Parsons, Stick burn up the course at the Run with the Knights 5K

The 2015 edition annually held at Century High School had the dreaded three H's, heat, humidity and hills. A total of 91 runners finished the race in two heats, the second being primarily for volunteers from the first heat.

After the turnaround on this out-and-back course, the group of Karsten Brown, Jesse Henderson and Jesse Parsons were just ahead of Ben Arbaugh. Other speedsters like Steve Kartalia and Colin Russell were lurking a short ways back. The Jesses took advantage of their young legs on the uphills to put a little distance on Karsten, who would close on them on the downhills. Jesse P. made his move in the final few tenths of a mile and pulled away for his second strong Twilight Series win in a row with a 17:24. Jesse H. outkicked Karsten by a second in 17:43 to assure the same finish order as the Owl 2M. Steve cruised in for fourth ahead of Ben and Colin. Some of the other notable performances were Chris Scalzi at age 15 in 19:15, James Moreland in 23:39 to win the 60-69 age group, and Jim Bullock in 25:33 to win the 70-79 age group. Garrett Cox, age 12, was the youngest male finisher.

Sherry Stick is accustomed to winning, but her usual closest competitors were absent this evening. Still, that did not deter her from a hard effort on a hot night with a blazing 18:55. Emma Kartalia was most impressive in her second place 23:27 at only 15 years old. Great things are in store for her during the remainder of high school and beyond. Valerie White rounded out the podium in 23:42. The next finishing time of 24:10 was shared by our top two masters runners, Tonna Arbaugh and Karen Rinehart. The tiebreaker has to go to Tonna, who ran heat one, over Karen, who ran heat two. Besides knowing that heat one times from the paper tape were rounded up (Tonna had 24:09.01), while heat two were done more informally from a stopwatch, conditions were cooler for heat two. Other notable performances included the youngest runner, Emma Kartalia, in 25:25 at age 11, Jean Smink winning 50-59 in 29:34, Chris Reese winning 60-69 in 31:25, and 83 year-old Yvonne Aasen winning 70-infinity in 49:52.

Karen Rinehart was the first finisher in heat two, pulling away from what I imagine is a thoroughly disgraced Patrick Stohrer.
