Selectable

January 2022

Circuit includes a feature to make any object "non-selectable", meaning that objects can be ignored during a "left-click select" action on a Sheet.

This feature is particularly useful when a rectangle type object surrounds other items, but also may be used to lock any item, including images, into position.

For example, when a symbol is created to depict a splitter-box, and it's inside another enclosure, sub-items can be tricky to select, as the mouse will pick up the outer box first...

Per the example, when trying to select SB1, location A2 may tend to be selected instead.

Another issue you may find is that single items may be inadvertently moved by "negligent selection".

The Selectable option now comes into play. It has a couple of rules though...

  • Only single items may be set to "non-selectable" (multiple single items can be set at once though)

  • No items that are part of a Symbol or Group may be set as "non-selectable"

(Note! Once any item has been set as "non-selectable" it can of course be reset to "selectable" once again, discussed later.)

To set any item(s) as non-selectable, first select as required, then choose Layout > Selectable (ALT+S)...

Assuming the above rules were followed, the item is now set to "non-selectable".

The Selectable (ALT+S) feature is also called to restore items to "selectable" once again.

Ensure that nothing is selected on the Sheet, then hit ALT+S, a dialogue will now pop up to allow re-selection of all currently items marked as "non-selectable"...

From the list presented simply select the item you wish to restore then hit [Apply] and the item will be returned to a selectable state, and be selected on the Sheet to confirm.

Generally, use the object type, for example "rectangle" and it's X and Y insertion point to identify the object of interest.

(Note! To determine the X and Y of the object of interest simply hover your mouse around the object's top-left co-ordinate and observe the values in the lower left panel of Circuit.)...

In the case of Text objects, their actual text will also be included as a further identification aid...

As mentioned, you cannot set any item that is part of a SYMBOL/GROUP to non-selectable, also note that when you create a SYMBOL/GROUP from a selection of objects, they will immediately have any "non-selectable" attributes reset to "selectable", as every element in a SYMBOL/GROUP must be selectable!

That's all for the Selectable options for now.
