WJ19 Prep Events

Two WJ19 Prep Events are being organized in Edmonton, AB and Sylvan Lake, AB to help prepare all youth/adult participants and IST headed to WJ19 in West Virginia, USA.

(Because of the central Alberta location of these Events, the current target group are WJ19 registrants from Northern Lights, Chinook, Saskatchewan, and Cascadia Councils. However, they really are welcome to anyone anyone headed to WJ19 who is "in town" during that time.)

My name is Victor Lin from 59th Greenfield (Edmonton). About 4 years ago, myself an another PUL (Simon Evison from Glendale 101 (Calgary)), came up with the idea of pulling together two events for the WJ15 bound youth to help them prepare for their adventure to Japan.  The first event in April 2015 was a Japanese Cultural Awareness weekend (Sat to Sun morning).  The second was a final WJ Prep Camp help in May 2015.  These two events were so successful, I am hoping to do it again for the next generation of participants headed to WJ19.

Details, including registration forms and fees, are as follows

EVENT #1 - Global Cultural Awareness / April 13, 2019 (optional April 14 mixer event) / Edmonton, AB

For anyone who has ever traveled around the world, there are many things out there that come across as very different than what we are used to. That doesn’t make it wrong or bad, just different. As youth/adult participants and IST headed to World Scout Jamboree 2019 (WJ19) in West Virginia, USA, we should expect to run into many of these cultural differences from across the globe everywhere we turn.

For a taste of where Cultural Awareness comes into play, have a quick look at this YouTube Video ("18 Things You Shouldn't Do When You Travel" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxD_bcF9Mqg).

This session is meant to introduce the participants to what is Cultural Awareness, why it is important, and have a little bit of fun exploring some select cultures a little bit more deeply through activities (e.g. crafts, games, food).

EVENT #2 - WJ19 Prep Camp / May 24-26, 2019 / Camp Woods (Sylvan Lake, AB)

This is an open Camp to give all of the WJ19 participants (youth/adult/IST) a chance to gather together ahead of the EPIC ADVENTURE that is WJ19! The purpose of the camp is to give everyone a chance to meet and interact with each other (e.g. patrol-mates, unit-mates, contingent-mates), some for the very first time, as well as create an avenue for everyone to ask questions and share experiences (e.g. preparation activities, past WJs).

The camp itinerary will be kept deliberately loose and will be driven by the interests of the youth participants (e.g. wide games, crafts, discussions, hanging out). A Saturday evening campfire will be organized to jointly reflect on the journey to come.
  • Fri, May 24 - Arrival at the campsite beginning from 6pm.
  • Sat, May 25 - 9am Opening Ceremonies. Day-time activities TBA (meet-and-greets, group mixers, all youth led). 7pm - Campfire.
  • Sun, May 26 - 9am Morning activities? 11am Closing Ceremonies (including reflection). 12noon - Departures.
Participants are asked to come self-sufficient (e.g. tenting and food). Individuals and smaller groups are still welcome to attend. Please let me (Victor) know ahead of time in order to possibly link you up with a larger group.

Please note that a minimum of 40 people are required to hold the camp. Unfortunately, if this number cannot be reached, the camp may be cancelled (confirmation by mid-April 2019) with all fees refunded.
