days.  In 1960, says Harry, the FBI gave him a further request -- to spy on the JBS (John Birch Society) in Southen California, and to send the FBI any seditionist information that he picked up. (By the way, we know the FBI had already spied on the JBS in 1959, because Hoover declared them Unamerican in 1959, and set a policy that no FBI agent could ever become a member of the JBS.)"

9.  Furthermore, Paul wrote in April 2012 that:

"By 1962, Harry Dean had successfully completed a mission for the FBI as an undercover agent investigating and reporting on Fidel Castro in Cuba. Now, in 1963, Harry Dean was on a mission for the FBI as an undercover agent investigating and reporting on the John Birch Society in Southern California."  [my underlining for emphasis]

10.  Harry has repeatedly written that he was a "political spy" for the FBI and in his 1966 flyer captioned "I Confess" Harry described himself as "an undercover informant to the FBI".

ALL of these descriptive terms (i.e. asked me, recruited by, requested, given the task of, spying for, undercover informant, political spy, doing assignments for, etc.) have only one normal customary meaning in the context of contacts with the FBI or with intelligence agencies generally -- namely, that Harry has claimed over a period of 50 years that he was an informant and undercover operative for U.S. intelligence agencies and working at their request and under their direction (i.e. FBI and CIA).

This webpage will be devoted to presenting a summary of information appearing in FBI files (and other sources) pertaining to Harry Dean.  Harry's FBI HQ file (HQ 62-109068) and his FBI-Los Angeles field file (Los Angeles 105-12933) are now at NARA (College Park MD).  His Chicago field file (Chicago 100-38257) was destroyed in May 1990.

In the future, I will be presenting a detailed analysis of what the FBI documents reveal about Harry's story that he was an FBI "informant" or "undercover agent" starting in the summer of 1960 in Chicago and then continuing in the summer of 1961 when he moved to Los Angeles and (according to Harry) continuing until 1965.

Harry has claimed for 50 years that he was "recruited" by U.S. intelligence agencies to provide information to the FBI and CIA about the Fair Play For Cuba Committee and/or about various pro-Castro and anti-Castro individuals and organizations (such as Alpha 66 and JURE) -- along with providing information about various right-wing individuals and organizations including the Minutemen and John Birch Society in southern California.

In addition, Harry claims that in the summer of 1961 when he moved to southern California (from Chicago), he began a close relationship with the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Los Angeles field office (Wesley Grapp). Harry states that during that relationship, he told Wesley Grapp about a "plot" by John Birch Society members, the object of which was the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

SECTION ONE

FBI LOS ANGELES FILE ON HARRY DEAN (Los Angeles 105-12933)

This first section consists of a detailed summary of every serial contained in the FBI-Los Angeles field file on Harry Dean (Los Angeles 105-12933).

In the near future, I will provide an analysis of what these (and other documents) reveal about Harry's 50-year-old story as he has told it in messages he has posted online on the Education Forum website in thread "Harry Dean Memoirs"  http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=4269   AND in terms of the eBook published in October 2013 which was written by Paul Trejo based upon his interviews with Harry over a one-year period.

That eBook is entitled "Harry Dean's Confessions: I Might Have Killed JFK"  - available here:   https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/367550

Note:  Paul Trejo has recently indicated that there will be a second edition published that will correct what even Paul now recognizes as major materially important errors in the first edition of the eBook -- particularly with respect to the identity of the Los Angeles FBI Agent(s) whom Harry claims he contacted with his reports about a "JBS plot" to murder JFK and the date(s) when those contacts allegedly occurred.

FBI LOS ANGELES FILE 105-12933 ON HARRY DEAN  (*65 serials, 265 pages)

[*However serial numbers 28 and 39 were inadvertently skipped during serialization]

[NARA identification code: RG 65, 650/70/14/5, box 1]

NOTE:

Harry always used ALL CAPS for his typewritten correspondence.  In addition, Harry often runs his sentences or sentence/thought fragments together or uses inappropriate punctuation and no paragraphing.  Consequently, often his comments are (as will be seen from comments made by some Los Angeles FBI Agents) "rambling" or "incoherent" or otherwise inscrutable.

SA Claude E. Willis to SAC LAX

“On July 13, 1962, Jose Acosta, Teller, 7th and Witmer Branch, Security First National Bank, asked the writer, while cashing a check, if I would be interested in receiving some information about a bank customer…Acosta advised that he has spoken about three times to a customer by the name of Harry Dean, who indicated to Acosta that he had met and talked to Fidel Castro, but later became anti-Castro.  Acosta stated that he questions if Dean is actually anti-Castro, because of a statement made to Miss Joyce Fordyce, Bookkeeper, at the same bank on July 12, 1962.  After it was noted that Dean had overdrawn his account, Miss Fordyce told him that a charge would be made by the bank because of this.  Dean then replied, ‘Well, if you are going to be so damned capitalistic!’ (Miss Fordyce verified this statement to the writer on July 13, 1962.)  Acosta advised that Harry Dean’s account reveals he resides at 2947 Wynwood Lane, Los Angeles, California, was born at Detroit, Michigan, mother’s maiden name is Collar, and he has had an account at Union Bank, 8th and Hill Branch.  His occupation is listed as contractor at home address.  The Los Angeles indices has several subversive type references on the name Harry Dean.  The Indices Search Slip is being attached hereto.  The above information was discussed with SA William J. McCauley, who handles Cuban matters, and he suggested that a new 105-case be opened and assigned to him for appropriate investigation.”

SAC LAX to SAC Chicago

LAX advised Chicago FBI office about phone conversation which Harry had with SA William J. McCauley.   During that phone conversation, Harry “confided that he had been an informant for the Chicago Office, having been a Secretary of the Chicago chapter of the FPCC, but that largely because his wife had become very upset over his activities on behalf of the FBI, he had discontinued his informant activities and had come to the LAX area about one year ago, and is now employed as a plasterer operating out of the Union Office on Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles.   He added that he has, since his arrival in Los Angeles, had casual contact with Edgar and Marjorie Swabeck, whom he had previously known in the Chicago area, and from them has learned that Marjorie Swabeck is secretary of the LAX chapter of the FPCC at the present time.  He said that he otherwise has taken no particular interest in the FPCC, and that while he himself is personally not averse to resuming informant activities in behalf of the FBI, he hesitates to do so because of his wife’s feeling in the matter.  The Chicago Office is requested to verify and furnish a brief summary of the subject’s background, particularly his activities as an informant and his reliability while known to the Chicago office.”

SAC Chicago to SAC LAX

“Dean first called the Chicago Office in August, 1960, to report that he had been elected Recording Secretary, Chicago Chapter, FPCC. He did not divulge his name and address at this time.  Later in the same month he called this office, stating his name and advising he was residing at 1540 Central Avenue, Whiting, Indiana, and that he owned his own business, the Whiting Plastering Company.  He told of his connections with the FPCC, furnished information concerning the leadership of this organization, and said he would be amenable to an interview with an agent of the FBI.  The Indianapolis Office conducted an inquiry in Whiting, Indiana, in September 1960.  Detective Captain Edward Grabovac, Whiting, Indiana Police Department, advised that Dean, whose real name he believed to be Gordon Hunt and who had used the name George R. Baker, had skipped town and the Whiting PD had a warrant for his arrest on bad check charges. Grabovac said Dean was a self-employed plasterer.  The Whiting, Indiana PD procured an identification record from the Detroit, Michigan PD under FBI #4657880.  This record revealed that Dean had been committed as a mental patient in Canada in 1948 and was sentenced at Chatham, Ontario, for breaking and entering to ‘one year indefinite’.  At this time, Dean had one arrest by the Detroit PD for disturbing a religious meeting and two arrests for using indecent and obscene language.  He was also AWOL from Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1949.  In December 1960, Dean again called this Office to report that he had been residing in Detroit for the past two months.  At that time he said he was living in Chicago but he refused to divulge his local address.  He continued to telephonically contact this office on several occasions until June 1961.  He furnished information concerning Cuban nationals connected with the 26th of July Movement and on local persons connected with the FPCC.  He was last contacted by two agents of the Chicago Office on June 7, 1961, at which time he was told that this office did not desire his assistance.  Former CG___-S advised in August 1960, that Dean was a white male, age about 25 (in 1960), stocky build and black hair.  While Dean voluntarily furnished info to the Chicago Office over a period of nearly a year, he was never considered a PSI or informant by this Office.”  [Note:  The “CG” reference is to a Chicago security informant whose symbol code number was redacted.  PSI = Potential Security Informant.]

SA William J. McCauley to SAC LAX

McCauley advised SAC LAX about Chicago’s 9/19/62 reply to LAX request for brief summary about Dean (see serial #3).  McCauley closed his memo with recommendation that:  “In view of the information received from Chicago, it is recommended that this case be closed administratively.”  SAC LAX approved recommendation.

SA Supervisor Joseph O. Smith to SAC LAX

Smith reported a phone call he received from Paul Strobel of the West Covina CA Tribune.  Strobel advised that Harry Dean came to his office that day and declared that “he had been a former counterspy for the FBI in Chicago until May 1961” about FPCC and J26M and he “had used the code name of Junior with the office there.  Dean also reportedly stated that he had been instrumental in ‘killing’ the Cuban tractor deal.”

Strobel wanted to know if FBI-LAX was able to confirm or deny Harry’s story.

“Strobel was advised of the confidential nature of FBI files and was further advised that I was not able to be of assistance to him at this time.  He stated that since we were not able to confirm or deny Dean’s statement and since he felt the whole matter sounded like ‘fruitcake’ to him, he was not going to take any further notice of it.”

Hoover sent Chicago and LAX a copy of Harry Dean’s 11/19/63 .letter to J. Edgar Hoover.  Hoover stated “Bufiles contain no information indicating that this correspondent was considered an informant or a potential informant by your office.  Correspondent’s communication has not been acknowledged and you are instructed to furnish the Bureau and the LAX Office with a summary of the contacts this correspondent had with Agents of the Chicago Office in order that his statements may be evaluated.  Your recommendations as to how this matter should be handled should also be furnished.  The LAX Office will hold in abeyance any contact with correspondent until instructions are received from the Bureau.”

SAC Chicago to JEH

Chicago provided same summary of Harry’s background as previously sent to Los Angeles (serial #3) and it responded to allegations made by Harry in his letter to Hoover:

“It is recommended that Dean be contacted personally by agents of the LAX Division and that the facts regarding his contacts with the Chicago Division be clearly pointed out to him.  Of course, when Dean first contacted the Chicago Division in August 1960, he was not told this office was unaware the FPCC was being organized in Chicago.  Dean was not asked to continue in his position with the FPCC, and in view of the information developed by the Indianapolis Office in September 1960, regarding Dean’s background, no encouragement was given to Dean to continue his connection with the FPCC. Dean became associated with the FPCC in Chicago upon his own volition, as far as the Chicago Office knows, and although he occasionally furnished information telephonically regarding the FPCC to this office, his activities were never directed nor encouraged in any way.  It is felt the above should be made clear to Dean, and he should be admonished against making inaccurate statements regarding his past relationship with the FBI.”

JEH to SAC LAX

Based upon Chicago’s reply to Hoover’s inquiry (serial #8), JEH instructed LAX “to have Harry Dean contacted in the immediate future by two mature and experienced Agents.  He should be advised that he has never operated as an ‘undercover agent’ for the FBI and has never been authorized to represent this Bureau or act in any official capacity for it.  He should be advised that the FBI does not issue or deny clearances of any type and that his associations with the FPCC was upon his own volition.  It should be pointed out to him that the FBI did not encourage his association with that organization and he should be told that he should not claim any past relationship with this Bureau.  Results are to be furnished, under above caption, to reach the Bureau by 12-12-63,”

SAC LAX to JEH

LAX advised JEH that Harry had been contacted by SA’s Richard L. Cromwell and William J. McCauley at his residence of 18109 Atina Drive, La Puente CA on 12/10/63.

“Dean produced a receipt indicating he joined the FPCC in Chicago on 7/28/60, and was a member of the J26M in Chicago on 4/5/61.  He said he had connections, however, with the J26M as early as 1958, visited Cuba in June 1960, and on his return to Chicago had joined the FPCC at the instigation of one Juan Del Rosario and Joaquin Freire, then Cuban Consul in Chicago (since defected).  He said that shortly after he joined the FPCC and was elected secretary of the chapter in Chicago, he discovered he was associated with Communists and Trotskyites, and that about early August 1960 he contacted the FBI in Chicago.  He said he thereafter furnished information concerning the FPCC and J26M orally to the FBI in Chicago until about July 1961 when he moved with his family to California.  Dean said that he is fully aware that his association with the above organizations was initiated and continued on his own volition, that he had no intention of furnishing information to the FBI for money, but only out of patriotic interest.  He said that he has never considered himself as an undercover agent of the FBI, or as one authorized to represent or act for it in any official capacity, and that he has never intended claiming any such relationship with it.  He said that he was not so concerned over the fact his name appeared in the Senate Subcommittee report on the hearings of the FPCC in Chicago on July 13, 14, 1961, as that he was never called to testify as he feels he could have effectively exposed the whole matter from personal knowledge and helped to ruin the FPCC.  He added that it is possible he might some day be concerned with an employment clearance, but that he is presently suffering no jeopardy working as a plasterer out of the Plasters Local number 2 of Los Angeles.  It was explained to him that the Bureau neither issues nor denies clearances concerning anyone, that it would be the responsibility of the particular defense agency concerned.  Dean said he understood the policy.  It is understood that Dean is in possession of considerable literature of an anti-Communist nature.  Additional information relating to the FPCC and the J26M furnished by Dean will be made the subject of a separate communication.”

This serial summarizes the 16 items (correspondence, literature, flyers) which Dean gave to Agents Cromwell and McCauley such as letters to Harry from Dr. Juan A. Orta, Chief Director, Cuban Prime Minister’s Office and receipts showing Harry had paid dues to FPCC and to J26M; and notices about various FPCC and J26M meetings scheduled in Chicago in 1960 and 1961.

 This serial also summarizes how Harry accidentally met Edgar Swabeck at the Miami airport in June 1960 while en route to Cuba and their subsequent interrogation by Frank Vega (Cuban G-2 officer).

JEH to SAC LAX with copy to FBI-NYC

FBI HQ instructed FBI-LAX to submit a letterhead memorandum “setting forth background of subject together with results of interview concerning his trip to Cuba and his admitted membership and activities in the J26M and the FPCC.”  HQ also informs LAX that on basis of information which LAX sent to HQ on 1/28/64 (serial #11), HQ was unable to identify Frank Vega so LAX was instructed to provide separate memo on Vega and “reason Dean believes Vega to have been with Cuban G-2 and period Vega was reported to be in New York City. New York upon receipt of above data should initiate investigation in an attempt to determine Vega’s activities in the U.S. as well as his present whereabouts.”

LAX LHM regarding Frank Vega summarizes what Harry told LAX Agents during his 12/10/63 interview regarding meeting Edgar Swabeck at Miami airport and about subsequent interrogation by Frank Vega in Cuba.  LHM again itemizes the 16 documents provided to Agents by Harry during his 12/10/63 interview.  Harry was re-contacted by LAX-FBI on 3/13/64 and he provided some additional information concerning his trip to Cuba in June 1960.

“Dean said that he cannot be positive now, but that he believed Vega identified himself in effect as an officer of the Cuban G-2.  He said that he does recall Vega showing him some identification card bearing his photograph, possibly a green card, and that this fact, coupled with the nature and obvious purpose of Vega’s questioning, as well as the fact that he has since retained the impression that Vega was connected with the Cuban G-2, leads him to that belief.  He said that he recalls Vega had not appeared anxious to conceal his identity and that he is therefore fairly sure he had in fact identified himself with some credential; that at least if it was not as a representative of the Cuban G-2, it was in some comparable police capacity.”

FD-306 “Cover Sheet for Informant Report or Material” shows that the information was received by LAX SA Paul H. Chamberlain from a LAX Confidential Source (CSLA__S) with the symbol number redacted.  The attachment is a 22-page transcript of an interview of Harry on May 9, 1964 (starting at 10:30am) by an unspecified Police Department.

In this interview, Harry states that his full name is “Harry Dean” with no middle name.  He stated that the reason he left FPCC in Chicago was:

“Well, it really was rather unusual.  I just barely up and left.  There were some other things that made it impossible for me to stay any longer; however, they were on to me, you see.  They were aware of the fact that I was fingering them to the Justice Department people.”

“Q: Were you working for the Justice Department while you were a secretary?” [of FPCC]

A: “No, I’m not to say that. I volunteered information to the department of the Justice Department at all times.”

“Q: After you left, or while you were there?”

A:  No, all the time.  Right from the day they made me secretary, when I found this Communist junk in the FPCC, I passed it right on.”

“Q:  What attracted you to the FPCC in the first place?”

“A:  Really, nothing did. I was just involved in the – you know, interested in the Revolution when I came back from Cuba.  After a week or two, a couple of weeks, the American Communists sent me a letter, ‘Come on over, we’re organizing this to help Cuba, to help the Revolution’.  So I went over and said, ‘Well, it’s a good thing’. And that’s about it.  And, of course, they had me fill out a little card – what are your interests, etc., and I think within a week they had an organizational meeting and ‘We’ll make Harry the secretary of this Committee’. “

“Q:  Now, prior to your joining the FPCC, had you been connected with any other Communists or left-wing organizations?”

“A:  Yes, I had.”  [Harry then mentions Socialist Labor Party] “So, I don’t know if I’m officially a member of the Party, but I did hang around with them for probably a month…Then came the FPCC or the J26M demonstration, which I became involved in then, you see, in 1958.  After that, well, that was about it.”

“Q:  Did you report to any governmental agency while you were in the Socialist Labor Party?”

“A: No, no, I only hung around them about a month, and passed their literature, etc.”

Later, Harry answers a question regarding whether he was involved with any local people who had been involved in FPCC.  Harry told his interviewers about his meeting with Edgar Swabeck (aka Eddie) who supposedly told Harry that he was suspected of being a government agent.  Then Harry observed:

“And I guess I was really – I knew I was froze out by those people, and I still…hated their guts. I’ll tell you how it is. They double crossed me, they hurt my feelings, you might say, when they turned out to be a bunch of dirty traitors like they are, you see.  And, Eddie’s a dedicated Socialist Workers Party member, a Trotskyite, if you please.  And I just figured there might be something that I could get yet to pass on to the right people that I had been passing stuff on to for a long time. And, sure enough, something important did come up during that meeting, and now he’s not suspicious of me anymore, you see. And these people that I’m not supposed to mention, the Justice Department people, asked me to check into some other Latin American organization, which turned out to be nothing, and I was willing to go ahead with it even though I knew that they knew – were suspicious of me.  So I finally phoned them and said, well, I hadn’t better do it, my nerves are cracking up on me, I’d better pass this one.  They said O.K. and that was it.  However, I would say a year and a half later, something came up, I can’t recall. That had to do with this, and either I offered them more information that I had been trying to get to them in Chicago, you see, that I had in this briefcase, and they said, ‘Sure, bring it right in, or phone it in, or something’. I met them somewhere, I guess it was these people of the Justice Department. So I gave it to them and they said, ‘Well, this is terrific’ you see. It had to do with the FPCC bunch that, as you know, finally killed Mr. Kennedy and I thought it would be useful.”

During this interview, Harry stated that he had formed an organization called SLAM (Support Law Against Marxism).

When Harry was asked if he was familiar with the JURE movement (and JURE was spelled out for him), Harry said:  No, I haven’t heard of that one.”

“Q: Are you doing any work at all in the underground Cuban movement now?”

“A: No, I’m clear out of that. I don’t believe a soul would trust me after Snitzel and Fidel Castro and those people.  They won’t even talk to me…I tried to get involved, for example, I passed something – I tried to get involved with – oh, what the dickens is their name – ALPHA 66.  Then I got word through the conservative people that this was infiltrated, possibly Communist organization, so whether it was true or not I don’t know, but I passed it.  They were a bunch of nervous characters, anyway so I passed up on that one.  They were over here on Glendale Blvd., at the time, I believe.”

Harry Dean (as S.L.A.M, PO Box 264, La Puente CA) to “Chief Agent, FBI – Los Angeles”  [Text in ALL CAPS]

“In late September 1964, I met with FBI Agent ‘Rapp’ after receiving a telephone call the previous day.  The intent of that meeting which was held at approximately 10:30am in the vicinity of the ‘Huddle Restaurant’ in Covina CA, was to identify a photograph that could possible (sic) have been a G-2 secret agent of the Castro government whom I met in Havana in 1960 and who in 1960 or 1961 had been known to be in New York City at an address known by myself and then given to the FBI.  In 1961 the address had been procured from a Socialist Workers Party member, and member of the FPCC, also an associate of the Communist Party in the U.S. in this respect in Chicago IL and in Los Angeles CA.  His name was and is Edward Swaybeck (sic) whom I also knew in Cuba, Chicago, and in Los Angeles.  A great deal of time had past (sic), since my meeting with Castro agent Francisco Vega, but I am sure that the informal photograph shown me by FBI Agent ‘Rapp’ of the Pommona (sic) California office, was not that of the G-2 Castro agent, Francisco Vega.  It was my hope that Vega, an extremely (sic) sharp person of perfect English and Spanish language would be apprehended, as I know him to be a dangerous pro-Castro anti-American, especially if he had been and still remains in the United States. I am sure the Bureau is aware that several Castro agents are and still enter the U.S. via Mexico and other routes, using the documents of Puerto Ricans. I reported this fact to Agent Rapp at meeting also.  In 1962, I gave a report to your office approximately two months before several Castro Cubans were to do extensive espionage dammage (sic) in the U.S.  New York was the area as it happened later. I gave this report by phone using the name ‘status quo’ to avoid future difficulty. A check will show the details as described here, future time not known, will see recurrents (sic) of this, as present political conditions continue.  Cuba vs. U.S. ‘Vega type’ pro-Castro people lay these plans, not run of the mill type Cubans.”

At the bottom of this letter, LAX SA William McCauley (who handled Cuban matters for the LAX field office) hand-wrote the comment:

Is this fellow a mental case somewhere?  No acknowledgement needed.”

“Harry Dean telephonically contacted this office wanting to know if we were still investigating Larry Howard, Hall, or Edgar Swabeck.  Said he has furnished information to the FBI in Chicago and Los Angeles.  He stated that he was worried that these people would find out he had been furnishing information to the Federal government and then he would be in trouble.  He stated that he was very worried. He mentioned that he had talked to SA Rapp in the past.  Further made mention of his name coming up in a committee hearing but that he was not called to testify so he could clear himself in that he was only mixed up with these people so he could furnish the information to the Justice Department.  Above furnished for information only.”

Harry Dean letter (no date but refers to 12/5/64 conversation “this date”) Letter addressed as “Report to Los Angeles Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Harry Dean” [Text in ALL CAPS]

“I have spoken by phone with Lawrence Howard, this date Dec 5 1964.  In this telephone conversation I approached Howard as one who had been brought under suspicion by the authorities, because I had associated with him in 1963 in connection with anti-Castro activities.  As late as Sept 1964 your office according to the Warren Report of October 1964 was still investigating the possible connection of Loran Eugene Hall, Lawrence Howard, William Seymour ‘or Oswald’ according to the testimony of Mrs. Sylvia Odio an anti-Castro Cuban national, and member of J.U.R.E living in Dallas.  I have been associated with J.U.R.E. in L.A. also. In the phone conversation Howard stated to me that Hall was always a chronic liar, in every case, a person who talked to (sic) much, ‘a big mouth’, and that Hall had harmed the operations of several anti-Castro groups and Howard as well, that Hall since leaving the Castro forces in Cuba in 1959 had returned to the U.S. and became an opportunist, who wished to cash in on his past adventure, to become a ledgend (sic), at the expence (sic) of anyone and everyone.  Howard seemed to want me to see Hall in a bad light as Howard stated that Hall had said something unfavorable about me and had had me investigated by anti-Communist members.  He ask that I set up a meeting with Hall and he, that Howard might straiten (sic) Hall out, etc. I have no idea of Hall’s whereabouts and care not, as I told Howard. I had spoken to Guy Galbadon about two weeks ago, he is a friend of Howard and knows Hall. Hall at my suggestion became the Director of Galbadon’s political campaign in June 1964. Galbadon said later he was extremly (sic)  dissatisfied with Hall and had lost because of Hall’s lying during the campaign for Congress.  Two weeks ago as I reported by phone to the L.A. office of FBI, Galbadon said Howard would kill Hall, they hate him for more than lying?  Howard said he does know William Seymour and that he and Seymour were never at Mrs. Odio’s with or without Hall. He said he told the FBI this etc. recently.  I have stated to Mr. Rapp FBI Pomona office upon finding this information in Warren Report among other things that I first met Hall in 1963 late in the year. My entire interest in justice in all it’s (sic) aspects where I have been concerned in this case, and I base any of my thinking on law and order, and all it includes.  I could never support any philosophy wherein law does not exist. Here I draw the line in any cause, that you might understand my true thinking.  I do not wish to interfere, or project any supposition into this case. It is hoped that none of these mentioned are in any way connected with the horrible death of Mr. Kennedy as is my thinking by this time, I wish to clarify only my coincidental association with Hall, and Howard, as I first reported to Agent Rapp two weeks past.  These were not my choice of people in any case, but in my reports against Castro and communism, they were there and supposedly doing the same job?  Sincerely H. Dean” [Postscript: “I have also spoken with a member of J.U.R.E. and as much as he will say about Mrs. Odio is that she was ‘scared’.

LAX SA Ferd J. Rapp to SAC LAX

“Harry Dean, 18109 Atina Drive, La Puente, California, phone 964-5111, was interviewed at his request and in response to his telephone call to the Los Angeles Office.  He advised the following on 11/19/64:

He read a copy of the Warren Report and was particularly interested in a section concerning Oswalds ‘alleged association with various Mexican or Cuban individuals’. Testimony was set forth concerning information furnished by a Mrs. Silvia Odio who related that two Cuban underground figures had contacted her, accompanied by an American whom she believed to be Oswald.  It was determined that the two alleged Cubans were Lawrence Howard and Loran Eugene Hall.  Subsequent investigation determined that it was not Oswald who had accompanied them.  Dean stated that he had met Hall whom he knew as Lorenzo Hall who lived at one time at 877 West El Repetto, Monterey Park, California.  He heard Hall make an anti-Castro speech in Covina, in September 1963.  About this time he also met Lawrence Howard, Jr. who lived at 8325 Coral Lane, Pico Rivera California.  He has had no contact with either of these persons since the time of the assassination.  He did not hear either of them make any anti-Kennedy statements.  Notwithstanding the evidence to the contrary, he stated that it was interesting to speculate that it might have been Oswald actually with these two men in Dallas.  He speculated that both Hall and Howard who are anti-Castro leaders of the Cuban underground, actually wanted President Kennedy removed from the scene because of the failure of the 1960 Cuban invasion.  He stated that in his opinion Hall and Howard would be capable of entering into conspiracy with Oswald to commit the assassination. Dean stated that the possibility of Oswald’s presence with these Cuban leaders appeared feasible to him and he wanted the FBI to be aware of this possibility in the event that it had not been previously checked out.”

SAC LAX to JEH

Memo encloses photocopy of Harry’s letter to Joe Pyne program (serial #24) with copy to Chicago FBI.

“The letter from Dean was made available to SA Richard G. Douce on 12/17/64, by Executive Producer Bob Hayward of the Joe Pyne Show.  This show is an open discussion type program seen locally on Channel 11 each Saturday evening. Hayward said Dean claims he served an an ‘undercover agent’ for the FBI in Chicago, and wants to appear on the Pyne Show to tell about his role in developing information for the Bureau in the 26th of July Movement and the FPCC. Hayward said he is considering Dean as a potential guest on the 1/9/65 show, but would not use him if he is a fraud or if his appearance is not desired by the Bureau.”

“For the information of the Bureau, Dean is the subject of the case entitled ‘HARRY DEAN, IS-CUBA’ (Chicago file 100-38257).  Dean first contacted the Chicago Office in August, 1960, following his election as Recording Secretary, Chicago Chapter, FPCC, and furnished information about the leadership of the organization.  He was in periodic contact with the Chicago Office during December 1960 – June 1961, when he was told that the office did not desire his assistance. Dean furnished information voluntarily to the Chicago Office, but was never considered a PSI or an informant.  He is reportedly the subject of Identification Record FBI #4657880, and a former mental patient.”

“In November 1963, Dean wrote a letter to the Bureau about his ‘undercover agent’ relationship with the Chicago Office. At that time, Dean was interviewed, with Bureau authority, and instructed not to claim any past relationship with the FBI.  He was also told that he had never operated as an ‘undercover agent’ for the FBI, and had never been authorized to represent the Bureau or act in any official capacity.  It was also pointed out to him that his association with the FPCC was upon his own volition.”

“Dean has clearly disregarded previous instructions and is now seeking an appearance on television to further distort his relationship with the FBI.  It is suggested that Hayward be told that Dean has never been an ‘undercover agent’ or authorized to represent the Bureau in any official capacity.  Moreover, it is felt that Dean should be recontacted at LaPuente, California, and admonished about claiming an association with the FBI that did not in fact exist.”

Hoover instructs SAC LAX:  “You should immediately advise Bob Hayward that Dean has never been an ‘undercover agent’ for the FBI, nor has he ever been authorized to represent this Bureau or act in any official capacity for it.  You might discreetly indicate to Hayward that in view of Dean’s fabrication, which, of course, reflects unfavorably on his integrity, that he, Hayward, may not desire to have this individual on the ‘Joe Pyne Show’.  You are also instructed to have two mature and experienced Agents recontact Dean.  He should be told to desist making false claims concerning his relationship with the FBI.”

LAX SA L.R. Brandon FD-71 contact form re: 3/30/65 phone call (7:35pm) from Harry:

“Complainant advised that he was cooperative with the FBI in Chicago when he was a member of the Committee for Fair Play for Cuba a few years ago.  He stated that he fingered the group involved with this group and then sort of sneaked out of Chicago and came to Los Angeles.  Complainant advised that about one year ago he was contacted by Roland Barrio, 3704 Cypress, apt. 16, El Monte, California to help a group Barrio was connected with to accumulate arms to furnish to JURE forces who are interested in overthrowing Castro in Cuba.  He stated that he became connected with Barrio’s group which included a (first name unknown) Madralo, telephone AT 8-7950 and a Eddie Martinez, telephone 757-7921, and had made some contacts for this group to help them obtain arms for JURE.  Complainant advised that when he read about the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office raid and confiscation of arms from the arms company in Industry, CA last Friday, he had dropped by that arms company early this week and conferred with the manager of the company.  He learned from the manager that that company was manufacturing arms for JURE.  Complainant advised that this fact made him think that it was very off that this company was supplying arms to JURE and also Barrio’s group was also supposed to be supplying arms to JURE and yet they did not seem to be aware of each other’s presence in the same relative area, i.e. La Puente area.  Complainant advised that his led him to the suspicion that Barrio’s group is, contrary to what they profess, collecting arms for Castro’s forces to use here in the U.S.  Dean appears to be identical with the Harry J. Dean, subject of Los Angeles file 105-12933.”

Harry Dean letter (ALL CAPS) captioned “Note to FBI – Los Angeles Office”;

Mailing envelope addressed by Harry to: “Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Los Angeles, California.”

By October 1964 I learned via the Warren Report that J.U.R.E. had been both directly and indirectly involved before and after the assassination of President Kennedy. As I have previously reported some of these people were known to me prior to the assassination. They were Lawrence Howard, and Loran Eugene Hall also others.  My association with them was in respect to anti-Castro efforts.  (Mrs. Odio) as mentioned in Report of Warren Comm. Identified Hall, Howard, and Oswald etc.”

“The more recent and important is that J.U.R.E. has been mentioned in the weapons seizure in the City of Industry Calif.”

“JURE and I associated openly from about Jan. 1964 to recent date, that I was to purchase arms for them and give news releases etc.”

“The important detail is that J..U.R.E. people with whom I dealt from January 54 are not the same people as those involved in the Industry arms sizure (sic) altho it is stated the arms being made in Industry are for J.U.R.E. via the Costa Rican gov. My J.U.R.E. associates were having me arrange to purchase arms anywhere possible, arms of a specific caliber, and type that is, 9mm and N.A.T.O. I belive (sic) to be 762 caliber, also recoilless 57 type.  The 9mm was to be pistol and rifle type both. I made some contacts a few months ago saying the exact words as directed by the J.U.R.E. paymaster as to buying the arms required by them. They specified amounts of money they would pay for these weapons, and they had the money.”

“I suspition (sic) these are in fact two different groups. I am convinced my J.U.R.E. associates from what they say and do are Castro people to do revolucionary (sic) work in the United States when the time is right.  If I was sure they were not, I would not make this report, first given to your office about one month ago via phone to an Agent on night duty.  I cannot take the long chance with security of my country knowing what would be the outcome if these animals are Castro revoiucionaries (sic) as I do believe them to be.  If they are not, the mistake is my own at no cost to others in any way. Understanding Castro and his own I know they would try overt activity across the United States.  I believe further any weapons my associates get are not sent out of the U.S. but are to be used here as I have said. In any case. I will take no opposite to my true feelings where this case is concerned as the indication is to strong that these are Castro people.”

“Even with my desire to have Castro and his reds gone from our hemisphere I cannot chance a mistake that will help him and hurt our own people.  Therefore I pass to your office this information.  Harry Dean, 3-31-65.”

“An afterthought, while joking about at an informal meeting of myself and J.U.R.E. one evening last year, one Cuban took a picture of me, in pretending to work his camera they gave me the picture but I just realized they had taken others also which they kept.  Dean.”

“Complainant stated that he was going to mail the attached but since he was near the office thought he would bring it in.  Complainant then spoke briefly about the Cuban situation and about the Dominican Republic.”

Harry’s letter (typed in ALL CAPS) is captioned:

“Note to Federal Bureau of Investigation, Los Angeles Calif. Office, April 1, 1965”

“On March 1965 I made known via letter to you that date, about my suspicion of some former associates in the (organization J.U.R.E.) in this area, that I believed they were not in fact anti-Castro but rather pro-Communist, in some things they said and the way they operated etc.”

“Then the fact that they were not connected with the recent arms factory in the City of Industry, at the same time the people at the arms factory stated the arms they were making were for anti-Castro forces, via the government of Costa Rican while my associates were having me purchase or at least set up deals for arms of the type specified in previous note to your office as mentioned above.  I first called an Agent unknown to me at your L.A. office one evening in Feb. 65 and gave him the names of three of these people. I called again the end of March and gave him further information on the subject.”  (1) For the record the persons mentioned were Rolando Barrio employed Sears in El Monte, 3704 Cypress Ave., Apt. 16, GI-33342, (2) ‘Madrazo’ last name, believe works as engineer, lives Baldwin Pk area AT-87950. (3) Eddy Martinez, he is the main talker re-arms etc. It was for him that I was to purchase the arms, It was mostly his actions and words that made me think he was pro-Castro pro-Communist but others in the group also made several statements of similar nature etc.  His phone no. is 797-7921 and MA-77225 in Los Angeles. One no. is his place of employment”

“In view of the Castro Cuban uprising in Dominica it is possible Mr. Martinez was sending arms there as opposed to my guess of his purchases of weapons staying in the U.S. if indeed he is what I belive (sic) him to be. Mr. Martinez also stated to me re-the arms etc. that when we begin fighting we will kill everyone in the way to be sure no enemy escapes us. This is the direction of the Trotsky-ite type revolucionary as you know. That statement made me wonder more than any other although I pretended to agree to it.”

“Your office has no doubt checked out these details and now know the answers but I felt it was best to put it in type in any case.”

“Here are two names of Dominicans one whom I associated with in Chicago Illinois in 1961 at which time I was a member of the 26th of July Movement and with the FPCC.  These two J. Gill Rosario and Dr. Fco. Genoo represented ‘La Union Democratica Dominicana’. They agreed with the Cuban revolucion completely and spoke of the day when Dominica would be liberated etc.  I knew Dr. Fco. Genoo. I do not remember the other one but he was in attendance at a 26th meeting.  I posses (sic) the card announcing a reunion of the Genoo group. We were invited as fellow revolucionaries.  If you wish to have a copy of card I will be happy to forward same if it is of any use, He or some associates may be in the U.S. as yet.  The meeting they had was held at 2739 W. Division St. Chicago Ill. June 1961.  Sincerly (sic) Harry Dean.”

LAX Supervisor William J. Nolan to SAC LAX

“This memorandum will reflect that at 11:38am, 6/10/65 the writer, while handling lunch hour relief on the ASAC’s desk, received a telephone call from Bill Capps, ‘The La Puente Valley Journal’.  Mr. Caps advised that his paper is preparing a story which they hope to print by next Tuesday in connections with information furnished by Harry Dean of La Puente.  Dean, according to Mr. Capps, had advised them that he had been an informant of the FBI at Chicago in connections with the FPCC.  Mr. Capps was desirous of knowing whether or not this information could be verified either here, at Washington or Chicago, inasmuch as he understood that certain people had written to the Bureau concerning Marion Miller and the Bureau had verified that fact that she had furnished information to the FBI.  Mr. Capps at this time was informed we could not be of assistance to him at Los Angeles and that information of this nature would naturally have to come from our Washington HQ if Mr. Dean, in fact, had been an informant as he claimed.  Mr. Capps indicated that due to his short deadline, he would institute an immediate inquiry of FBI, Washington DC to ascertain this information.”

“A review of the files of this office reflect Bureau airtel dated 12/29/64 concerning Dean in which the Bureau instructed that television station KTTV, Channel 11, be advised that Dean had never been an undercover agent for the FBI nor had he ever been authorized to represent this Bureau or act in any official capacity for it.”

Onsgard, Jr. that Mr. Capps be recontacted and on an off the record basis be advised of this information in view of the prior Bureau feelings in this matter.  The writer contact Mr. Capps at 1pm of 6/10/65 and advised him that Dean had never been an undercover agent for the FBI nor has he ever been authorized to act in any official capacity for the FBI or to represent the FBI in any fashion.  Mr. Capps advised he realized this was off the record and expressed his appreciation to the Los Angeles Office for saving him fruitless correspondence.  He indicated that he had a few other calls to make concerning Dean, one of which was to the producer of the Joe Pyne Show inasmuch as Dean had indicated that he had appeared on that show.”

“It should be noted that under date of 12/31/64 the Executive Producer of the Joe Pyne Show was advised of the fact that Dean was never a representative of the FBI and that he had cancelled Dean’s appearance on the show and that if Mr. Capps should contact the producer, he will undoubtedly learn of this information.”

6/17/65 article in La Puente CA Valley Journal by Bill Capps, entitled “Valley Man Reveals Shocking FBI Undercover Story: Ex-Informant Tells Red Dealings

Article states that in March 1961, Harry using code name “Junior” contacted the FBI in Chicago to provide information and, at that time, Dean’s “undercover work for the FBI was nearly eight months old.”

Dean is quoted in article as stating that “About a week after he returned [from Cuban visit in June 1960], Dean joined the FPCC chapter in Chicago at the insistence of the Cuban Counsel, A week after that he began his work for the FBI.  The turning point for Dean ironically occurred at the same meeting of the Committee where he was elected Secretary.  ‘After the meeting’ Dean related, ‘Florence Criley (a Detroit labor leader), gave me a box contained what she said was our leaflet and flyer propaganda from Robert Tabor, a New York news-face. Communism in America was their title. I walked out of the meeting, my head buzzing with questions.  About a week later, John Rossen, an Illinois Communist, applied for a Fair Play charter in my name. It was then I called the FBI’ Dean said.”

“He found out from the FBI that FPCC was a Communist front organization. He offered to drop out and says he was told by a Chicago agent to ‘stay a while and tell us what goes on.’  For the next near, Dean says he attended Fair Play meetings and tipped the FBI to every move the front made in advance.”

“With regards to Bureau correspondence concerning Bill Capps and prior contacts by Capps with the writer, this is to record the fact that at 10:30am today, Mr. Capps telephonically contacted the writer and inquired as to whether or not the writer had received the second series of articles written by Capps on Harry Dean.  The writer advised him that as yet he had not, and Mr. Capps advised he would send them in immediately.”

“Mr. Capps inquired as to whether or not the writer wished to express an opinion on the articles that had been sent in, and the writer informed him that it was noted that the articles included the fact that Dean allegedly was an informant of the FBI, which facts have previously given to Mr. Capps to the effect that Dean was not an informant and had never been an informant.”

“Mr. Capps was not advised of the current letter received from the Bureau that instructs the publisher of the paper be contacted regarding the articles.”

“Re: Bureau airtel to Los Angeles dated 6/25/65”

“Thomas K. Vodrey, Publisher, ‘Valley Journal’, La Puente, California, was contacted by SA Ferd J. Rapp, Jr., on 6/29/65 and it was repeated to him that Harry Dean was never an ‘undercover agent’, was not authorized to represent this Bureau, and that contacts with him were unsolicited.”

“Vodrey advised that he had discussed this matter will Bill Capps, Staff Writer, and he believes that Capps views the term ‘undercover agent’ in a very broad sense in dramatizing the story.  He said he regretted that the article was written and said that he and members of his staff will be circumspect in future dealings with Harry Dean.  He also said that he talked by phone with Dean this date and Dean indicated he wanted to retract certain statements made to the newspaper.  Vodrey said he considered this action by Dean to be an indication of Dean’s unreliability.”

LAX SA William J. McCauley to SAC LAX re: Harry Dean

“Attached is a letter received from one William M. Hill, 1338 Greenberry Drive, La Puente, telephone 333-9961, dated 6/23/65, concerning the subject, which letter was addressed to this office and conveyed the writer’s desire to be of service to the FBI in connection with the subject.”

“Hill was contacted telephonically at his place of employment (in accordance with his request) on 6/29/65 and advised that it was not desired that he act in any way on behalf of this office in connection with the subject.  He said that he understood the situation particularly since learning through his wife that the subject’s wife is considering having the subject committed.  Hill said that he himself has been the editor of the ‘Legionnaire’, published by the American Legion’s West Covina Post #790, and can be relied upon to help in any way desired.  He said that it would not be necessary to acknowledge his letter by formal reply.”

“Recommendation: It is recommended that this memo be routed to SA Ferd Rapp for his information only.  It may be that Hill can be of some service to him in the future in some other matter.”

6/23/65 handwritten letter by William M. Hill addressed to “FBI – L.A.”

“Gentlemen:  The enclosed article concerns a couple (the Deans’) now known to my wife and self.”

“Several weeks ago, Dean’s wife, Millie, was employed by my wife’s employer, Leach Corp., San Marino, Calif., phone 799-0831,  Millie was in need of transportation and my wife has been driving her to and from work since she started.  I have had several conversations with Millie Dean in the interim, and upon meeting her husband (when he comes to pick her up in the evening at my home), the first thing he said to me ‘I hate all people—black, white, red, yellow and all’.  I replied ‘that’s a hell of a way to live’ and haven’t had anything to do with him since, figuring he was some kind of nut.”

“After reading, and thinking about the enclosed article, and being in a very good position to ‘cultivate’ a friendship with this person, I am wondering if there is some way it would be beneficial to your offices, and thus our country, to proceed with developing an association with this person.”

“Of course, if he is indeed an agent from your offices, then his hate attitude would be fake, and there would be no need for any service from me.  However, he strikes me as a nut and if he is active Communist, I will be proud to do whatever I can to aid in our fight against this evil.”

“No one knows of this letter, not even my wife Jean, and if there is something I can do, you may contact me at my employer – Rheem Corp., 3383 E. Gage, Huntington Park, Cal., phone LU-36671.  My home address is 1338 Greenberry Drive, La Puente, phone 333-9961 for 6 ½ years.   Sincerely William Hill.”

Copy of newspaper article referenced by William Hill (serial #46)

La Puente CA Valley Journal, 6/24/65, p A-1 and A-3: “Valleyite Tells Double Life” by Bill Capps.

Capps reports that after JFK’s murder, Harry was concerned that “local Minutemen might decide to take justice into their own hands.”  Dean is quoted as saying “I ran for cover. There are an awful lot of trigger-happy cats around. Including both sides of the fence.”

“What frightened Dean, and what still haunts him today, is that his name has never been cleared since his association with FPCC.”

Capps quotes Harry:  “I guess the FBI didn’t have any other choice.  But my name is still linked with the dirty Reds.  My name is still in that report with no asterisk to say I was with my country all the way.”

Capps then quotes Harry discussing the civil rights movement:

“There’s no doubt that Soviet Communism is trying to take over the civil rights movement and subvert it to Communism’s own ends.  The Communists are out to wreck that revolution just like they wrecked ours. I think the civil rights workers could get a lot more dignity out of their struggle if they’d kick the Communists out.  What you find in a lot of civil rights organizations are calm, cool, intellectual Communists actually running the demonstrations while these bearded kooks play along.  It’s the godless scum that lets the hell-raising and rioting take over the legitimate fight for equal rights in America.”

The final comment made by Harry as quoted by Capps in his article is:

When people find out something evil is happening, I urge them to contact their police department or the FBI.  Nothing is going to stop Communist aggression and influence in our own country except the voluntary efforts of a majority of Americans.  You’ve got to go to work with Communists and learn their methods to really know how much of a menace they are to your freedom.”

LAX SA Jerome E. Meinert to SAC LAX re Harry Dean

“On 8/18/65, Sergeant Gilbert Causley, Fullerton, California Police Department advised that an individual identifying himself as Harry Dean had come to the police department and said he was just visiting various police departments in the area.  Dean, in a general way, said that he believed that the riots in the Los Angeles area were Communist inspired.  By way of introducing himself and giving credit to his observations, Dean left with Sergeant Causley a copy of an article from the West Covina or La Puente Valley Journal dated 6/17/65.  In this article Dean is portrayed as an undercover agent for the FBI.”

“Sergeant Causley was informed that Dean is a ‘phony’ and was never an undercover agent for the FBI and is in no way a representative of the Bureau or operating with Bureau approval. Above submitted for information of the file.”

FD-71 contact form by SA F.J. Galloway (not dated but office serial stamp at bottom reflects 10/6/65) referring to 7:01pm phone call from Ray William Gardner re Harry

“”Complainant advised that he is in the public relations business and was just approached by Harry Dean to help him get a book or article written and published.  This writing would be about Dean’s activities in connections with the FPCC.  Gardner said that Dean allegedly was Secretary of this organization.  The article or book will concern Dean’s activities with the Committee and ‘the year he worked for the FBI in Chicago while a member of the Committee’. “

“Gardner said his purpose in calling was to find out if he actually should work for Dean and whether Dean was a member of the Committee.  He said that Dean already had an article in the La Puente Valley Journal about his activities dated 6/17/65.  It was captioned ‘Valley Man Reveals Shocking FBI Undercover Story’

“Gardner was advised that we could not tell him whether we had any information concerning Dean inasmuch as our records were confidential. He said that he understood this and added that he is willing to help the FBI in any way he can.”

SAC Boston to SAC LAX re Harry

“On July 8, 1965, Michael Kraus, 73 School Street, South Acton MA, employed as an optician at Itek Corporation, 10 Maguire Road, Lexington Mass., provided the following information:

“He was born January 3, 1939, in New York and in 1963 was living at 1839 Burkett Road, El Monte, Los Angeles County, Calif., at which time he was managing editor of the ‘El Monte Herald’.  In approximately April 1963, an individual by the name of Harry J. Dean, approximately thirty-five years of age, of La Puente, Los Angeles County, Calif., visited the newspaper office to inquire whether the paper would be interested in printing a series concerning his activities during the Cuban revolution.  Dean claimed to have just returned from Cuba where he had fought in support of Fidel Castro and had flown supplies to the Castro forces.  He further claimed to have originally become involved with pro-Castro activities while living in Chicago, Ill. – date not stated.  Kraus advised that he had told Dean that the paper, being a small town type newspaper, was not interested in printing such a series.”

“Shortly after this contact, Dean had asked Kraus if he, Kraus, would write a book about Dean’s activities and Kraus had stated that he would consider the matter.  Subsequently, in the latter part of May 1963, Kraus upon returning to his office one day found Photostats of printed material which had been left on his desk by Dean in conjunction with the writing of the above book.  Kraus stated he had merely glanced at the material at the time and put it in his desk.  During about the first or second week of June 1963, Dean again contacted Kraus and told him to forget the idea of preparing the book.  Kraus stated that as a result, he then gave no further thought to the above printed material.”

“According to Kraus, he remained in El Monte until November 1964 when he moved to Mass. to accept his employment with Itek. He stated he had just rediscovered the material furnished by Dean while checking over some of his papers and following a closer appraisal of the material felt it might be of interest to the FBI.”

“Kraus advised that Dean had never explained to him the significance of the material.  Kraus further advised that Dean in 1963 held a private pilot’s license in the La Puente area, was a plasterer and belonged to the plasterers’ union in El Monte.  He was married with children and originally came from the Chicago area where his parents were then residing.  Information relating to Dean’s activities appear in the Congressional Record according to Kraus.”

“The original 25 Photostats provided by Dean to Kraus, which for the most part, relate to Dean and the FPCC or the J26M in the Chicago and Detroit areas during the 1960-61 period, are being forwarded for the information of the Los Angeles Division.”

“For the information of Los Angeles, where individuals and/or areas covered by other field divisions are mentioned in the enclosed material, Xerox copies have been made and are being furnished to the appropriate offices, namely, Chicago, Detroit, Miami and New York.”

SAC LAX to JEH

“This is to advise that the Los Angeles Office was contacted on 10/5/65 by Ray William Gardner, 2417 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena CA, who identified himself as active in the public relations field and said he had just been approached by Harry Dean who asked for his help in writing and publishing a book or article dealing with his activities in the FPCC…Gardner said he wished to learn whether Dean actually was a member of the FPCC and whether he should work for Dean.  He was advised no information or advice could be furnished him in view of the confidential nature of FBI files…Los Angeles files disclosed Gardner telephonically contacted this Office on 4/25/64, when he identified himself as head of the ‘Christian Scientists To Combat Communism in the Christian Scientist Movement’ (CSCCCSM) which he himself had organized, and expressed his belief ‘evil people’ and a ‘hidden hand’ (repeated several times) with the Church were plotting to infiltrate his organization because of his activities.  He said he suspected a certain woman who was trying to befriend his mother.”

“On 4/28/65 the Los Angeles Office received from Gardner’s CSCCCSM (address same as his own) copies of literature issued by that organization reflecting his status as its ‘Director’ and indicating he corresponded with Dan Smoot in May 1963 and the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge in October 1963, in the latter case concerning his new organization.  Also enclosed was a copy of a letter from the Corresponding Secretary of the Christian Science Board of Directors to a certain resident of El Cerrito, California, dated 2/24/65 stating in part: ‘The circular which you enclosed, signed by Ray William Gardner, seems to be based on mainly misrepresentation as well as irresponsibility.  People who read inflammatory literature need to beware of exaggerated statements issued by misguided extremists.’ “

“Finally, on 10/19/65 Pat McGuiness, ABC News, Los Angeles, advised this Office that his wife, a reporter for the San Gabriel section of the Los Angeles Times newspaper, had interviewed Gardner on 10/18/65 when Gardner said he has taken an assignment as public relations man for a group of ‘intelligence officers operating out of New York’ of whom he knew the identity of only one, declining to disclose that.  The purpose of the group, he claimed, was to identify subversives in the anti-communist movement.  He said he might open an office in Burbank and is considering publishing a newsletter of the type issued by Robert Welch of the John Birch Society.  He mentioned he is no longer active in the CSCCCSM which he had organized ‘on assignment’ from a group of women he had met at a John Birch Society meeting.  McGuinness said he did not know if Gardner is a ‘nut’ or ‘out for a buck’ but felt that FBI should know about him.”

U.S. Senator George Murphy (CA) referral to FBI re: correspondence received from Harry Dean. Senator Murphy’s office forwarded a note to the FBI stating the following:

“In 1961, Mr. Dean claims he was a member of the FPCC (same as that which Oswald belonged to) and the purpose of his membership and holding office – that of Secretary in the Chicago chapter, was to keep the FBI informed of their activities.  He claims he was ‘dumped’ by the FBI in June of 1961 because of an investigation into his prior difficulties with the law and long list of debts.”

Murphy’s staff then refers to the 1961 reference to Harry in the Senate Subcommittee report about FPCC and observed that:

“He wishes to have this removed, on the basis that while associated with the FPCC, he did so only as an informer and this reference has harmed him from getting further jobs.”

Murphy’s office enclosed several documents which they received from Harry including:

·   6/28/61 Harry handwritten letter to JFK in which Harry states that:

“I have been the Secretary of the FPCC here in Chicago since July of last year, in order to inform the FBI of its activities, upon finding Communist books and material in the box containing fair play literature, given me the night I was elected, by other officers of the organization. When I called the FBI they said they did not know the committee was starting in Chicago yet, they ask me to stay in and pass on all information.  I did so gladly, recently they stated I have done a great one-man undercover job against the fair play communists.”

“Then after a meeting today with two agents, I was told I could no longer continue, as they had found out about my past difficulty with the law, but if I get my outstanding debts, which are many, straightened out, they would be able to consider using me again. They were very sorry that I could not continue they said. I am also very hurt about this outcome now, as here is a job I must do against the enemies of America.  I wish to ask if it is possible to gain from you a pardon, for my past mistakes? that I may continue in this urgent work. Most sincerly, Harry Dean.”

Harry also sent Sen. Murphy a photocopy of his May 1964 telephone bill in which he underlined calls which he made to Washington DC (to the office of U.S. Senator James O. Eastland, Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee of the Judiciary.

In his letter to Sen. Murphy (typed in ALL CAPS) Harry stated:

“In January 1964 I began to publish some of my old records, that I had saved from the time of my associations. I gave them to organizations, individuals,, and government officials. I did this along with continuing my anti-Castro efforts. It seemed to little avail, to clear my name, but certainly informed many interested as well as not so interested people in what the Communists had done to America along subversive lines and that of assassination.  In this effort a few people all across the nation were made aware of the plans of the enemies of America who work from within and without.”

[Note: at this point there is one sentence fragment through which Harry used asterisks to eliminate it.  That sentence fragment was:  “As a last effort to clear up the error in the misus (sic) of my true purpose to gather information for the Senate.”

Then Harry continued his letter to Murphy:

“In one last effort to clear my name in the Senate reports, I called Senator J.O. Eastland who was in charge of the Committee hearings.  He had me send him a telegram the next day, he then answered with a letter telling me that I would definately (sic) be given a chance to testify and clear the recorded error. The letter from the Senator will appear in this book, along with several other very rare and important documents to show my activities, such as letters from Castro’s office, membership book in the J26M, and the letter to J. Edgar Hoover of Nov. 19, 1963 along with other enlightening material of other efforts not herein written that were against the enemies of America (Pres. Kennedy’s assasins (sic) and accomplices.)”

“During anti-Castro activities in which I engaged in 1963 and 1964 I again met people who had not the true interest of liberty at heart in wanting to see Cuba free of tyrany (sic).  These people were obviously trying to get rid of Castro for the purpose of replacing him with their kind of exploitation, although few in number they were influential in leading positions of the counterrevolucionary activities. They were misguided in their critizism (sic) of President Kennedy’s failure to succeed in the invasion of Cuba, and for groundless purposes they imagined against him in the U.S. on internal policies.  But to be sure, President Kennedy’s fate was sealed on the bloody beaches of Giron at the Bayo de Cochinos, the Bay of Pigs, more so than for any other reasons facual (sic) or fancied.  I shall not here try to explain exactly what is the fact surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy, but I will say here enough that those who…”

[Note: at this point the letter stops – apparently a second page sent to Murphy was not forwarded to the FBI or was lost.]

Harry enclosed a copy of a 4/3/64 letter addressed to him by Senator Eastland which confirmed the phone conversation which Harry had with Eastland on 4/1/64.  Eastland told Harry he would “definitely be given an opportunity to testify” at the forthcoming hearings and “Meanwhile, I have asked that Mr. William Wheeler, West Coast representative for the House https://sites.google.com/site/xrt013/harrydeanUn-American Activities Committee, who also on occasion handles assignments for us as a matter of comity between the two Houses, be instructed to call upon you and interview you with respect to the full nature of your testimony.  You may rely upon the fact that any information you give him will be passed on to my committee.  Thanks for your cooperation and your offer to testify.  Sincerely, James O. Eastland, Chairman, Internal Security Subcommittee.”

LAX Supervisor Neal McGinnis to SAC LAX re Harry Dean

“This is to record that at 10:40am instant date, Mr. James R. Malley, Division 6, Bureau, called and furnished the following information.”

“He stated that the UPI on 11/26/66 in Dallas carried a story to the effect that flowers had been placed on the grave of Lee Harvey Oswald.  The SAC Dallas in contact with the newspapers in Dallas determined that these flowers were placed by a Harry J. Dean, Alhambra, California, who claimed to be a former agent of the FBI or undercover agent.  Presumably this information also appeared in the release.”

“President Johnson called from the Texas White House and inquired as to who this ‘FBI Agent’ was.”

“Malley stated that he was having an inquiry made of the florist in Dallas to determine who specifically ordered the flowers.”

“He instructed that the papers be reviewed out here to determine if such an article had appeared.”

“The writer recalls Dean as an individual who at one time was a source for the Chicago Office in the FPCC.  He was discontinued by the Chicago Office. From time to time he has made statements that he was an informant for the FBI.  This office on prior occasions on Bureau instructions (see serial 9) has contacted Dean and advised him that he has never been authorized to represent this Bureau in any official capacity.”

“Mr. Malley asked that the newspapers be reviewed and he called back this afternoon concerning whether an article did appear in the local papers re flowers being placed on Oswald’s grave and tying it in with Dean in Los Angeles.”

“A review of the file reflects that on 11/22/66 Dean called the office and asked that an agent contact him.  At this time he furnished his home address as 2013 South 9th Street, Alhambra, telephone 282-7530.  A case is currently being opened on Dean.  I informed Mr. Malley that the papers would be reviewed and he would be called back this afternoon.”

“ADDENDUM:  This is to record at 12:45pm Mr. Malley was contacted and advised that a review of the Los Angeles Times and the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner for 11/26/66 contained the following information:”

“Article on page 16, Los Angeles Times, bearing Fort Worth TX UPI dateline, reflected that hundreds filed past grave of Oswald.  Article also contained a neatly typed note reading, ‘Lee Harvey Oswald. Did he assassinate the President? Was he truthfully accused?  He has left all the world confused.’ “

“The Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, section A-5, 11/26/66, contain an article captioned, ‘Flowers For Oswald’s Grave, World Confused’.  This bore a Fort Worth, TX 11/26/66 UPI and carried the same information as the note mentioned above. Further, Oswald’s mother, Mrs. Marguerite Oswald, stated the flowers were put on her son’s grave Thursday, ‘by a former FBI man’

LAX SA Philip J. Reilly to SAC LAX re Harry Dean

“On 11/22/66 the above captioned individual called for Supervisor McGinnis and in his absence spoke with the writer. Dean opened the conversation by stating that he had been a member of the FPCC in 1960-1961 and later turned against the communist leadership in this movement and became actively engaged in anti-Castro organizational activity.  He implied that he had been informant of the Chicago Office of the FBI in supplying information regarding the activities of the FPCC.  Dean said he knew Larry Howard and Lorenzo Hall in the FPCC and indicated that Howard and Hall had travelled in Cuba with Lee Harvey Oswald (serial 23 of 105-12933 for previous Bureau interview on this point.)”

“Dean was rambling and disconnected in his narration and when asked for purpose of his call, he stated that he wanted to ‘clear his name’ and clarify his status with regard to his name being mentioned in the U.S. Senate Committee on the FPCC.”

“Dean was told that if he wished, an Agent familiar with these matters would contact him and he furnished his home address as 2013 South 7th St., Alhambra Calif., telephone 282-7530.  He stated that the number given was an answering service for Millie’s Cleaning and Janitorial Service.”

“A subsequent review of subject file on Harry Dean reflects that he has been interviewed by this Bureau on several occasions and has been advised that his false claim of having served as an informant of the FBI must be stopped.”

“In spite of Dean’s past behavior and inasmuch as a commitment was made to him that he would be contacted, it is recommended that an Agent familiar with Dean and his background contact him to establish whether or not he has any new information regarding Cuban activities or the persons mentioned in this memo.”

“Mr. W.R. Marshal, Newswriter, employed with the ‘Sherman Democrat”, Sherman, TX, telephone 892-4181, telephonically contacted the Los Angeles Office at 8:45am 12/3/66, Mr. Marshal furnished the following information.”

“He is trying to locate for interview purposes, one Harry Dean, a former FBI Special Agent, allegedly residing in Alhambra CA.  He has been unable to find a telephone listing for this individual and does not know his address.”

“By way of background, Mr. Marshall stated that he had previously written a story for Associated Press, which was also utilized on various Dallas television channels concerning Oswald at the Third Anniversary of Oswald’s death.”

“Recently someone left on Oswald’s grave, a vase of flowers, with an attached card.  The card contained a poem and was signed with the name of ‘Junior’.  Mr. Marshal contacted Mrs. Oswald, who informed him that Junior was the code name of a former FBI Agent named Harry Dean.  She indicated that Dean was an undercover agent for the FBI.  Mrs. Oswald further advised Marshal that she had recently received a registered letter from Dean in Alhambra, CA.”

“Mr. Marshal stated that he had heard through Channel 8 in Dallas, TX, that Dean had admitted sending the flowers and writing the poem mentioned above, but that he wanted to contact Dean personally about the matter.”

“Mr. Marshal was advised that we could not conduct any investigation to locate Dean for him and that we did not maintain any list of all former employees who might be residing or visiting in this area.”

“It was suggested that perhaps he could obtain his information through other sources such as private investigation or recontact with Mrs. Oswald.”

“Supervisor William Nolan and ASAC Arnold C. Larson were advised of the above information on 12/3/66.”

“Re: memo of SA Philip J. Reilly dated 11/25/66” [serial #55]

“Enquiry of occupants at 2011A, 2011B and 2017 South 9th Street, Alhambra by SA’s Henry J. Pratt and William J. McCauley on 12/6/66 disclosed 2013 is non-existent and Harry Dean is unknown to them.  A call placed to the telephone number furnished by Dean disclosed Dean’s residence address is 2013 South 7th Street, Alhambra.  Mrs. Dean advised that she operates ‘Millie’s Cleaning and Janitorial Service” from the residence, but that calls to it are received through a local answering service.”

“Harry Dean returned to his home from his brother’s residence nearby, and when asked what it was that he wanted to explain to the FBI, told SA’s Pratt and McCauley that his name appears in a report of the Senate’s Internal Security Sub-Committee on the FPCC. And that he wanted to make it clear for the benefit of his children’s futures (he has three children, ages 8, 7, and 4) that he is not a ‘red’ as the report would suggest but is in fact anti-communist.  He added that he has already explained this to Senator Eastland through correspondence, but that no publicity was given the fact he had been in contact with FBI in connection with information concerning the FPCC.  He said that in short he wanted to ‘get off the hook.’ “

“He was told that he was not ‘on the hook’ so far as the U.S. Government is concerned.  He added that in his effort to ‘clear his name’ he has been in contact with Knott (of Knott’s Berry Farm) foundation, but that it didn’t seem to have solved his problem.  It was explained to him that the consequences of his activities, whether or not the opposite of what he intended, were of no interest to the U.S. Government.  He said that he now understood that, and that he might have been better off if he himself had forgotten the past and done nothing tending to revive it.”

“Dean failed to mention the Oswald matter and it was not brought up by the SA’s interviewing him.”

FD-71 contact form of 2/22/67 regarding 1:18pm phone call from Charles Page of the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner re: subject Harry Dean.  “C” = Complainant [Charles Page]

“C. advised he had received a telephone call from subject who identified himself as a former undercover agent who had been involved with Lee Harvey Oswald in the FPCC.  Dean claimed to be in fear of his life because of the investigation taking place in New Orleans, and the suicide in that city of someone who apparently was under investigation.  He claimed to have contacted this office and had asked for protection, and been told the FBI did not provide protection.  Subject told C, for this reason he was going to start to carry a gun.”

LAX ASAC Arnold C. Larsen to SAC LAX re Harry Dean

“On 2/23/67 Val Clenard, KMPC News, telephone HO 9-5341, telephonically contacted this office concerning captioned individual.  He said he received a call from Dean who claimed that he testified before the House Committee on Un-American Activities and was very active in the past in the FPCC.  Dean supposedly runs a janitorial service called Milly’s in Alhambra CA.  Clenard wondered if we could furnish him any information concerning Dean.”

“He was advised that it view of the Departmental order that we are unable to be of assistance in this matter.”

JEH to SAC Chicago re: Assassination of President JFK (and copy to LAX)

“Enclosed for recipients is one copy of each of the following documents:

*CIA communication dated 4/4/67 classified ‘Secret’

*The attachments to the above-mentioned CIA letter, which consist of a letter from John S. Arvidson dated 3/21/67, a clipping from a magazine article and the face of the envelope in which Arvidson’s letter was mailed.”

“For the information of recipients, the photograph mentioned by Arvidson in his letter to CIA is the photograph identified as Commission Exhibit 237 which is printed on page 638 of Volume XVI of the ‘Hearings Before the President’s Commission on the Assassination of President Kennedy.’  The photograph is mentioned in the last two paragraphs on page 364 of the Report of the President’s Commission.  The individual depicted in the photograph has never been identified.”

“Bufiles contain numerous references to John S. Arvidson.  He has been active for a number of years in anti-communist groups, including the John Birch Society, the Minutemen and his own organization, American Veterans Against Communism.  Arvidson has been cooperative with our Los Angeles Office in furnishing information about Communist Front groups; however, he has declined to cooperate so far as furnishing information about so-called right-wing groups.”

“In view of the absence of specific identifying data concerning Harry Dean, Bufiles were reviewed only for references to him in Bufile 97-4196 (the FPCC).”

“New York report dated 10/5/60 prepared by SA James J. Conway in that case contains a reference to a Harry Dean on page 22.  This individual was listed as the Secretary of the FPCC in Chicago in August 1960.”

“Chicago review its files for all information on the Harry Dean who was formerly in the Chicago Chapter of the FPCC. Submit identifying data to Bureau together with photographs, if available.”

“Los Angeles review its files for information on Dean and photographs of him and submit results to Bureau.”

“If a photograph of Harry Dean exists, Bureau will compare the man depicted in Commission Exhibit 237.  This man was actually photographed while entering, as well as while departing, the Soviet Embassy, Mexico City, Mexico, and Bureau possesses several photographs made by CIA of him.  If Arvidson’s information is correct and the man turns out to be Harry Dean, further investigation of him is obviously warranted to determine why he visited the Soviet Embassy, Mexico City, in October 1963.”

“Review of Los Angeles files indicate the following:”

“Harry Dean mentioned in John S. Arvidson’s letter of 3/21/67 is Harry Dean aka Harry J. Dean, concerning whom there has been previous correspondence among the Bureau, Chicago and Los Angeles.  The Bureau’s attention is invited to correspondence captioned ‘Harry Dean, La Puente, California, Research (Correspondence and Tours’) in 1963; ‘Harry Dean, IS-Cuba” in 1964; ‘Harry Dean, La Puente, California, Research (Crime Records)’ in 1964 and 1965 (Bufile 62-109217); ‘Bill Capps, Staff Writer, Valley Journal, P. O. Box N, La Puente, California, Research (Correspondence and Tours)’ in 1965 (Bufile 62-109068; and most recently the Director’s reply dated 10/18/66 to Senator George Murphy’s communication dated 10/14/66 concerning Harry J. Dean, Box 254, La Puente, California.”

“Background information concerning Dean was furnished the Bureau in a letterhead memorandum dated 3/6/64 at Los Angeles, and subsequent communications under the above-listed captions.  He is also the subject of FBI identification record #4657880.  He was residing with his wife and children at 2013 South 7th Street, Alhambra, California, as of 12/6/66.  He is in effect employed by his wife, who operates ‘Millie’s Cleaning and Janitorial Service’ from their residence.”

“An effort will be made to obtain a photograph of Dean for comparison with CIA’s photograph of the man observed entering and departing the Soviet Embassy, Mexico City, in October, 1963.”

SAC LAX to JEH airtel re: Assassination of President JFK (with copy to Chicago)

“Re Los Angeles letter dated 5/1/67”

“A review of Los Angeles file and contacts with Agent who previously conducted inquiry concerning Harry Dean determined that the only photograph available in Los Angeles file is a membership card of the July 26th Movement bearing the name of Harry J. Dean.  This photograph was taken from file captioned ‘Harry Dean, IS-Cuba’ Los Angeles file 105-12933, Bufile 62-109217.”

“It was determined that an FBI identification record for Harry Jay Dean, FBI No. 4 657 880 shows that Dean was fingerprinted by the Detroit Police Department in January of 1955 and by the Detroit House of Correction, Plymouth, Michigan, in December 1956.  If enclosed photograph is not suitable, the Bureau may desire to have the Detroit Office obtain a photograph of Dean in connection with the fingerprints submitted by the Detroit Police Department and Detroit House of Correction.”

“The files of the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Office were checked with negative results regarding Dean.”

11/25/66 memo by Los Angeles Special Agent Philip J. Reilly re: 11/22/66 call by Harry
One of the more interesting aspects about this serial is that as late as November 1966 Harry felt it necessary to explain who he was as though nobody in the Los Angeles FBI office was familiar with him.  Also, this Agent described Harry's call as "rambling and disconnected in his narration" and when asked purpose of his call, Harry brought up (yet again) the 1961 Senate Subcommittee report on Fair Play For Cuba Committee which listed him as the Secretary of the Chicago chapter.  Harry stated "he wanted to 'clear his name' " --- but he had been told several times by the FBI (both in writing and verbally) that the Bureau did not issue clearances.  [See next serial (12/8/66) for details regarding subsequent in-person contact with Harry by Agents William McCauley and Henry J. Pratt.  And once again Harry brought up the matter of his name appearing in the 1961 Subcommittee report---as though Los Angeles Agents had no clue about his background.]

SECTION FIVE = Analysis

I have posted the following messages in Education Forum in response to Harry Dean's assertion that he has no memory problems with respect to the narrative he has presented in his own writings and through his collaboration with Paul Trejo in their eBook.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Since Harry raised this point, let me give a good example of why "eyewitness memory" is ALWAYS subject to extreme skepticism.
First, we need to go back to April 2012 and read Paul Trejo's message #145 -- copied below.    I will enter new comments after the end of Paul's message.
http://educationforu...nie1241&page=10
Posted 24 April 2012 - 07:22 AM
Harry Dean's statement about the JFK assassination is the most most direct witness that I know of by any living witness. By 1962, Harry Dean had successfully completed a mission for the FBI as an undercover agent investigating and reporting on Fidel Castro in Cuba. Now, in 1963, Harry Dean was on a mission for the FBI as an undercover agent investigating and reporting on the John Birch Society in Southern California. Here's how I read Harry Dean's witness:
(1) Some day in September, 1963 (Harry does not remember the exact day) in Southern California, Harry Dean attended a John Birch Society meeting along with Cuban Exile advocates Loran Hall and Lawrence Howard, former Marine hero Guy Gabaldon, Congressman John Rousselot, David Robbins, Eugene Bradley and former Major General Edwin A. Walker (resigned).
(2) In that meeting a great deal of money changed hands, from John Rousselot to Guy Gabaldon.
(3) Rousselot, the Southern California leader of the John Birch Society, was able to collect large amounts of money for secret political projects.
(4) Guy Gabaldon was selected as the leader of this current project. Gabaldon was originally from Southern California, but now he had his business offices in Mexico City. He had traveled north for this meeting. Gabaldon collected a lot of money for a special political project.
(5) Loran Hall (who virtually worshipped Guy Gabaldon) and Larry Howard (who always tagged along with Loran Hall) were selected to be Guy Gabaldon's foot soldiers.
(6) The special project was the assassination of JFK.
(7) At this particular meeting, the patsy for the plot was identified as Lee Harvey Oswald.
(8) Oswald was selected because he was a Communist who was easily manipulated.
(9) At this meeting evidence was produced that Oswald was a regional leader of his own FPCC organization in New Orleans, that his picture was in the papers to this effect, and radio recordings and TV recordings demonstrated clearly that Oswald was supporting Communism with every move he made.
(10) At the same time, the co-plotters in New Orleans had a firm control on Oswald, and could place him anywhere they liked, at any time they liked. General Walker was in continual contact with the co-plotters from Dallas. Oswald was completely under their control (either by blackmail or money, or both, or some other means).
(11) Guy Gabaldon collected funds in that meeting, to distribute partly to Loran Hall, partly to Lawrence Howard, and partly for Lee Harvey Oswald.
(12) Loran and Lawrence accompanied (or closely followed) Lee Harvey Oswald to Mexico. Mexico was the location in which Guy Gabaldon would deliver cash to Lee Harvey Oswald.
This is the extent of Harry's memoirs so far. (Harry, please correct me if I am substantially mistaken about one or more points above).
Although Harry reported all this to the FBI at the time, the FBI continues to deny any knowledge of Harry's 1963 reports. Also, since the time Harry first exposed this to the whole world (on the Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder) he has been confronted with a wall of skepticism
To explore this avenue of research more thoroughly, I think some patience is required on the part of researchers.
I have already contacted David Robbins and have confirmed parts of Harry's account: namely, that the Southern California John Birch Society definitely was led by John Rousselot, and Guy Gabaldon was certainly a frequent visitor, and Loran Hall was also a visitor, and so was Eugene Bradley. Robbins says he barely remembers Harry Dean. As we should expect, he denies any role in any plot to kill JFK. Aside from the critical meeting in question, most of the elements of Harry's account were confirmed by Robbins.
In my opinion, we should plead with Harry Dean to "develop the negatives" of his memories of that day. Quiet meditation and contemplation might be used to recollect the exact date and time -- which I believe will be useful.
Also, we should remember that Loran Hall told Jim Garrison many of these same events and named many of these same names in 1968 (which was after Harry Dean first began to report this, as I recall). So we have an independent record to begin verification.
However, in Paul’s eBook, there is a much different “memory” presented.
Harry discusses a meeting “in the final weekend of August 1963” during which Guy Galbadon allegedly told Harry a “secret”.  According to Harry, Galbadon asked Harry if he agreed that JFK was “a traitor” and Harry said “yes”.
But let’s let Harry speak with his own words.  I quote Harry’s “memory” as reflected in Paul’s eBook.  I bold and italicize what purports to be Harry’s words.
Galbadon asks Harry:
“We also agree that JFK is a traitor, right? I mean, he’s out there supporting the Communists in every move they make, and undermining patriotic Americans at home, right?
“That’s right,” I said, “It’s a fact.”
“We’re at war here, Harry. We don’t only have foreign enemies, we also have very real enemies right here at home. Right here in our own country. Are you with me?”
Of course,” I replied.
“So it’s our duty, the duty of all patriots, to destroy all these enemies of our great Republic, right? Just like Washington and Jefferson and all the great patriots who were willing to sacrifice everything for the good of their country, right?”
“Yes, I’m with you one hundred percent.”
At this point Gabby began what seemed to me to be a prepared speech. “Then I know that your thoughts are like mine today, Harry, and you realize that at any cost we must get rid of JFK as soon as possible. So here it is: we finally have a real opportunity to end the Communist takeover. It’s now within our grasp to finally destroy America’s enemies, including Castro, JFK and world Communism.”
“You’ve said something great here,” I acknowledged. “What’s our next move?”
“This comes from the highest levels, Harry. Welch, Walker and Rousselot have entrusted me with a mission, and I need your help. It’s now or never. Do or die.”
“You know you can count on me in, Gabby. Just tell me.”
At this point, Gabby tells Harry about “the plot” to make Oswald into a patsy for the murder of JFK in November. And Harry is then asked to accompany Gabby to a meeting in San Marino with Rousselot.  During this meeting, the amount of money required to carry out the “plot” was allegedly discussed and according to Harry, the $10,000 figure was mentioned for the first time.  Rousselot allegedly agreed to obtain the money in cash.
Now, let’s let Harry continue with his own words from the eBook but I am going to bold and underline one point which is CRUCIAL:
To the best of my recollection, it was on the following Saturday, 7 September 1963, that I again drove Gabby to Rousselot’s office in San Marino. He was deep in his thoughts, probably about the promised $10,000. The main thing I remembered from our brief conversation that morning was that Gabby strictly instructed me to never mention a word about this to anybody – not even to Larry or Loran or David or anybody else in the John Birch Society.
 “I’ll handle Larry and Loran,” said Gabby, “and I don’t want any loose lips around here. Got that? Nobody is allowed to speak about this mission without me being personally present.”
Naturally I understood – military conditions had long been my second nature. Yet, at the same time I noticed that Gabby was already feeling the pressure mount as one would expect for a captain with secret duties.
When we arrived at Rousselot’s office stayed in the car as Gabby went up to speak with the Congressman. After only about ten minutes Gabby returned with a big smile. I asked, “Did you get the full ten grand?” Gabby, clearly pleased with himself, smiled proudly as he confirmed: “Yes.” (I was suitably impressed because in 1963, adjusted for inflation, ten grand was one hundred grand in today’s dollars.)
SO…let’s now summarize what we can learn from all this
1.        During our debate in this thread, Paul has taken extreme exception to the idea that Harry ever described himself in any way which suggested that he was some sort of “agent” for any U.S. intelligence service.  Paul has repeatedly declared that I have maliciously INVENTED that accusation OR that other people who have described Harry as an “agent” must have relied upon false statements made by W.R. Morris.
2.        However, we see that in April 2012 Paul Trejo explicitly described Harry as an “agent” when he wrote (my bold type for emphasis):
By 1962, Harry Dean had successfully completed a mission for the FBI as an undercover agent investigating and reporting on Fidel Castro in Cuba. Now, in 1963, Harry Dean was on a mission for the FBI as an undercover agent investigating and reporting on the John Birch Society in Southern California
3.       Consequently, cannot we not be forgiven if we accept at face value what Paul himself has written regarding Harry’s status vis-à-vis the FBI?   Must we be subjected to constant calumny just because we believe the description which Paul has written as well as what Harry himself has said to many different people in many different contexts which also caused them to arrive at the EXACT SAME conclusion?
4.       In April 2012, Paul tells us that Harry DOES NOT remember the date in September when the Rousselot meeting took place.  But when the eBook was published a year later, Harry suddenly “remembers” that it was probably Saturday September 7th
5.     But now comes the biggest whopper of them all.  According to Paul Trejo (I bold type and underline key assertions:
"Some day in September, 1963 (Harry does not remember the exact day) in Southern California, Harry Dean attended a John Birch Society meeting along with Cuban Exile advocates Loran Hall and Lawrence Howard, former Marine hero Guy Gabaldon, Congressman John Rousselot, David Robbins, Eugene Bradley and former Major General Edwin A. Walker (resigned).  In that meeting a great deal of money changed hands, from John Rousselot to Guy Gabaldon."
6.     BUT ACCORDING TO HARRY:
When we arrived at Rousselot’s office I stayed in the car as Gabby went up to speak with the Congressman. After only about ten minutes Gabby returned with a big smile. I asked, “Did you get the full ten grand?” Gabby, clearly pleased with himself, smiled proudly as he confirmed: “Yes.” (I was suitably impressed because in 1963, adjusted for inflation, ten grand was one hundred grand in today’s dollars.)
In addition, Harry claims that "Gabby strictly instructed me to never mention a word about this to anybody – not even to Larry or Loran or David or anybody else in the John Birch Society"  -- referring to the $10,000 given by Rousselot to Gabby.   BUT, according to Paul Trejo, all those JBS people (including Harry) "ATTENDED" the very "meeting" where the money transfer took place---so they presumably already knew about it since they were witnesses!  Not sure why they needed to attend that "10-minute" meeting -- but that is Harry and Paul's story!
7.       Then, as Harry continues his “recollection” in the eBook version of his narrative, he mentions that “one day” [in September 1963], FBI Special Agent Wesley Grapp came by Harry’s home “for a visit”.  But we know that Grapp did not arrive in Los Angeles until March 2, 1964 and we also know from Wesley Swearingen that SAC’s did NOT perform field work [because their responsibilities were office administrative functions and external public relations duties.]
8.       And we know from Harry’s Los Angeles FBI file that there is no mention of any kind whatsoever about anybody meeting with Harry in September
In fact, Harry's Los Angeles file is totally DORMANT from April 1963 until November 1963 when Harry wrote his letter to J. Edgar Hoover.
AND GUESS WHAT!!!  In his letter to J. Edgar Hoover – Harry does not mention ONE WORD about the Birch Society, about his purported meeting with Galbadon and Rousselot or about the alleged subsequent meeting where $10,000 supposedly was picked up OR about his alleged meetings with Los Angeles SAC Wesley Grapp.
INSTEAD – the ENTIRE purpose of Harry’s 11/19/63 letter to Hoover was to ask for Hoover's assistance to “clear” his name by which Harry means that he wanted to somehow expunge the reference appearing in the Senate Subcommittee Report which described his participation in FPCC-Chicago three years before!  The most momentous event in modern U.S. history is about to occur in three days and Harry knows about it – BUT all Harry is concerned about as of 11/19/63 is the ONE reference to his name in an obscure Senate Report which nobody even knows about!
THAT is the story and quality of evidence which Paul Trejo and Harry want us to believe!
==================================================================================
The following message was posted on page 61 of the Education Forum thread captioned "New Book" in October 2015:
Re: the alleged September 1963 meeting at JBS HQ in San Marino CA which Harry claims he attended along with Maj. General Edwin A. Walker, John Rousselot, and other Birch Society members.
Briefly, here is why Harry's story is so suspect:
1.   Harry wrote a letter to J. Edgar Hoover dated 11/19/63.  According to Harry's story, he was aware of a major JBS plot to murder JFK but we are expected to believe that Harry did not think it was important to mention a single word about it to Hoover.
2.   Furthermore, Harry does not even think it relevant to mention to Hoover (in that letter) that he (Harry) was in routine contact with the supposed SAC of the Los Angeles field office (Wesley Grapp) starting in August or September of 1963.  [Incidentally, Grapp was not SAC in Los Angeles until March 1964.  In 1963 he was SAC in Miami FL]
3.   AFTER the assassination of JFK, Harry wrote to, or telephoned, or was interviewed by Agents of the Los Angeles FBI office on several occasions.  The specific dates: December 16, 1963, October 3, 1964, November 30, 1964 and December 9, 1964.
In addition, on May 9, 1964, Harry was interviewed at length by an un-named southern California Police Department. The transcript of that interview is 22-pages of single-spaced typewritten text.
In NONE of those communications with the FBI, or with the southern California Police Department, did Harry mention his alleged association with Grapp, nor did he mention the JBS nor did he mention any "plot" (by the JBS) to murder JFK.
4.  According to Paul Trejo's eBook narrative:  During September 1963, Harry says that he met with Guy Galbadon at his El Monte home.  During some of those meetings, Loran Hall, Larry Howard, or David Robbins were also present.
Harry described Loran Hall as "a leader in the fight against the international Communist conspiracy which was currently headed, as he saw it, by Fidel Castro and John F. Kennedy."
Harry further opined:  "This was my core team.  I watched them like a hawk"   AND  "When nobody else was around Gabby would talk to me about the roles Loran and Larry would play in [Maj. General Edwin A.] Walker's plan."
5.  However:  when Harry was interviewed (at his request) by FBI-Los Angeles Agent Ferd Rapp Jr. on 11/19/64, Harry told Rapp that:  "He did not hear either of them [Loran Hall or Larry Howard] make any anti-Kennedy statements."
During that same interview, Harry told Special Agent Ferd Rapp Jr. that Loran Hall and Lawrence Howard "would be capable of entering into conspiracy with Oswald to commit the assassination. Dean stated that the possibility of Oswald's presence with the Cuban leaders appeared feasible to him and he wanted the FBI to be aware of this possibility in the event that it had not been previously checked out."  [Los Angeles FBI file 105-12933, serial #23.]
6.  Does anyone notice all of the anomalies here?
(1)  During September 1963, Harry claims that Loran Hall described JFK as a leader of "the international Communist conspiracy" but in November 1964 Harry claims he never heard Loran Hall make any anti-JFK statements!   BUT...Loran Hall (and Larry Howard) "would be capable of entering into conspiracy with Oswald to commit the assassination."
Why would that be the case if Harry never heard them make any anti-JFK statements?
(2)  In November 1964, Harry is wondering if the FBI might never have "previously checked out" the possibility of Loran Hall's and Lawrence Howard's involvement in the assassination!
Huh?   Harry claims he told the FBI in Los Angeles about Hall's and Howard's involvement in the "JBS plot" in the summer of 1963 -- so why would Harry think in November 1964 that the FBI was not aware of them or their alleged involvement?
(3)   Harry claims that, by September 1963, he has direct personal knowledge of a murder plot against the President of the United States and he even knows the specific names of the key conspirators (who were JBS members) -- but he does not mention a single word about the alleged plot to anybody .....
(3.1) through his correspondence to the FBI in Los Angeles
(3.2) through his lengthy letter to J. Edgar Hoover, three days before the assassination
(3.3) through personal interviews conducted with Harry by the Los Angeles FBI which are memorialized in his file
(3.4) through his extensive interview by a southern California Police Department or
(3.5) through his phone conversations with various FBI Special Agents
Do you really think this is plausible behavior for someone who claims that he had personal knowledge about the most momentous event in our country's history during that time period?
Harry Dean message on Education Forum, 9/1/16:
http://educationforum.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/22106-new-book/&page=90
"Lazar reported that my Chicago FBI informant records have been destroyed? Is it possible Los Angeles has done likewise? Bureau has exposed everything otherwise to deny and shoot down my connection with them only after I abruptly quit that fearful existence in 1965. What else can be expected, they still run the show."
MY REPLY
Harry – that is not entirely accurate.
1. In January 1980, pursuant to Federal Judge Harry Greene’s court-order, the National Archivist of the United States initiated an almost 2-year appraisal of FBI records. Their final report was released in November 1981. It was reviewed and approved by the Assistant Archivist for NARA and the Archivist for the Federal Records Centers.
2. The appraisal determined that the FBI had approximately 25 million case files. Various methods were used to determine what should happen to those files. FBI HQ and field office files with historical value were to be saved and ultimately transferred to NARA. The disposition of all other files was dependent upon evaluation of their content.
It should be noted that many HQ and field office “files” are very small – sometimes only 20-50 pages (or less) and HQ files routinely would duplicate all information contained in the field office file. In fact, many HQ files repeat, verbatim, and word-for-word and line-by-line, the preliminary report sent to HQ by field offices. In other words, FBI HQ clerical staff just re-typed the field office report into a HQ memo or report.
3. Obviously, nobody has the resources to evaluate 25 million case files in a few months or even a few years – but the process of determining what should happen to all those files began in 1982.
4. Harry’s Chicago field file was destroyed in May 1990. Neither Harry nor anybody else (with Harry’s permission) bothered to request it through FOIA. However, we do know what was contained in that file because on November 19, 1963, Harry sent a letter to J. Edgar Hoover in which he claimed to have been an undercover agent for the FBI in Chicago.
FBI HQ checked its records (HQ and field offices both maintain an Index to all of their current and former informants and confidential sources but HQ could not find any reference to Harry) – so, on November 22, 1963, Hoover sent a copy of Harry’s letter to both the Los Angeles and Chicago field offices.
Hoover instructed Chicago field to provide a summary to HQ and to Los Angeles (by 11/27/63) regarding what Chicago knew about Harry and, particularly, a summary of any contacts which Harry had with Chicago Agents. Hoover told Los Angeles that no reply would be sent to Harry until after Chicago replied so that Harry’s statements in his 11/63 letter to Hoover could be evaluated.
5. Chicago field replied to HQ on November 26, 1963. A copy of their summary memo is in Harry’s HQ file (as serial #2). As we now know, Chicago told HQ that Harry had originally contacted the FBI-Chicago office in August 1960 by phone without divulging his name. In a subsequent phone call in August, Harry told the FBI his name and his address in Whiting, Indiana. A confidential informant had told the FBI that Harry was a dues-paying member of the FPCC.
Chicago then told HQ that the FBI’s Indianapolis office made an inquiry about Harry to the Whiting Indiana Police Department. The Whiting PD Detective who responded stated that they had an active warrant for Harry’s arrest on bad check charges. The Whiting PD also acquired an identification record from the Detroit Police Department which revealed that when Harry lived in Canada in 1948, he had been committed as a mental patient and he had a criminal record in Canada for breaking and entering as well as three Detroit PD arrests on various charges.
6. In December 1960, Harry called Chicago-FBI again to report that he had resided in Detroit for the previous 2 months but he was now in Chicago again. However he did not want to reveal his local address. Harry then called FBI-Chicago several more times until June 1961.
7. It is very important to understand that every time Harry contacted Chicago-FBI, HE decided to initiate those contacts. HE decided what information he wanted to bring to their attention. The FBI did not solicit his contacts nor did they solicit any information from him.
8. Chicago concluded its summary memo by pointing out that on June 7, 1961, two Chicago Agents contacted Harry, at which time he was told that this office did not desire his assistance.
This is confirmed by Harry in his November 1963 letter to Hoover.
Harry told Hoover that he had used only the “telephone method in all my dealings with Agents, only near the end of my activities (not anticipated) did I meet with them…”  Harry confirmed that the FBI had investigated his background and shortly before the July 1961 U.S. Senate hearings into FPCC, “I was told to quite [sic] giving information to the FBI by two Agents whom I met on Chicago’s north side in a street corner meeting pre-arranged of course, they made it clear that I was finished by reason of their findings concerning my past…”
9. FBI-Chicago then told HQ that all of this information “was furnished the Los Angeles Division by letter dated September 19, 1962.”
10. So—we have a complete record of what transpired between Harry and Chicago FBI and we have the confirming contemporaneous copy of Chicago’s 9/19/62 memo to Los Angeles field file (serial #3 in Harry’s Los Angeles file 105-12933)
SUMMARY:
The reason why Harry’s Chicago field file was destroyed can be surmised from examples where researchers (including me) have copies of FBI field office files which were later destroyed.
In short: the field file did not contain any significant information that had not already been sent to HQ and (often) to other field offices.
In his message above, Harry refers to his informant records – but we know with absolute certainty that Harry was never an FBI informant.
We know this for several reasons:
1. Harry was never assigned an informant symbol. Genuine informants are ALWAYS assigned a symbol to protect their identity.
2. ALL information which Harry provided to the FBI (by phone, by mail, or in person) was NOT recorded on the standard form used by all FBI Agents when they summarized their contacts with informants. Instead, ALL Harry’s information was recorded on the FBI’s general intake form (FD-71) also known as “Complaint Form”.
3. Genuine FBI informants were assigned a specific Case Agent (and sometimes one backup). However, when you review Harry’s contacts with the FBI, all of his contacts were random – i.e. Harry spoke to whomever was the on-call duty officer for incoming phone calls.
4. Genuine FBI informants had to report to their Case Agent on a regular schedule (usually once every 2 weeks at a minimum). Harry never had any sort of schedule. He just willy-nilly picked up the phone, or sent a letter, or showed up in person whenever HE felt like contacting the FBI.
5. Almost all of Harry’s “information” was just filed away and not acted upon in any way.
6. When you review the files which should contain memos which summarize information which Harry claims he provided to the FBI -- there are not only no references to that information, there are not even any references to Harry's file numbers (as the originating source for that information). If you check genuine informant files, there are ALWAYS cross-references indicated, i.e. files where the informant's info has been channeled.
7. Incidentally, as a result of an FOIA lawsuit which I have previously mentioned, Harry's HQ and Los Angeles files were released approx. 30 years ago with almost no redaction of very private and personal information regarding Harry -- including his arrest records aka rap sheet (which the U.S. Supreme Court stated should not be released on a living person) without their consent.
The identities of genuine living FBI informants and confidential sources are always protected unless they are already known due to court or legislative committee testimony which is public knowledge.
There are specific exemptions normally applied for "law enforcement records" and records which might reveal the identity of a confidential source.
The reason why Harry's name (and very personal information) was NOT redacted 30 years ago is precisely because he was never an FBI informant or confidential source and he initiated a self-promoting public relations campaign in the 1960's where he made false statements about himself and the FBI---so there was nothing for the FBI to protect!
There are many other ways to confirm that Harry was never an “informant” or “undercover agent” or “confidential source” or "political spy" – EVEN IF you do not want to believe the explicit statements by the FBI in their memos stating that his information was never solicited and he was never an informant
Dean contacted FBI SA McCauley and reported that he had been an FBI informant for Chicago field office re: FPCC.
Dean told Agent McCauley “that largely because his wife had become very upset over his activities on behalf of the FBI, he had discontinued his informant activities and had come to the Los Angeles area about one year ago, and is now employed as a plasterer operating out of the Union Office on Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles.”
He added that he has, since his arrival in Los Angeles, had casual contact with Edgar and Marjorie Swabeck, whom he had previously known in the Chicago area, and from them has learned that Marjorie Swabeck is secretary of the Los Angeles chapter of FPCC at the present time.  He said that he otherwise has taken no particular interest in the FPCC, and that while he himself is personally not averse to resuming informant activities in behalf of the FBI, he hesitates to do so because of his wife’s feeling in the matter.”
Dean’s letter to J. Edgar Hoover acknowledges his past “mistakes I had made in my younger days” which he described as “my shady character”.  Harry told Hoover that FBI Agents in Chicago “were my kind of people” and “patriots” who were “dedicated to the same principles as are we.” but they told Harry that “I could no longer continue as an undercover agent” because “I was finished by reason of their findings concerning my past...”
Harry asked Hoover for assistance “with the hope of being cleared” because his name appeared as an officer of “the red front” in a U.S. Senate Subcommittee Report on the FPCC.
Two FBI-Los Angeles Agents contacted Dean at his residence (18109, Atina Drive, La Puente CA) per instructions from FBI HQ.  During this contact, Dean produced a receipt showing that he joined FPCC-Chicago on 7/28/60 and he was also a member of J26M from 1958 forward.
Dean mentioned his trip to Cuba in June 1960 and that he joined FPCC upon his return to Chicago at the instigation of Juan del Rosario and Joaquin Freire.  Dean acknowledged to the Agents that his association with FPCC and J26M was initiated and continued on his own volition and he recognized that he was never an undercover agent for the FBI nor authorized to represent or act for the FBI in any capacity.  Dean was informed that the FBI did not issue clearances.
Dean gave the FBI-Los Angeles Agents 16 items of correspondence and literature concerning his past activities”
Harry was re-contacted by FBI-Los Angeles concerning his June 1960 trip to Cuba and, in particular, Harry was asked about Frank Vega.  During this conversation, Harry told the FBI-Los Angeles Agents that he cannot be positive now, but that he believed VEGA identified himself in effect as an officer of the Cuban G-2.”
Harry also mentioned that when he visited Edgar Swabeck in either Chicago or Los Angeles in the fall of 1961, he “observed a letter from Vega bearing his name and return address in New York City.”
LAX-16
1964-October 3
M
Harry sent typed letter in envelope addressed to “Chief Agent, FBI, 1340 W. Sixth Street, Los Angeles” in which he stated that he met Special Agent Ferd Rapp “in late September 1964…after receiving a telephone call the previous day…”
Harry stated that the meeting with Rapp was in Covina CA near the Huddle restaurant and the purpose of that meeting was for Harry to identify a photo of a possible Cuban G-2 agent “whom I met in Havana in 1960…”
Harry declared that “In 1962, I gave a report to your office approximately two months before several Castro Cubans were to do extensive espionage damage in the U.S.  New York was the area as it happened later.  I gave this report by phone using the name “status quo” to avoid future difficulty.”
The Los Angeles Agent in charge of Cuban matters in southern California [William J. McCauley] hand-wrote the following comment on Harry’s letter:  “Is this fellow a mental case somewhere? No acknowledgement needed.”
LAX-19
1964-November 19
P?
Special Agent Ferd Rapp stated that Harry “was interviewed at his request and in response to his telephone call to the Los Angeles office.”
Harry told Rapp that he read the Warren Report’s comments about Oswald’s “alleged association with various Mexican or Cuban individuals”.  Specifically, Harry mentioned testimony by Sylvia Odio re: Lawrence Howard and Loran Eugene Hall.
Harry told Rapp that he had met Hall (Monterey Park CA) and had heard him make an anti-Castro speech in Covina CA in September 1963. Harry also met Lawrence Hall Jr. (Pico Rivera CA) about this time but Harry stated he “had no contact with either of these persons since the time of the assassination” and he has not heard “either of them make any anti-Kennedy statements.”
Harry stated that it “was interesting to speculate that it might have been Oswald actually with these two men in Dallas” and that “both Hall and Howard who are anti-Castro leaders of the Cuban underground, actually wanted President Kennedy removed from the scene because of the failure of the 1960 Cuban invasion.”
Harry told Rapp that “in his opinion Hall and Howard would be capable of entering into conspiracy with Oswald to commit the assassination” and the FBI might want to check out that possibility.
LAX-23
1964-November 21
P
Los Angeles Special Agent John P. Andrews answered phone call from Harry at 5:40pm during which Harry claimed past assistance to government re: Cuban matters. Agent Andrews characterized Harry’s call as “incoherent”.
Harry stated that Guy Galbadon had called Harry to state that Larry Howard “would kill Lorenzo Hall, if and when he can locate him. Dean did not want to repeat previous info furnished. He also claims own life may be in jeopardy, details not furnished.”  The “Action Recommended” notation on FBI contact form is “File”
LAX-20
1964-November 30
P
Harry phoned Los Angeles FBI office and spoke with Agent Thomas F. Gearty.
Harry wanted to know if the Los Angeles office was “still investigating Larry Howard, Hall or Edgar Swabeck.  Said he furnished information to the FBI in Chicago and Los Angeles.”
Harry observed that he was “worried that these people would find out he had been furnishing information to the Federal Government and then he would be in trouble…He mentioned that he had talked to SA Rapp in the past.”  Agent Gearty marked his memo re: Harry’s call: “Above furnished for information only.”
LAX-21
1964-December 5
M
Harry sent letter to FBI-Los Angeles regarding his conversation with Larry Howard. Harry referred to Warren Commission report comments re: Loran Hall, Lawrence Howard, William Seymour, and Sylvia Odio.  Harry also mentioned his “association with J.U.R.E. in Los Angeles”.
Harry described “my coincidental association with Hall, and Howard, as I first reported to Agent Rapp near two weeks past.”
LAX-22
1964-December 10
M
Harry sent letter to “The Director, The Joe Pyne Show, Channel 11 KTTV, Hollywood 28 Calif.” - a copy of which was given to FBI Agent Richard G. Douce by Pyne program Executive Producer Bob Hayward
In his letter, Harry summarized details about his background which he had discussed over the phone with the Pyne program Director that same day.
Among the activities listed by Harry were his assistance to “Castro Cubans in Chicago Illinois, with money, arms, late 1957” and in 1959 more help with money and then joined meetings of J26M and met with Cuban counsel in Chicago.  In 1960, Harry engaged in more activities and Harry said the J26M asked him to visit Cuba.
When he returned to U.S. from Cuba he was “soon recruited into Fair Play For Cuba Committee beginning to organize in Chicago” and he was “elected Secretary at second meeting because I was such a loud supporter of Castro.”
During his FPCC work, he was “assigned propaganda work” but he soon became “disillusioned” and he “ask Fedral (sic) Bureau re some of these people. They ask if I would pass info to them after discution (sic), was happy to do so were (sic) FPCC was concerned, then found many Cuban friends like and took orders from local Communists, I turned against them but stayed on onside to gain info. on all activities, was successful, as later hearings show by U.S. Senate Sub-Committee of 1961 June.”
Harry also stated that he moved to Detroit and “joined newly forming FPCC, got lowdown on them, gave to Fed” and “FBI said best one man undercover informate (sic) job seen, was great reward to me, to work against enemies of America.”
LAX-24
1965-March 30
P
Harry called FBI-Los Angeles and spoke with Special Agent L.R. Brandon at 7:35pm.  Harry told Brandon about being “cooperative with the FBI in Chicago when he was a member of the Committee for Fair Play in Cuba a few years ago.  He stated that he fingered the group involved with this group and then sort of sneaked out of Chicago and came to Los Angeles.”
Then Harry mentioned someone who contacted him (Roland Barrio of El Monte CA) whom Harry stated was interested in obtaining arms for “JURE forces who are interested in overthrowing Castro in Cuba.”  Harry “stated that he became connected with Barrio’s group…and had made some contacts for this group to help them obtain arms for JURE.”
Harry expressed his “suspicion that Barrio’s group is, contrary to what they profess, collecting arms for Castro’s forces to use here in the U.S.”
LAX-29
1965-March 31
L
Harry sent a letter addressed to “Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation” in Los Angeles (but not addressed to any specific person) in which he stated that “By October 1963, I learned via the Warren Report that J.U.R.E. had been both directly and indirectly involved before and after the assassination of President Kennedy.  As I have previously reported some of these people were known to me prior to the assassination.  They were Lawrence Howard, and Loran Eugene Hall, also others.  My association with them was in respect to anti-Castro efforts.”
Harry then mentioned a recent weapons seizure in the City of Industry CA which reportedly had JURE connections but Harry told the FBI that the JURE persons “with whom I dealt from Jan. 64 are not the same people as those involved in the Industry arms sizure (sic) altho it is stated the arms being made in Industry are for JURE via the Costa Rican gov.”
Harry declared that his JURE associates “are Castro people to do revolucionary work in the U.S. when the time is right” and Harry referred to his previous report, “first given to your office about one month ago via phone to an Agent on night duty…”
LAX-30
1965-April 3
P
Harry called the L.A. FBI office and spoke to Agent J. Flynn Jr.  The contact form reports that Harry “advised in a recent call to office he furnished info re Eddie Martinez. He has remembered that Martinez once asked him if he thought he could get weapons through the ‘Minutemen’. Also thought Martinez was trying to determine if he knew anything about that outfit.”
Flynn hand-wrote on contact form: “File for record of call.”
LAX-31
1965-May 2
P
Harry called FBI-Los Angeles and spoke with Agent Jerry Moore at 3:30pm regarding the organization La Union Democratica Dominica and J. Gil Rosario and Dr. Francisco Genoo.
Harry stated that he tried to contact Agent Ferd Rapp in Ontario CA but his office was closed.  Harry advised that he “reviewed his records pertaining to the above captioned organization and the two captioned individuals were members of it.”  Harry recalled that Juan del Rosario and Dr. Genoo were good friends and they attended a J26M meeting in Chicago on 6/1/61.
LAX-33
1965-May 3
IP / M
FBI employee Gerald A. Boswell created a contact form to report that Harry dropped off a letter to the FBI-Los Angeles office.
Harry’s letter was captioned “Note to Federal Bureau of Investigation” which he dated April 1, 1965 but he did not mail it.  Instead he brought it into FBI-Los Angeles office on May 3, 1965.
In his April 1st letter, Harry again discusses his suspicions regarding “former associates in the organization JURE” because he believed that “they were not in fact anti-Castro but rather pro-Communist, in some things they said and the way they operated, etc.”  In his letter, Harry mentions Rolando Barrio and Eddy Martinez and Harry discusses his “guess” regarding the true intentions or objectives of Martinez.  Harry also mentions two Dominicans (J. Gil Rosario and Dr. Fco. Genoo) one of whom (Genoo) he remembered from Chicago when he was a member of FPCC and J26M.
LAX-32
1965-May 10
P
Harry phoned the Los Angeles office “collect” and spoke to Agent Philip S. Andrist at 10:05am.
Harry told Agent Andrist that he had previously communicated with the FBI in Los Angeles concerning JURE and he pointed out that while he lived in Chicago he affiliated himself with the J26M.  Harry stated that upon moving to Los Angeles, “he associated with JURE in late 1964” and that he had been “approached to purchase guns” and other weapons.  Harry stated that “he discontinued his association with these groups as he felt they were pro-Castro rather than anti-Castro.”
LAX-34
1966-November 22
P
Harry called the FBI-Los Angeles office and spoke with Agent Philip J. Reilly.
Harry “opened the conversation by stating that he has been a member of the FPCC in 1960-1961 and later turned against the communist leadership in this movement and became actively engaged in anti-Castro organizational activity.  He implied that he had been informant of the Chicago office of the FBI in supplying information regarding the activities of the FPCC.  Dean said he knew Larry Howard and Lorenzo Hall in the FPCC and indicated that Howard and Hall had traveled in Cuba with Lee Harvey Oswald…”
Dean was rambling and disconnected in his narration and when asked for purpose of his call, he stated that he wanted to ‘clear his name’ and clarify his status with regard to his name being mentioned in the U.S. Senate Committee on the FPCC.”
Dean was told that if he wished, an Agent familiar with these matters would contact him…”
“A subsequent review of subject file on Harry Dean reflects that he has been interviewed by this Bureau on several occasions and has been advised that his false claim of having served as an informant of the FBI must be stopped.”
LAX-55
1966-December 6
IP
Special Agents William J. McCauley and Henry J. Platt went to Harry’s home at 2013 S. 7th St, Alhambra CA in response to Harry’s 11/25/66 phone call with Agent Phillip J. Reilly.
Harry was “asked what it was that he wanted to explain to the FBI” and “he told SA’s Pratt and McCauley that his name appears in a report of the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee on the FPCC and that he wanted it made clear for the benefit of his children’s futures…that he is not a ‘red’ as the report would suggest but is in fact anti-communist. He added that he has already explained this to Senator Eastland through correspondence but that no publicity was given the fact he had been in contact with FBI…He said that in short he wanted to ‘get off the hook’.”
He was told that he was not ‘on the hook’ so far as the U.S. Government is concerned,  He added that in his effort to ‘clear his name’ he has been in contact with Knott (of Knott’s Berry Farm) foundation, but that it didn’t seem to have solved his problem.  It was explained to him that the consequences of his activities, whether or not the opposite of what he intended, were of no interest to the U.S. Government.  He said that he now understood that, and that he might have been better off if he himself had forgotten the past and done nothing tending to revive it. Dean failed to mention the Oswald matter, and it was not brought up by the SA’s interviewing him.”
LAX-57
I can now definitively address one of the assertions made in the past which claims that Harry Dean was in contact with Los Angeles FBI Special Agent in Charge, Wesley G. Grapp.
First, let’s summarize what Dean has previously claimed with respect to his alleged contacts with Wesley Grapp.  The following quotations appear in Paul Trejo’s e-Book about Harry.
According to Harry, his first contact with Wesley Grapp allegedly occurred in July 1961 with respect to the Fair Play For Cuba Committee.  His subsequent contacts with Grapp were allegedly with respect to the JBS plot against JFK but you will notice some dating discrepancies in Harry’s story.
After the quotations from Trejo's e-Book – I will present some factual information which is based upon documents in Wesley Grapp’s personnel file.
Page       Harry’s Comment
22………”Not long after we arrived in Los Angeles, Wesley Grapp of the local FBI contacted me out of the blue.”  [Note:  Harry moved from Chicago and arrived in Los Angeles in early July 1961.]
65……….”In the first days of October [1963], Los Angeles Special Agent in Charge Wesley Grapp drove out to my place in Rowland Heights [California] where I told him all about the Rousselot-Walker plan.  I outlined the roles of the Birchers, Robert Welch, and Guy Galbadon and everyone.
81………..”…before November [1963] ended, Wesley Grapp called me on the phone. ‘Harry’ he murmured, ‘I think we should review what you told me last month.’ ”   [Note:  "last month" would mean October 1963]
82………….”In January 1964, the FBI finally called me to recount what I’d seen in Southern California in 1963.  FBI Agent Wesley Grapp drove out to my place and invited me into his car.  He had reviewed his notes from last September and he recounted my story as well as he could.  He was basically correct one hundred percent and I added nothing significant.”
117………….In discussing the Warren Commission Report, Harry refers to one of their statements which he described as “a lucky guess” which he attributed to “they used my testimony to Wesley Grapp back in September of 1963.”
150………….”I’ve been telling people my recollections since the days I first told FBI Agent Wesley Grapp about it in the autumn of 1963.
In addition, Harry answered an inquiry from John Simkin which asked Harry when he first began giving information to the FBI about the JBS plot – and Harry answered “September 1963” – which in the context of his other answers presumably means he told Wesley Grapp starting in September 1963.  http://educationforu...ic=4269&&page=5
I will now address Harry’s statements – using the page number as the identifier:
22 = Notice that Harry describes Grapp as being a “local” FBI Agent (i.e. assigned to the Los Angeles FBI field office circa July 1961).
In reality, Wesley Grapp had just been assigned as Special Agent in Charge of the Miami field office on April 7, 1961.  Grapp previously was SAC of Oklahoma City from September 21, 1958 to April 1961.
Prior to taking over the Miami field office, Grapp met with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover in Washington DC.  Aside from the customary review by Hoover of weaknesses in the Miami field office which Hoover wanted Grapp to immediately address, there was an even more significant matter that dominated their attention.
Starting in January 1961, an FBI Agent assigned to the Oklahoma City field office (William W. Turner) made some extremely serious and career-ending derogatory allegations against SAC Grapp.
Among the charges which Turner made:
(1) Grapp was a very heavy drinker, (2) Grapp had demanded discounts for repairs to his personal automobile from a local Miami repair shop as well as demanding discounts from a local electronics company for sound equipment for his daughter, (3) during his service as SAC in Oklahoma City, Grapp had been stopped by an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer and given a ticket for speeding at 80mph which Grapp covered up, and (4) Grapp had exhibited an arrogant, overbearing attitude when dealing with the public as well as with various law enforcement agencies and (5) Grapp had engaged in a biased personal vendetta against former FBI Agent William Turner whose performance in OKC Grapp rated “unsatisfactory” –and that rating resulted in Turner’s suspension and eventual dismissal from the FBI.
During the first half of 1961 (and particularly during June-July 1961), Turner’s allegations were the subject of an exhaustive multiple-office investigation which required Grapp to prepare sworn affidavits and be interviewed to answer every charge.  Meanwhile, Grapp was busy settling into his new responsibilities as SAC in Miami, FL.
The FBI’s Inspection Division then spent countless hours interviewing numerous people (inside and outside the FBI) who had any kind of awareness of, or specific knowledge about, Turner’s charges.  The investigation also looked into Grapp’s attitude and personal behavior when dealing with non-employees.
Sections 3 and 4 of Grapp’s personnel file consists of 408 pages.  About 75% of those pages are devoted entirely to Turner’s charges, along with the interviews conducted and the affidavits prepared, and the resulting reports about each specific charge.
It strains credulity to think that somebody facing this massive assault upon his integrity, character, and professionalism (which could be career-ending) would somehow have interest in (or time) to call Harry Dean – particularly when there is absolutely NOTHING in Grapp’s file to indicate that he even knew Harry Dean existed.
Furthermore, on July 5, 1961, an official of the American Collectors Association wrote a letter to J. Edgar Hoover commending Grapp for the speech he gave in Miami “last week” at their annual Convention.
63 = In a section captioned “September 1963 with Gabby, Hall and Howard”, Dean claims that “One day, FBI Agent Wesley Grapp came by for a visit.”
65 = According to Harry Dean, Grapp “drove” to Harry’s home in “the first days of October” (1963).
This is entirely a fabrication by Harry.  First of all, Grapp was SAC of Miami field office in both September and October 1963.
In addition: from September 23rd through October 4th, 1963, Grapp was in Washington DC for a “Criminal Intelligence” training class.  During this time, he also completed his required annual firearms test.
Notice that Harry also changes the date of his alleged encounters with Grapp.  In all other instances, he says that he first began “meeting” with Grapp in September 1963 but on pages 65 and 81 of Paul Trejo’s e-Book, the date changes to the first days of October”.
As might be expected, there is absolutely nothing in Grapp’s file to indicate that he had any kind of contact with Harry Dean nor any contact with any informant matching Dean’s description nor is there any report of any kind which mentions the Birch Society or anybody connected to the Birch Society.
As retired Special Agent Wesley Swearingen has pointed out, FBI Special Agents in Charge DO NOT perform field work (i.e. they don’t conduct phone or in-person interviews, or investigations, or casework, nor do they contact or monitor informants etc). SAC’s are Administrators and public relations officials.  Significantly, Grapp’s file contains numerous letters from J. Edgar Hoover commending Grapp for the work done by his Agents in Miami field (including development and use of informants inside Miami’s territory).
AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 1963
In order to evaluate the credibility of Harry Dean’s recollections regarding his alleged “meetings” or “contacts” with Grapp, it would be useful to summarize Grapp’s history during the months of August-September 1963.
8/5/63 = Grapp completed and submitted his death beneficiary form which listed his wife as beneficiary.  Grapp input his address at this time as North Miami Beach, FL.
8/28/63 = Grapp went to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Key West FL for his annual medical exam.
9/6/63 – 9/11/63 = Grapp attended the American Legion National Convention in Miami
9/23/63 – October 4, 1963 = Grapp attended Criminal Intelligence training class in Washington DC
9/24/63 = Grapp attended a meeting with J. Edgar Hoover in Washington D.C. at which they discussed issues which a recent inspection of the Miami office indicated should receive prompt attention
Does this sound like someone whose responsibilities and schedule gave him time to travel from Miami to Los Angeles to “meet” and “drive” Harry Dean around Los Angeles County for hours?
82 = In January 1964, Dean again claims that Grapp “called him and "drove out to my place".  However, Grapp was still SAC in Miami.  Furthermore, Harry's Los Angeles file shows NO FBI contact with him in January 1964.
Also noteworthy is that personnel documents pertaining to Grapp during the period when Harry Dean claims they were in contact and meeting with each other show that Grapp was routinely collecting overtime IN MIAMI for his work there.
Grapp reported to work as SAC Los Angeles on March 2, 1964 at 8:14am.  On March 3, 1964, Grapp informed FBI HQ that he had found a new residence in southern California at 2919 W. 129th Place in Gardena.
6/10/15 UPDATE:
As noted above in the section which summarizes all of my FOIA requests pertaining to Harry, I used the files and serials identified on FBI search slips which appear in his HQ and Los Angeles files to make requests to the FBI for those individual serials and files.  Significantly, NONE of the material released supports Harry's story -- except in the limited sense that Harry gave Los Angeles FBI Agents some documents which Harry thought they would like to have regarding Harry's trip to Cuba and his involvement with FPCC while he lived in Chicago.
For example:  I received the FBI files on Juan del Rosario and on Joaquin Freire.  Significantly, the serials in those files do not mention Harry nor do they include any references to Harry's FBI-Chicago, FBI-HQ, or FBI-Los Angeles file numbers.  Nor is Harry mentioned or referenced on any of the search slips in those files.
BOTTOM-LINE:
(1) Harry's story is essentially fictional.  Yes---he did provide unsolicited information to the FBI in Chicago and in Los Angeles.  In every instance, however, Harry decided what HE thought the FBI might be interested in.  He was never asked by the FBI to provide information or to function in some manner on behalf of the FBI.
(2) FBI Agents who had contacts with Harry (by phone, in person, or by mail) memorialized their contacts on the standard FBI form used for their contacts with NON-informants.
(3)  In almost every case, Harry's "information" was just filed away by FBI clerks.  Harry was never assigned to any specific Agent -- which explains why his contacts were with so many different Agents.  In addition, FBI protocol for dealing with actual informants required Agents to contact their informant every two weeks to obtain information from them.  Significantly, no FBI Agent contacted Harry every two weeks or on any other schedule. Instead, Harry initiated contacts with the FBI.
(4)  What Harry has done is convert and grossly inflate and exaggerate his unsolicited contacts with the FBI in Chicago and Los Angeles into some sort of unique, special "informant" relationship when none actually existed.
(5)  Harry has spent 50 years making all sorts of false or misleading assertions about himself which he knew nobody would be likely to disprove or even challenge because:
(a) his FBI and CIA files were not readily available, i.e. since Harry is living, his files could not normally be released without his notarized authorization and
(b) most laymen have no understanding of standard FBI protocols for developing and handling actual FBI informants or FBI confidential sources.
This also explains why Harry never submitted FOIA requests for his own FBI or CIA files -- which he could have done 30 or more years ago. Obviously, he did not want anybody to have access to them.  His FBI-Chicago field file was destroyed in May 1990.  If he had requested that file before its destruction, it would have definitively proved his story to be fictional.
