Arbaugh outlast competition, conditions
heat and humidity were heavy, but were no match for 115 runners and the promise
of post-race Popsicles. There are no flat sections on this out-and-back 6K
starting and finishing at Francis Scott Key High School in Union Bridge. The
return trip, in particular, provides a lot of uphill work.
top men were off to a fast start. Eager to chase a course record, Arthur
Leathers grew a significant lead over Brendan DuLaney and Karsten Brown.
Unfortunately, he mistook the return-trip 2M mark as the turnaround instead of
continuing to the 3K mark. He had already returned past Brendan and Karsten
before they could figure out what had happened and call him back to complete
the course. He ended up running 5.56K in 19:28. Arthur does have two more
opportunities to win series events and clinch an overall series win. Brendan
kept his focus and strength for the win as Karsten could never reel him in.
Karsten held off Colin Russell, who completed the podium. Fourth and fifth were
grabbed by young Chris Scalzi and veteran Tom Yinger, respectively.
runner Tonna Arbaugh had a breakthrough race for the women. Not only did she
finish ahead of frequent masters winner Tina McCubbin, she finished ahead of
all the women for a win. Tonna went out hard, building a comfortable lead by
the turnaround. About halfway back on the return trip, the difficult course and
conditions had slowed her a little, but not enough for second-place Kaylee Ryan
to catch up. Maggie Leathers was not much further back to complete the women's podium.
Emily Russell and Valerie White added good scores in the overall standings as
fourth and fifth, respectively.

under), Steve Kerzel and Maria Carr (50-59), Malcolm Senior and Nancy Wills
(60-69), Jim Bullock and Jeanette Novak (70-79), and Yvonne Aasen (80 &

her parents in Taneytown.
